While the winner plays Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2 on Friday, the loser stands eliminated.

Mumbai Indians secured their IPL playoffs berth in dramatic fashion. While Cameron Green’s maiden IPL century had helped MI beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their last league match on Sunday, Rohit Sharma and Co had to wait till the outcome of Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Titans to confirm their place in the playoffs.

For LSG, meanwhile, it has been a roller-coaster of sorts in IPL 2023 so far. They started with three wins out of their first four matches, but midway through the league stage, on 1 May, they lost skipper KL Rahul to a thigh injury while he was fielding in their game against RCB. LSG eventually went onto lose the game against RCB by 18 runs and their next match against CSK was washed out due to rain.

While a 56-run defeat to GT in the match that followed put LSG in a precarious position, they fought back hard in their next three matches, clinching wins over SRH, MI and KKR, the last of those which came by just one run.

For Lucknow, West Indians Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran have been their best batters this season so far, as has been Marcus Stoinis. The trio have shared nine fifties between them and all have more than 350 runs in their belt.

MI began with defeats to RCB and CSK in their first two games, but Suryakumar Yadav finding his form back and the rise of stars like Nehal Wadhera and Cameron Green have contributed to the five-time champions reaching the playoffs.

LSG will look to go one better, after they had suffered defeat at the hands of RCB in the Eliminator last season. However, a resurgent MI stand in their way.

Rohit Sharma reveals how exclusion from India’s 2011 World Cup squad almost led to ‘disaster’

India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma opened up on his exclusion from the Men in Blue’s squad for the 2011 World Cup at home and how he didn’t watch a majority of the tournament out of disappointment.

Rohit, who was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning Indian team, also opened up on the “disaster” period that unfolded in his life after he was left out of Team India’s squad for its first home ODI World Cup in 15 years.

“Honestly I didn’t watch the World Cup itself except the semis and the finals because I was so disappointed that I didn’t want to watch, everytime I put the TV on I felt that I could have been there, what went wrong and stuff like that.

“I had to make changes then or I knew wouldn’t have played cricket anymore, I knew that my life is on the edge, if I don’t perform or if I don’t do certain things manner, this can lead up to a disaster. Then I’d have nowhere to go, it was that kind of a situation for me,” Rohit said in a chat with JioCinema.

The ‘Hitman’, as he is popularly known, wouldn’t be a regular in the Indian team until he was promoted to the top of the order alongside Shikhar Dhawan by then-skipper MS Dhoni in the 2013 Champions Trophy, which would prove to be a pivotal moment in his career as he would grab the opportunity with both hands and would remain a first-choice opener in the white-ball formats since then.

He would also lead Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles since taking over the leadership of the side in 2013. More recently, he took over leadership of the Indian team across formats from Virat Kohli in the aftermath of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

It’s not over for the Titans though, as they will have one more shot at making the final.

We shift our attention to the Eliminator between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians, which takes place at the same venue tomorrow with the winner of that contest squaring off against GT in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Friday.

GT and CSK, the two teams that squared off in the tournament opener at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on 31 March, finished in the top two slots with 20 and 17 points respectively with the Titans topping the table for a second season in a row since making their debut last year along with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

CSK were tied with LSG on 17 points, given the fixture between the two at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium earlier this month had been rained off, but finished ahead on the table due to their superior Net Run Rate.

As far as the head-to-head record between the two teams goes, it’s 3-0 in favour of Gujarat at the moment. The Hardik Pandya-led side have pulled off a hat-trick of chases against MS Dhoni and Co — winning by three wickets and seven wickets last season. In the first game of the 16th edition, Gujarat managed to chase down the 179-run target set by Chennai with five wickets and four deliveries to spare.

While the winner of this contest progresses directly into the final that takes place at the Narendra Modi Stadium this Sunday, the loser will have another shot at making the final as they take on the winner of the Eliminator between LSG and Mumbai Indians, which takes place on Wednesday, 24 May.

Neeraj Chopra makes history as he attains World No 1 spot in men's javelin throw rankings

Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra on Monday reached new heights in his career, claiming the number one spot in the updated men’s javelin throw rankings.

Neeraj now has 1455 points to his name, taking the No 1 spot from defending world champion Andersen Peters, who now has 1433 points.

Jakub Vadlejch, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, occupies third place with 1416 points.

On 30 August last year, Neeraj had attained second place in the rankings, and had been behind Andersen Peters ever since.

And in September 2022, the 25-year-old had won the Diamond League 2022 finals in Zurich, thereby becoming the first Indian to do so.

Chopra has started the new season on a strong note, winning the Doha Diamond League earlier in May with a throw of 88.67m.

Chopra will next be in action at the FBK Games in the Netherlands from 4 June. That will be followed by the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland’s Turku from 13 June.

Shubman Gill (680 runs) has been GT’s biggest positive this season, and CSK’s primary aim will not only be to break the opening GT partnership, but to get rid of Shubman as early as possible. Gill picked up from where he left off last season, notching up two centuries and four fifties this season.

As far as bowling is concerned, both Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan continue to lead the Purple Cap standings with 24 wickets apiece. While the duo have been part of the GT setup since their debut season last year, the presence of another Afghan, Noor Ahmad, has been a welcome sign for Hardik Pandya and Co.

For CSK, on the other hand, Deepak Chahar’s recent form is something to be pleased about. In the last four matches, the pacer has scalped 10 wickets and along with that, he has been effective in the powerplay phase.

CSK also have a potential finisher in Shivam Dube. The 29-year-old has amassed 385 runs from 13 matches  at a strike-rate of 160, and this includes worthwhile cameos along with three fifties. As far as runs are concerned, this has been Dube’s most productive IPL season yet.

