Wrestlers' protest: IOA Athletes Commission backtracks on statement supporting grapplers, claims report

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Athletes Commission on Sunday decided against releasing a statement expressing solidarity for the wrestlers protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in New Delhi.

The development comes days after IOA president PT Usha slammed the ongoing protests by leading wrestlers at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, saying it was “not good for sport”.

Wrestlers’ protest against WFI: A timeline of the developments so far

According to a report on the Indian Express, the Athletes Commission — headed by boxing legend MC Mary Kom — had drafted a statement following a meeting on Saturday which was to be neutral in tone by calling for more measures to be put in place to ensure athletes’ safety.

The report, however, stated that Olympic medal-winning shooter Gagan Narang voted against the idea, saying it was “too late” to release a statement more than a week into the second round of protests by the wrestlers.

Leading Indian wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are leading a second round of protests at Jantar Mantar in the national capital demanding the arrest of under-fire WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexually harassing several wrestlers besides inflicting mental harassment as well as financial misappropriation.

Brij Bhushan, who also happens to be a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, has denied the charges levelled against him and maintained innocence in the matter while accusing involvement of rival political parties in the ongoing protests that have taken the nation by storm.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, have filed two FIRs against Brij Bhushan, one of which involves the POCSO Act pertaining to the allegation of sexually assaulting a minor. This was more than a week after the wrestlers filed a complaint at the Connaught Place police station, and only after the matter was taken to the Supreme Court.

The wrestlers had initially staged protests at the same site in January, but called it off just three days later after a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who announced the formation of an six-member oversight committee that was tasked with investigating the claims against Brij Bhushan.

The panel was given four weeks to arrive at a conclusion. With more than three months passing without any concrete action being taken against the WFI chief led to the wrestlers returning to Delhi for a fresh sit-in protest.

IPL 2023: Sikandar Raza, an unlikely hero, steps up as PBKS prevail over CSK in last-ball finish at Chepauk

It was heartbreak for thousands of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans at Chepauk as they succumbed to a four-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Devon Conway probably had the game in CSK’s hands after his unbeaten 92 led them to 200/4 from 20 overs, but it was a valiant effort from the Punjab Kings batters that eventually headlined their victory with Prabhsimran Singh (42) top-scoring for them.

Everyone had a role to play with the bat for PBKS, and eventually they showed that can go one step further by taking the game deep, and nailing the run-chase.

Where CSK lost the game

The 16th over. A mammoth 24 runs came off Tushar Deshpande’s over, and in a big-total chase like that, conceding 24 runs could prove fatal. And, well, it sure did!

It proved costly for CSK. Dhoni decided to switch to spin the next over by turning to Ravindra Jadeja for the 17th over, but even that plan backfired. Jitesh Sharma, who has been backed by Kevin Pietersen that he could replace Rishabh Pant in the Indian team, hit Jadeja towards long-on for a six, before Sam Curran, former CSK player, slammed a maximum in the fifth ball of the over.

By the end of the 17th over, PBKS were 170/4 and needed 31 off the final 18 balls. It was still possible, but in a big blow to their hopes, Matheesha Pathirana cleaned up Curran for 29 off 20.

Only nine runs had come off Pathirana, but Punjab Kings took advantage of Tushar Deshpande in the next over. Deshpande has struggled with his line and length at times this season, and conceding extras has been a major concern for the pacer.

On Sunday, he conceded two wides, with both of them coming in the 19th over of the Punjab Kings’ chase. Before Deshpande came on to bowl, PBKS needed 22 runs off 12 balls to win. A big, decent over was needed from CSK, but Deshpande lacked discipline in his bowling, conceding a couple of o boundaries despite getting the wicket of Jitesh Sharma.

Sikandar Raza was the new batter in at number eight. PBKS needed nine off six balls. Matheesha Pathirana, who had conceded 48 runs from four overs against RR, was given the duty to defend the total.

Raza and Shahrukh Khan decided to play it safe. Not go for the big runs, but instead rotate strike. Raza even collected a couple of runs off the penultimate ball, timing it towards deep midwicket for the brace.

From 48 in the last four overs, it was down to three runs from one ball. A brace from Raza would have led to the first Super Over of IPL 2023.

But, no, Raza wanted to finish it off. The sweeper cover fielder and the long-off fielder was inside the circle. While the field was being set, Raza was seen talking to the umpires, possibly asking him to be retired off in place of someone who can run quicker. But, Raza stayed. And delivered.

It’s the final ball. A slower ball from Pathirana to Raza, who moves across to pull over the square leg fielder inside the circle. He had slotted it in the middle of deep fine and deep midwicket. Theekshana had chased the ball down and pulled it back, but by the time he could throw the ball to Dhoni, three runs were already taken, and the batters were safe at their spots. PBKS had won!

CSK may never had seen this coming, but Dhoni had to admit that two overs cost the game. “We need to be prepared as to what is to be done. The last few overs when we were batting, we could have gotten 10-15 more. Our bowling needed some cushion. The slower one did grip. Our batters have been putting runs consistently. I think 200 was par but we bowled two bad overs. We know the conditions well. We didn’t bowl well,” said Dhoni.

CSK may not have been pleased with their death bowling, and that is where they would look to improve next, when they face Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow.

CSK will know that from here on, every game is important and cannot avoid further slip ups. Their loss on Sunday is their second in three games, and with just five games left, it’s about collecting every win possible for CSK.

For PBKS, they would hope other teams like RCB or MI don’t pick up momentum in their forthcoming games, and Punjab Kings themselves have to continue their winning streak.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, head back to Mohali to host Mumbai Indians on 3 May.

IPL 2023: PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan says it's 'very special' to beat CSK at Chepauk

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan termed his side’s four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk as ‘very, very special’, adding that beating CSK in their own den was a big thing to do.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

It was only a couple of days back when PBKS suffered a 56-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Mohali, but Dhawan hailed Punjab Kings’ team character.

“It feels very very special. Beating Chennai in Chennai is a very big thing. Very very pleased and that shows the great character of our side, leaving that loss behind and coming up with a fresh mindset. I was very happy with the way our bowlers bowled, we got them at the right score. They have been very consistent,” said Dhawan after the match.

Liam Livingstone scored 40 off 24 balls after PBKS were asked to chase down a target of 201, while Prabhsimran Singh (42) was also among the runs. The duo played the anchor role in the successful run chase, while Sikandar Raza scored 13 off seven balls.

“As a captain we wanted them to play more overs, Liam has got his touch back and would want him to bat more overs. Good signs that all are playing well,” Dhawan added.

MS Dhoni, the CSK skipper, felt that while they were 10-15 runs short, it was two bad overs that cost them the game.

Devon Conway was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 92, but that eventually went in vain.

While Conway credited CSK batting coach Mike Hussey, he also added that he relished batting with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane.

“I try to work as close as I can with Mike Hussey who is very experienced not only for Australia but also for CSK, he has played a lot of cricket here, along with the other players. I enjoy batting with Ruturaj and Ajinkya has got a lot of experience. When you build partnerships, it helps,” said Conway.

Pakistan vs New Zealand, Highlights, 2nd ODI in Rawalpindi, Full Cricket Score: Fakhar's ton guides hosts to victory

Pakistan vs New Zealand 2nd ODI toss report: Pakistan won the toss and opted to field for a second game in a row in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand.

While Pakistan skipper Babar Azam announced three changes in the Pakistan lineup for the second ODI in Rawalpindi, with Abdullah Shafique, Usama Mir and the uncapped Ihsanullah getting included, the Black Caps brought in James Neesham and Henry Shipley for Adam Milne and Blair Tickner.

After having levelled the T20I series in the white-ball tour of Pakistan with a six-wicket win in the series finale, New Zealand will aim to bounce back after suffering a five-wicket defeat in the opening one-dayer at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Daryl Mitchell’s ton (113) ended up going in vain in the first ODI, with Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman (117) hitting a century of his own and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan’s unbeaten 42 helping Pakistan chase down the 289-run target with five wickets and nine deliveries to spare.

While Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium hosted the first three T20Is, Rawalpindi had been allotted the two remaining T20Is along with the first two ODIs.

Karachi’s National Stadium is scheduled to host the remaining three ODIs.

Teams:

New Zealand: Chad Bowes, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w/c), Mark Chapman, Henry Nicholls, James Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry

Pakistan: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam(c), Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan(w), Agha Salman, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Ihsanullah

IPL 2023: All-round aggressive Gujarat Titans remain the team to beat

Gujarat Titans once again took over the top spot in the IPL points table with a convincing 7-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. GT, led by Hardik Pandya, did everything right on the day: from the toss to the chase.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

At the toss, Pandya went by the conditions and not the pitch. With dark clouds overhead and rain in the air, GT decided to field instead of the preferred option to bat. He was almost immediately proven right with light rain that pushed the game off by 45 minutes.

When play resumed, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, coming in as a replacement for the injured Jason Roy, made the difference early on even after losing his opening partner N Jagadeeshan cheaply. Shardul Thakur was promoted up the order but the gamble didn’t work out as her perished after just four balls without scoring.

Gurbaz went after Pandya, Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan and steered KKR to 61/2 in the first six overs. By the end, the Afghan batter remained the only positive for KKR from the day with a 81 run knock from 39 balls.

After the powerplay, Player of the Match Josh Little applied the brakes even as Rashid proved expensive. Little extracted extra bounce to frustrate the batters. His first two overs went for just 10 runs. At the start of the third, Venkatesh Iyer tried to attack but was adjudged leg before. In the same over, Nitish Rana exited as well.

Andre Russell provided a late burst with 34 runs but he acknowledged later that they were 20 runs short. And that proved to be the case.

In the chase, Shubman Gill started positively and continued despite Wriddhiman Saha being dismissed for just 10 runs. Gill’s onslaught continued unabated and he had hit seven fours by the time the powerplay got done.

Mid-way is when KKR created an opportunity for themselves to take this game deep. Wickets of Pandya and Gill came in consecutive overs and the set batters were back in the dugout bringing Vijay Shankar and David Miller to the middle.

Even after 18 runs from Suyash Sharma’s 15th over, GT were five runs short of what KKR had managed earlier at the same stage. But the difference came in what happened next.

The Suyash over provided a glimpse into the momentum that Miller and Shankar were collecting. In the 16th, Miller skied one off Miller and Suyash failed to latch on. The KKR all-rounder raged and you could understand why. Three balls later, Shankar smacked a slower one from him for a maximum. 13 came from that over and the match had suddenly swung GT’s way.

A six, six, four and six followed in the 17th over, bowled by Varun Chakaravarthy, as Shankar brought his name into the conversation for India’s No 4 slot at the ODI World Cup later this year.