IPL 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders season review: Rinku’s coming of age a big takeaway for KKR in a sub-par campaign

Kolkata Knight Riders’ run to the final of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) appears a distant memory now, with the ‘Purple Army’ having now gone two seasons in a row without reaching the playoffs.

Kolkata had an outside chance of sneaking into the top four when they hosted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the final game of the season at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Not only would they need a big victory over Lucknow to not only go level with Rajasthan Royals but to eclipse their Net Run Rate, they would also need Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to lose their final games in the Sunday double-header.

The possibility went out of the window after Lucknow Super Giants recovered from a shaky start, riding on a game-changing 58 off 30 to post a challenging 176/8 on the board, meaning Kolkata would have had to chase the 177-run target down inside nine overs to still compete for the playoffs.

Kolkata, at the very least, could’ve signed off with a victory to end their campaign on a positive note. And they did start off on a positive note with the opening pair of Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer plundering 59 runs in the first five overs of the chase.

As had been the case with the Knight Riders for a majority of the season, and was indeed one of the major reasons why they will be watching the playoffs from the sidelines instead of being in the thick of things, their batting order failed to capitalise on the promising start and lost their way in the middle overs.

A late cameo from Rinku Singh almost caused an upset, with the KKR pocket rocket remaining unbeaten on 67 off 33 deliveries that helped reduce the margin of defeat to just one run.

So where exactly did things go wrong for the Knight Riders this season. We take a look at the reasons in detail below:

A misfiring batting lineup

The biggest issue with the Kolkata batting order was the fact that they did not have a settled top order throughout the season. From going with Mandeep Singh and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in their tournament opener against Punjab Kings in Mohali to sending Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer in their final game of the season against Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens on Saturday, KKR used eight different opening combinations, with Gurbaz and Roy getting the most games in this role.

What also hurt their cause was some of their star performers such as Andre Russell failing to live up to their expectations. Dre Russ endured one of his leanest runs ever as he could manage just 227 runs at an average of 20.64 and a strike rate of 145.51.

Lack of potent pace options

What also hurt Kolkata’s chances this season was the fact that none of their frontline pacers could cause much damage to opposition teams. Lockie Ferguson, whom they re-acquired ahead of the season after the express pacer represented Gujarat Titans last year, collected just one wicket in his three appearances this season with an economy of 12.52. Fellow Kiwi seamer Tim Southee and veteran Indian quick Umesh Yadav too had insipid runs, the latter collecting just one wicket in eight appearances at an economy of 9.95.

In the end, all-rounder Shardul Thakur turned out to be KKR’s most successful seamer with seven wickets in 11 appearances across the season. Skipper Nitish Rana turned to Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora as his frontline pace options in the second half of the season. Though it’s still early days in the league for the two youngsters, they did show promise with the ball and are likely to get an extended run next season.

Rinku and other positives

The single biggest positive for the Kolkata Knight Riders this season was Rinku Singh, in whom they have unearthed a gem who could be a superstar of the game down the road. The Uttar Pradesh batter has had KKR’s backing for quite some time now, having been part of the setup since 2018. While he had made sporadic appearances in his first three seasons and got seven matches under his belt last year, it was the 16th edition of the league in which Rinku got his breakthrough, playing all 14 matches in the season and collecting 474 runs at a stellar average and strike rate of 59.25 and 149.53 respectively.

What especially stood out in Rinku’s approach at the centre was his never-say-die attitude and his ability to go hammer and tong from the word go. It was that fearless approach that helped him pull a rabbit out of the hat against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, and nearly produce something similar against Lucknow on Saturday. And such has been his impact that there are talks of fast-tracking him into the Indian team already.

Another positive for the Knight Riders this season was the emergence of leg-spinner Suyash Sharma, who formed a potent spin trio with Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine that turned out to be Kolkata’s trump card in the bowling department this season. Chakravarthy finished the leading wicket-taker for the Knight Riders and is currently the only member of the KKR attack among the top five bowlers, collecting 20 wickets across the season at an average and economy of 21.45 and 8.14 respectively.

Last, but certainly not the least, Rana did more than a commendable job filling in for skipper Shreyas Iyer, who had been ruled out of the entire season due to a back injury. While Iyer will be back as captain next season, the Knight Riders have discovered a decent back-up option in Rana, who could perhaps take up the responsibility on a full time basis down the road, whether at KKR or in some other franchise.

RCB vs GT match summary: Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 104 outshone Virat Kohli’s 101 as Gujarat Titans beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to end RCB’s hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2023 playoffs.

RCB’s loss meant that Mumbai Indians, who had beaten Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier on Sunday, qualified as the fourth team in the playoffs. The confirmed four teams in the playoffs are GT, CSK, LSG and MI.

Having been asked to bat, Virat Kohli (101*) and Faf du Plessis (28) forged a 67-run stand for the first wicket before the RCB skipper departed. Glenn Maxwell (11) too failed to capitalise on his start. It was a 64-run stand between Kohli and Anuj Rawat that propelled RCB to 197/5.

In reply, it was Shubman Gill who stole the momentum from RCB. RCB got the early breakthrough when Mohammed Siraj got rid of Wriddhiman Saha in the third over, but Gill and Vijay Shankar (53) forged 123 runs for the second wicket to help set the platform for the win. Dasun Shanaka (0) and David Miller (6) hardly made an impact, and it was Gill and Rahul Tewatia who sealed the win for GT with five balls to spare.

Preview: Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Gujarat Titans in the final league match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 with an eye on qualifying for the playoffs.

However, rain is forecast for the game on Sunday in Bengaluru, and RCB would hope MI lose to SRH to stand a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

RCB have seen a couple of positive results recently, winning against and SRH to take their points tally to 14.

The onus will rely on top three of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell to fire the big runs for RCB and get a good score on board.