With nothing going their way, KKR skipper Nitish Rana took matters into his own hands but it changed nothing. Four and a six set the tone and the match was settled with a wide in an anti-climatic fashion.

Miller scored 32 from 18 and Shankar piled on 51 from 24 balls as they put together 87 runs in 39 balls.

The two points further illustrate the massive task this team had undertaken before the season started and continue to put in the hard yards.

“Down the line in the group, we know that we’ll have to play good cricket to win the game, that’s the humbleness which has kept us in good stead. Everyone wants to contribute, but they accept difficult positions and want to come out on top. It’s all about playing good cricket consistently, irrespective of a win or a loss,” said Pandya after the win.

Gujarat Titans have now won three in a row and more importantly, gone unbeaten on the road with four straight wins.

IPL 2023: ‘Happy to do whatever my team needs' says Stoinis after playing key role in LSG's big win over PBKS

Marcus Stoinis insisted he was happy to bat wherever or bowl whenever the team needed him after playing a central role in Lucknow Super Giants’ crushing 56-run victory over Punjab Kings in Mohali on Friday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Australia all-rounder Stoinis top-scored for Lucknow with a 40-ball 72, helping the side post a mammoth 257/5 on the board, before dismissing opposition captain Shikhar Dhawan in the very first over of the Punjab chase, with the home team getting bundled out for 201 in reply.

“I do enjoy the responsibility of batting a bit lower and seeing the game home. Part of my journey is batting at every position. Bowl the first over, bowl the last over. I’m happy to do whatever my team needs,” Stoinis, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, said during the post-match presentation ceremony at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Stoinis had hurt his finger during the 38th match of the season, raising concerns for LSG over his participation in the second half of the 16th edition of the league.

The all-rounder, however, insisted there wasn’t much to worry about at the moment. “The finger is alright. It is better now. We will get scans done,” said Stoinis after the game.

LSG skipper KL Rahul, meanwhile, said the six-day break after their narrow loss against defending champions Gujarat Titans helped them bounce back in style.

“The last game was a bit of a downer and did hurt a lot of us as a team but we had three or four days break after that which was good. Everyone got their minds off cricket and just rested,” said Rahul, who had led the Punjab Kings franchise before signing with LSG.

“Getting 250 or 260 speaks very highly of our batting. Those first two or three overs, Kyle put pressure on their bowling and that set the tone for us and we took it from there,” added Rahul.

Punjab captain Dhawan, who returned to action after missing three consecutive matches due to a shoulder injury, rued conceding too many runs to the Lucknow batters.

“We gave too many runs away and we paid the price for it. I feel that the strategy to play with one extra fast bowler backfired whereas KL used an extra spinner. I tried to change something and it didn’t work but that’s all right. It’s a good learning for me and we’ll come back better stronger,” said Dhawan.

IPL 2023: LSG tear PBKS bowlers apart to post highest total of season, nearly break RCB's all-time record

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batters put up a dominant show against Punjab Kings on Friday, posting the highest total of IPL 2023 and the second-highest overall in the history of the tournament.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Powered by blazing fifties from Marcus Stoinis (72 off 40) and opener Kyle Mayers (54 off 24) as well as valuable contributions from Nicholas Pooran (45 off 19) and Ayush Badoni (43 off 24), LSG posted 257/5 at the end of their innings after being invited to bat by PBKS at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

It was the highest total of the 16th season of the league, going past Chennai Super Kings’ 235/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. More importantly, it was also only the second time that a team had crossed the 250-mark in the history of the IPL.

The record for the highest total in the history of the tournament continues to be held by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who smashed 263/5 against the Pune Warriors in 2013 powered by Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 not out — the highest individual score not just in the IPL but in the T20 format.

Had it not been for a slow start by skipper KL Rahul (12 off 9) as well as an excellent final over from Arshdeep Singh (1/54), Lucknow could very well have had a real shot at eclipsing RCB’s total.

Here are some of the reactions to LSG’s run-fest in Mohali:

IPL 2023: Yashasvi Jaiswal rises up to the occasion as RR complete double over CSK

Just like how Kolkata Knight Riders completed the double over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals did the same against Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur on Thursday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Before the match, CSK were on top of the IPL standings with 10 points. But, that changed following the Royals’ victory over Chennai, with Sanju Samson and Co taking the top spot, albeit momentarily.

On Thursday against CSK, young Yashasvi Jaiswal stepped up. He stepped up at the right time, giving his team the startthey needed after batting first.

Jaiswal and Buttler are synonymous for fifty-run partnerships, and it was a similar story on Thursday. Jaiswal was hitting the shots right from the word go. He began RR’s innings with a boundary, facing Akash Singh, and punishing him with a smash through covers for four.

Jaiswal then collected another boundary the very next ball, dispatching between extra cover and mid-off for another boundary. Jaiswal’s boundary off the fourth ball was different as he decided to flick towards short midwicket and finding the fence.

There were early signs of aggression from Jaiswal. The runs never really dried up for the 21-year-old, as he continued collecting fours and sixes on a regular basis. He got to his fifty inside just 26 balls, with as many as six fours and three sixes. That’s how aggressive Jaiswal was, playing a fearless brand of cricket to decimate the bowlers.

For Jaiswal, though, it was not the pressure of having to have a good start and do well. It was about maintaining a high strike-rate, because Jaiswal himself was aware of the situation. He knew his team had to get to at least 200, else they would be in for a tough time.

“It is not about just this season, I have been putting in the effort with the team management and I keep speaking to senior players like Dhoni sir and Virat bhai. I enjoy pressure and want to be there when there is pressure. I was only thinking of keeping my strike rate high and I knew we need 200 to defend on this surface,” said Jaiswal at the presentation ceremony.

Jaiswal was right. Given the depth of CSK’s batting line-up, on a perfect batting surface, RR did the right thing: Win the toss and not only bat, but to get to a safe total that was defendable.

For CSK, however, their chase did not go as they would have wanted to. Devon Conway (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (15) were dismissed even before they could have a say in the game, but it was once again Shivam Dube (52) who rose up to the occasion.

He came into bat in the 10th over with a task in hand. CSK were 69/2 then, and needed one big partnership to revive their hopes.

But, that just could not happen. Rahane and Ambati Rayudu departed in quick succession, and Moeen Ali, despite some aggression, departed for 23 off 12, Dube needed more than a 51-run stand with Moeen to make the chase happen, but just like how he lost two partners at the other end, Moeen too was dismissed.

The target was already looking improbable by the time Moeen was dismissed. CSK were 124/5 in the 15th over, and whatever they tried to do, it backfired.

Dube even hit Holder for a six and two fours in the 17th over, but soon after that, the runs dried up, and the required rate was almost 20 off the last three overs.

Eventually, CSK ended up well short of the target (32 runs). Had CSK got a vital, productive partnership at the top of the batting order, things would have been different, and there would have been a somewhat tense chase.

Afterall, it was Jaiswal’s aggressive batting that was the difference in the game, and in fact, Dhoni even admitted to giving away ‘too many runs’ in the powerplay.

“It (target) was quite a bit above par. The reason was the first six overs, gave too many runs, but at the same time the pitch was best to bat on at that time,” said Dhoni after the match.

Both RR and CSK are next in action on Sunday. While RR travel to Wankhede Stadium to face Mumbai Indians, CSK host Punjab Kings in the afternoon match the same day.

IPL 2023: 'Target was a bit above par', says CSK skipper MS Dhoni after defeat to RR

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni on Thursday felt that the target of 203 that was set by Rajasthan Royals (RR) was a ‘bit above par’, and that the Yellow Brigade gave ‘too many runs’ in the powerplay.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Having opted to bat first, RR made full use of the first six overs, amassing 64 runs without losing a wicket. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the standout performer with the bat for RR, scoring 77 off just 43 deliveries.

CSK bowlers found it tough to maintain the flow of boundaries.

“It (target) was quite a bit above par. The reason was the first six overs, gave too many runs, but at the same time the pitch was best to bat on at that time. Even when they were finishing the edges kept going for boundaries. They got par+ score and we were not able to stop the runs,” Dhoni said after the match.

Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathira went for 48 runs from four overs without taking a wicket, but Dhoni felt that Pathirana’s bowling was ‘very good’.

“I felt his (Pathirana) bowling was very good, not that he bowled badly. The scorecard doesn’t reflect how well he bowled,” added the CSK skipper.

RR ended a two-match winless run with a clinical victory, and skipper Sanju Samson said this was a much-needed win.

“Winning this game was needed for the team atmosphere and for the fans, also our first win in Jaipur,” said the cricketer from Kerala.

“Even when we batted, all the youngsters came in and did the job. The mindset of attacking is a nice change. Credit has to go to the management and the support staff for what players are doing, you see Jaiswal at the RR academy during the off-season playing a lot of balls,” added the 28-year-old.

Jaiswal, the Player of the Match, explained how talking to Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni regularly helped him.

“It is not about just this season, I have been putting in the effort with the team management and I keep speaking to senior players like Dhoni sir and Virat bhai. I enjoy pressure and want to be there when there is pressure. I was only thinking of keeping my strike rate high and I knew we need 200 to defend on this surface,” said the 21-year-old.

IPL 2023: RCB's batting issues deepen as KKR complete double over Virat Kohli and Co

“We handed them the game. We did deserve to lose. We handed them a victory. We were certainly not up to standard,” said Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stand-in skipper Virat Kohli after their 21-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli surely knows a thing or two about dealing in pressure match situations, but on Wednesday, the situation was different.

RCB had leaked 69 runs in the last five overs to allow KKR post 200/5 after asking them to bat first.

Once again, RCB’s death bowling plans did not go well, and once again, RCB batters succumbed to a run-chase pressure. That is not something new. We’ve seen it before, RCB have done that before.

What did RCB lack against KKR?

When tough situations like chasing down a 200-plus total in a T20 comes up, it’s important to be mentally prepared for it. Something like, come what may. So what did RCB lack against KKR?

Steady partnerships. It’s not only catches that win you game, but it’s also those big, stable partnerships that also count as match-winners.

RCB started off their chase in some confident fashion, with Kohli and Du Plessis helping their team surge towards 30 in the first two overs.

However, Du Plessis departed in the first ball of the third over, and all of a sudden, it was as though, the entire rhythm of RCB’s chase was affected. Barring a 55-run stand between Kohli and Mahipal Lomror for the fourth wicket, there was nothing much substantial for Bengaluru, and more importantly, there was nobody who could not only play the aggressor role, but also hang in there till the end.

On the contrary, KKR had two 80-plus partnerships. The first one, being the one between openers Jagadeesan and Jason Roy, and the second one between Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer for the third wicket.

Harshal Patel has been a death overs specialist for RCB for a while now, but on Wednesday, he endured wicketless figures of 0/44, with more than 30 runs of these coming in the death overs.

Varun Chakaravarthy, the game-changer

In his previous game, KKR’s Varun Chakaravarthy had endured figures of 1/49. Fast forward a few days later, he is back at his best, registering figures of 3/27.

Chakaravarthy not only took regular wickets, but also he was economically the best for KKR, with an economy rate of 6.75.

Varun’s first wicket was that of Glenn Maxwell, who holed out to Andre Russell at mid-off while looking to go big.

He later struck again in the 12th over, removing Mahipal Lomror with a wode outside off ball. Lomror went full the pull, but instead holed out Russell at deep midwicket, who took the catch.

If the contest was not done yet, Varun returned to haunt RCB towards the end of the match. In the 18th over, he got the wicket of Dinesh Karthik (22) who pulled it towards the deep, where the fielder completed the catch.

It’s not the variations that Varun is working on, instead, it’s the accuracy of a delivery.

“That’s how the game of cricket is. Last match I went for 49, today I get this award. My focus is on my accuracy, not to add variations. I have been working a lot,” said a confident Varun after the match.

RCB, meanwhile, will look to get things right. They dropped a few chances for catches on the field against KKR, probably one of the reasons why they leaked a lot more runs than they would have anticipated.

RCB will next get the chance to bounce back when they face Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, while KKR meet Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

IPL 2023: Virat Kohli says RCB 'handed' the game to KKR after 21-run defeat in Bengaluru

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stand-in skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday admitted that they ‘handed’ the game to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), following Bengaluru’s 21- run defeat at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

A few dropped chances by RCB proved costly, as Jason Roy (56) and Nitish Rana (48) led KKR to 200/5 from 20 overs.

RCB have been heavily reliant on their top trio of Du Plessis, Kohli and Glenn Maxwell to produce the runs, and on Wednesday their batting issues returned to haunt them.

Du Plessis, used as an impact substitute, managed only 17, while Kohli (54) and Mahipal Lomror (34) scored bulk of the runs.

Dinesh Karthik too scored 22 off 18, but that was certainly not enough while looking to chase down a big total.

“To be honest we handed them the game. We did deserve to lose. We handed them a victory. We were certainly not up to standard. If you look at the game, we didn’t capitalize our chances. We dropped a few chances which cost us 25-30 runs. We set up ourselves really well. We ended up hitting the fielder to balls which weren’t wicket taking. It is what’s on the scoreboard and how to get them,” Kohli said after the match.

“We needed one partnership to get us home. We need to be switched on and not give away soft plays. We have won one and lost one on the road. It is not something that is making us nervous. We need to win some away games to be in good shape for the later stages of the tournament,” added the veteran.

KKR skipper Nitish Rana highlighted on the team’s belief of bouncing back in the tournament.

“Last 3-4 matches I’ve been saying the same thing at the toss – if we play well collectively, result will be in our favour. You need a lot of character in the dressing room to give a performance like this in our situation. The belief has always been there that we’ll bounce back,” said Rana.

Varun Chakaravarthy won the Player of the Match for his figures of 3/27.

“That’s how the game of cricket is. Last match I went for 49, today I get this award. My focus is on my accuracy, not to add variations. I have been working a lot. I would like to thank AC Prathiban and Abhishek Nayar. I would like to dedicate this to my newborn son and my wife. I will see him after the IPL,” said the 31-year-old.

RCB vs KKR: Venkatesh Iyer takes spectacular catch to dismiss Virat Kohli; Watch video

Virat Kohli, leading Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Wednesday against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), helped his team get off to a strong start in a run-chase of 201.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Kohli and Faf du Plessis help RCB post 30 runs inside just the first two overs, but RCB soon lost du Plessis (17) to KKR Impact Player Suyash Sharma .

However, Kohli went onto collect a few boundaries, and eventually get to his half-century, off 33 balls. The RCB stand-in skipper also went onto forge a 55-run stand with Mahipal Lomror for the fourth wicket.

Kohli, however, did not spend too long after his fifty, as he was eventually dismissed for 54 by Andre Russell in the 12th over.

Kohli was looking to change gears and collect a few maximums in the second half of the chase, but his plan backfired after he was caught by Venkatesh Iyer at deep midwicket.

It was a short ball outsideoff from Russel, and Kohli stood firm to play the pull shot, and for a moment, it seemed as though it would go all the way, but Venkatesh Iyer in the deep had other plans, diving to his left to complete the catch.

IPL 2023: Abhinav Manohar, Afghan spinners headline GT's collective effort in win over MI in Ahmedabad

The IPL 2023 match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday was a perfect example of what could happen, if you tend to leak too many runs in the final few overs of an innings.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

GT were clinical in the approach against MI, and yet again, Shubman Gill (56) rose up to the occasion, hitting his third half-century of the ongoing IPL season.

And at 130/3 from 15 overs, probably nobody would have expected GT to go onto amass a 200-plus total. Maybe, just maybe, Titans would have been happy with a 180ish total, but a total like 207/6, the Titans welcomed it with open arms.

In MI’s reply, most of their batters, including skipper Rohit Sharma, seemed far from determined to chase it down. Maybe, the pressure of a big chase took a toll on them. Maybe, the batters’ approach to the chase was just not right. And maybe, if a batter like Suryakumar Yadav (23) had got going, MI still would have had a fighting chance.

Nehal Wadhera (40 off 21) struck at a good rate of 190, but he lacked a partner who could ably support him from the other end. And to make matters worse, Cam Green (33) was dismissed in the wrong time, in the 11th over, just when MI were looking to claw back into the game.

After the match, Rohit Sharma admitted the obvious, that MI’s batting could not get going.

“We have a strong batting lineup to achieve the target. Today our batting couldn’t get going. There’s a lot of dew as well so if we had batted well then maybe we would have chased it. But we didn’t start well and you don’t do that when you are chasing 200-plus,” said Rohit at the presentation ceremony.

Where MI lost the game

So where did Mumbai Indians lose the match? The most defining moment of the GT innings, and even possibly the match, came in the 18th over, bowled by Cameron Green, when he went for 22 runs.

Conceding a total in excess of 200 is the last thing a bowling team needs, but unfortunately, MI endured exactly that.

Green began with a short ball to Miller that the latter pulled for a single, but it was from the second delivery that Green’s nightmare began.

In the second ball, Green once again launched a short ball, only for Abhinav Manohar to nail the pull over the midwicket boundary.

Manohar then followed it up with another maximum, clearing long-off for another maximum and to inflict more misery on Green and MI.

Green’s problems were not done just yet. David Miller was on strike to face the last ball of the over, and made a bit of room for the shot, getting into the slot, and lofting over the gap between long-off and long-on for another maximum.

Abhinav was soon dismissed in the 19th over by Riley Meredith, but then came Rahul Tewatia, who did Tewatia things yet again.

He began with a sweep on the leg side for a six, and collected two more of those, to finish with 20 off just five deliveries (A strike-rate of 400!).

Rashid, Noor Ahmad team up

Credit must go to Afghanistan’s duo of Rashid Khan (2/27) and Noor Ahmad (3/37). The duo shared five wickets between them, and both were equally impactful in restricting MI.

And one more common thing? Both the Afghans took two wickets in their same, respective overs.

While Rashid saw off Kishan and Tilak in the eighth over, Noor, just 18 years old, got rid of Cam Green and Tim David in the 11th, to leave MI five down. Noor, saying that he is making not just GT proud, but Afghanistan as well.

“It’s great to have him in the side and sharing the bowling partnership with him since last year. That kid, he just wants to learn and he’s working so hard. Last year the way he was working, bowling lots in the nets, kept asking the questions.

“Even when I was in the gym, he was coming to the gym and saying, ‘let’s bowl here in the gym.’ At 1AM, 2 AM he was bowling with me in the gym. He wanted to get better and perform. He got the opportunity now and he’s been delivering. I am so happy for him that he’s delivering. It’s a great news for GT and also for Afghanistan,” Rashid said after the match.

While GT looked a near-perfect side on Tuesday, for MI, it’s about going back to the basics, and getting certain areas like death bowling correct. Be it batting or bowling, the final overs are where a team can lose a game, and MI would hope not to repeat the mistake again, when they face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.

For GT, it’s a trip to Kolkata next, where they will face KKR on Saturday.

IPL 2023: 'We gave too many runs', laments MI skipper Rohit Sharma after 55-run defeat to GT

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma termed his team’s 55-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023 as a ‘little disappointing’, lamenting that his team went for ‘few too many runs’ in the last few overs of the GT innings.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

GT were only 100/3 in 12.1 overs, but MI went onto concede more than 100 runs in the next 7.5 overs, with the Titans finishing their innings at 207/6.

In fact, 77 runs came off the last five overs, with Abhinav Manohar and David Miller running riot for GT with boundaries and maximums all over the park.

In reply, there was not much determination from most of MI’s batters as they were restricted to 152/9 from 20 overs.

“It’s a little disappointing. We pretty much had control of the game till the last few overs when we went for too many runs. It’s just about execution. We need to execute what’s right, who are the batsmen, those kind of things. But in the end we didn’t do that and gave too many runs. You’ve got to look at every team has very different strengths. We have a strong batting lineup to achieve the target. Today our batting couldn’t get going,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation ceremony.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya said that captaincy was something he backed his instincts on.

“That has been my motto, always taken calls on situations. T20 is very funny, a couple of sixes can change your mind. Captaincy is something I back my instincts on. Me and Ashu Pa have a similar mindset, we back our calls and we have similar calls.

“ Today, the idea of bowling Rashid and Noor was simple. They like pace with Green and Tim David who are big hitters, and that’s why we wanted to offer them spin and offer them spinners that are difficult to read,” said Hardik.

Abhinav Manohar, declared Player of the Match for his 21-ball 42, said he was ‘lucky’ to be part of GT.

“Lucky to be in this franchise. We get to bat for as long as we want in the net sessions here. I practice a lot and have a lot of self belief because of it. That’s paying off. I’ve been gifted to time the bowl well and have been doing it since a young age, to do it at this level feels like a dream,” the 28-year-old said.

The win took GT to second place with 10 points but MI remained static in seventh place with six points.

IPL 2023: Axar Patel's all-round display helps DC overcome SRH in David Warner's 'homecoming' game in Hyderabad

“Love it here, it’s an amazing crowd, they always come here and support. Thanks for all the support. The game throws us challenges, for us, it’s great to get two points.”

It was a happy ‘homecoming’ for David Warner on Monday as his Delhi Capitals (DC) side got the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), his former side, in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Uppal.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

For Delhi Capitals, more than the batters, it was a collective effort from the bowlers that led them to victory, as they successfully defended a total of 144/9.

Time and again, Axar Patel has saved Delhi Capitals on numerous occasions, and Monday witnessed a similar story, with Axar’s all-round performance having a major say in DC’s second consecutive win this season.

DC opted to bat after winning the toss, but it was a run-a-ball 34 from Axar, along with Manish Pandey (34) that  led the Capitals to 144. Prithvi Shaw, the out-of-form youngster, was dropped in favour of England’s Phil Salt, but even then, Salt failed to get going, and was dismissed for a golden duck by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Most of the SRH batters seemed like they lacked confidence, as Anrich Nortje (2/33) and Axar Patel (2/21) ran riot, and Aiden Markram was right to point out SRH’s lack of intent in their batting.

Mayank Agarwal scored a39-ball 49 and Heinrich Klaasen played a 19-ball knock of 31, and time was running out for SRH before Washington Sundar (24* off 25 balls) could  try to do what Axar Patel did with the bat: Stand and deliver.

“Not good with the bat. Not enough intent, not excited to win a game of cricket unfortunately. We have to go back and see how we can be free and be better. It is difficult, you can say all the right things but guys have to buy into it.

“We want to play a certain brand of cricket and if we get it wrong doing that then we’ll sleep a lot better at night. Tonight we lacked intent, unfortunately we are letting us down because of a lack of intent,” Markram said at the presentation ceremony.

Washington Sundar’s triple strikes

DC had posted 49/2 in the powerplay phase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but it was later Washington Sundar’s magic with the ball that gave SRH momentum, albeit momentarily in the game.

Sundar struck thrice in the eighth over of the match, getting two big wickets in Warner and Sarfaraz Khan, before seeing off Aman Khan to conclude the over.

Apart from Axar, Warner has been instrumental for DC this campaign so far, so to get the wicket of the Aussie is always a big relief.

To put to context, Warner has scored four half-centuries so far this season, which goes onto show that the skipper himself has been the backbone of DC.

On Monday, Warner was dismissed for 21, with the36-year-old going for the slog sweep only to find Harry Brook taking the catch at deep backward square leg.

Sarfaraz, too, got dismissed in similar fashion, falling victim to the sweep and finding the deep backward square-leg fielder, only this time, it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the catch.

From 49/2, DC were restricted to 62/5, but it was later a crucial 69-run stand between Manish Pandey and Axar Patel that took them to 144.

Mukesh Kumar seals the deal

Mukesh Kumar had gone for 15 runs in the 18th over of the SRH run-chase. He was hit for two fours by Klaasen, and another one by Washington Sundar, so there’s always bound to be some tension when you are asked to bowl the final over and defend 13 runs.

But, Mukesh did not let slip the opportunity. He rose to the occasion in fact, delivering some brilliant yorkers and bowling some fine lengths, with just five runs coming off that final over.

He may not have taken a wicket on Monday, but he sure did make an impact, in helping DC restrict SRH to 137/6. Afterall, it was a collective bowling effort from DC, irrespective of having taken a wicket or not, because a victory is all that matters at the end of the day. And Delhi Capitals did exactly that.

For SRH, it will be about improving on certain areas and getting back to the drawing board. SRH would hope that by now, they know their opponents better, because they face DC once again in a few days time, in the reverse fixture at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.

IPL 2023: Aiden Markram says SRH 'lacked intent' against DC in Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Aiden Markram lamented his team’s lack of intent following their seven-run defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Uppal on Monday.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

That defeat was their third successive loss, and Markram admitted that his bowlers did not deserve to be on the losing side.

Washington Sundar had picked three wickets in a single over, removing David Warner, Sarfaraz Khan and Aman Khan in the eighth over, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/11) and T Natarajan (1/21) were also among the wickets. Their collective effort helped them restrict DC to 144/9.

“Not good with the bat again, not enough intent. We looked a team that was not excited to win a game of cricket unfortunately. We’ll have to go back to look how we can chase better, be more free as a team and as a unit and hopefully that can help us going forward. It’s difficult. You can say all the right things but ultimately guys need to buy into it. We want to play a certain brand of cricket and if we get it wrong doing that then we’ll sleep a lot better at night. But unfortunately tonight, just lacked a bit of intent,” said Markram at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Incredibly proud of them and executed great game plans, kept it pretty simple and used the conditions pretty well tonight. It’s a pity we couldn’t get the job done for them. Our bowlers didn’t deserve to be on the losing side like this tonight,” added the South African.

‘Great to get two points’: Warner

Monday’s win was DC’s second on the trot after the Capitals had beaten Kolkata Knight Riders on 20 April. Skipper David Warner said it was ‘great to get two points’.

Warner, who led SRH to their maiden IPL title in 2016, relished on returning to Hyderabad.

“Love it here, it’s an amazing crowd, they always come here and support. Thanks for all the support. The game throws us challenges, for us, it’s great to get two points. Mukesh under pressure was amazing. Well done to him and the the two spinners, they’ve been our rock. These two are experienced bowlers, they are never going to let you down,” said the Aussie.

Ishant Sharma finished with figures of 1/18 from three overs, and Warner was impressed by the speedster.

“Credit to him. He’s worked very hard to get back into the IPL and to bowl as well as he did was exceptional. To win tonight, hopefully we can make it three in a row. We’ve got another against Sunrisers next,” Warner concluded.

Axar Patel, the Player of the Match, said that his figures of 2/21 was more important.

“2/21 since I scored 34 in 34 so the two wickets were more important. I ordered for coffee and I left the glass like that, when three wickets fell in one over. Pandey and I discussed we need to take it as deep as possible,” said Axar.

Following a run-a-ball 34 after DC opted to bat against SRH, Axar registered figures of 2/21 from four overs,
Axar had removed Mayank Agarwal for 49 in the 12th over, before cleaning up SRH skipper Aiden Markram in the first ball of the 15th over.

Both wickets came in a timely manner. While Agarwal was looking set for a half-century in a bid to keep SRH’s hopes alive, Hyderabad needed Markram to get going in their bid to chase down a target of 145, but the SRH captain’s dismissal proved to be a costly one. For Axar, it was about striking at the right time for DC.

IPL 2023: Ajinkya Rahane stands out among the batters as clinical CSK prevail over KKR

If there was one word to describe Chennai Super Kings’ performance against Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match at Eden Gardens on Sunday, it would be: Clinical.

IPL 2023: Full coverage | Points table | Schedule | Results | Orange Cap | Purple Cap

Sunday witnessed a perfect win for CSK against KKR in the latter’s home ground, and courtesy a dominant display by the batters, the match was more or less sealed in the first-half itself.

Devon Conway (56), Ajinkya Rahane (71*) and Shivam Dube (50) scored half-centuries to help CSK post the highest T20 total at Eden Gardens (235/4), but it’s only fair to say that every CSK batter rose up to the big occasion.

Be it Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 20-ball 35 or Ravindra Jadeja’s eight-ball 18, none of the CSK batters’s performances went unnoticed. And it did not even feel like they were missing the services of Ben Stokes and Deepak Chahar.

Conway continues a streak, Rahane stands out again

Sunday was not the first occasion when Ajinkya Rahane stood out among the rest. Well, practically, it was the trio of Rahane, Conway and Dube who stood out on Sunday, but what made Rahane’s knock unique was his aggressive approach to the innings.

Rahane came into bat at number three in the eighth over following Gaikwad’s dismissal, and collected a boundary off Suyash Sharma’s delivery in the first over he faced. Almost four overs, later, Rahane would once again beat Suyash for another boundary in the 12th over, but it was not until the 14th over when the 34-year-old actually changed gears.

Rahane was facing Umesh Yadav in that over, and he literally punished the pacer in that one, slamming two consecutive sixes and a four to give himself some confidence. Rahane went over deep backward square for the first maximum, while hoisting over fine leg for the second six.

That was followed by a four, courtesy a stunning cover drive from the Man of the Moment yet again, Rahane himself.

Rahane, who forged an 85-run stand with Shivam Dube for the third wicket, continued picking the important runs, even by rotating strike with singles, and even brought up his fifty off just 24 balls in the final ball of the 17th over, but he was not done just yet.

After flicking Kulwant Khejroliya for a four in the final ball of the 18th over, Rahane would then punish Varun Chakaravarthy for two powerful sixes over long on, and then a four, opening the face of the bat to dispatch over short third man.

Rahane’s 29-ball 71 was so reminiscent of his 27-ball 61 not long back against Mumbai Indians early in April.

New Zealand’s Devon Conway, too, has been in fine form this season, and he went one better on Sunday with his fourth consecutive fifty in the IPL this season.

Conway had scores of 50, 83 and 77* in his last three matches, and Sunday was yet another perfect example of what can happen when the Kiwi batter gets going.

Conway, who put up a 73-run stand for the first wicket with Gaikwad, got to his fifty in 34 deliveries, and his knock was the first of many productive knocks from the CSK outfit that would help them post an unassailable total.

“My partnership with Rutu at the top, it calms the nerves for me. We try to keep it simple. A lot of credit goes to Rutu,” said Conway after the match, while also adding how special it was to have MS Dhoni in the team setup.

“We have a good vibe in the group. For us, it’s about continuing this momentum and moving forward in the tournament. Having MS in your group, it’s great to have him. It does feel like a home fixture every time we play. CSK fans get behind him and us as a group, good to be part of this group,” the Kiwi batter added.

Worrying signs for KKR

KKR have found life without the injured Shreyas Iyer very hard. Their only two victories came against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans, and the defeat to CSK was their fourth in a row this season.

KKR are currently in eighth place in the IPL standings with just four points, exactly as many points away from top four.

With KKR having completed half of their league games, the road is only going to get tougher for Nitish Rana and Co.

For Rana, the defeat to CSK was ‘tough to digest’.

“Tough to digest. Always going to be difficult chasing 236 especially if you don’t have a good powerplay. Have to give credit to Rahane. As I said, it’s tough to digest that we conceded a score like that. We do have some positives. But if you don’t improve. If you keep repeating mistakes against such a big team, you’ll lose,” Rana had said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Jason Roy scored 61 after coming into bat at No 5, while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 53. Most of the other batters lacked confidence and failed to get going.

Will Roy bat up the order? And is there a need to rethink the team strategy? These will be some questions KKR will need to answer before their next game against RCB on Wednesday.

CSK, meanwhile, sit atop the standings with 10 points and will get an opportunity to build on that momentum, when they lock horns against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday.
