'Everyone wants to play Test cricket': Suryakumar Yadav speaks on possible Test debut during IND vs AUS series
India star batter Suryakumar Yadav is in line for a Test debut in the much-anticipated series against Australia beginning in Nagpur on February 9. And in a press conference on Tuesday, the Mumbaikar spoke about the possibility of him making his Test debut.
“Obviously, everyone wants to play Test cricket. You start your cricket at domestic level, playing with red ball only, and I played for Mumbai,” said Suryalumar on the eve of the third T20I between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad. “We all know how exciting the series would be, but at the same time, it’s about staying in the present and the focus is on how to give your best for tomorrow’s game, then we have full time to think about Tests.”
Suryakumar also played down the Ekana Stadium pitch controversy, saying the wicket doesn’t matter a lot and they are “fine” with any type of surfaces.
India skipper Hardik Pandya had termed the Ekana pitch a “shocker” after a tense 100-run chase, which was achieved in the penultimate delivery of the match. The curator was blamed for the fiasco and had been sacked.
IND vs NZ: India, Black Caps aim to go all out in T20I series decider
“We (Hardik and I) had a chat later on, and it was like, whatever we got in future we will go with it. It’s completely fine,” Surya said on the eve of the series-decider at Motera.
“It doesn’t matter what soil you play on. These are the things which aren’t in your control. We did what we had in our control, we had to adapt, apply on that ground and move on with the situation. But it was an exciting game.
“Any game, ODI or T20I, low or high scoring, if there’s competition in the game, wickets, I don’t think, matter a lot. You go out there, have a challenge, accept it and move on,” Surya added.

In tricky conditions, New Zealand had reduced India to 83/7 and the hosts needed 17 runs from the last two overs, with Surya and Hardik in the middle.
The duo brought down the equation to six runs from the last over.
“Actually, we have been batting together for a very long time now. We had some good partnerships in the past.
“At that time, it was very important for us to have good communication and have a nice atmosphere as we knew that it was a little tense in the last over.
“We were just having a laugh, backing each other and telling each other whoever got an opportunity let’s try and finish the game,” he said about their strategy.

— BCCI (@BCCI) January 30, 2023
The Mumbaikar attributed his exploits in domestic cricket to his composure while batting in tense situations.
“I’ve played a lot of domestic cricket before making my international debut, that has helped me a lot.
“You have to apply yourself a lot and the grind you have there, playing on different challenging tracks, I just carried it from there. Rest I’ve learnt seeing so many senior players in the team, talking to them. Every game, I try to put my best foot forward.”
The world’s No. 1 T20I batter has come a long way since making his debut against England at the same venue on March 14, 2021.
Turning a touch emotional, he said: “I told my manager also ‘I’m back where it all began’. Even I took the steps slowly thinking of 2021 and how I came here.
“I’ve very good memories, but it will be completely different now. I’m very excited. Beautiful stadium, amazing crowd, looking forward to an exciting game tomorrow,” he signed off.

Mohammad Amir will be in contention for selection if he continues to perform: Pakistan chief selector
Mohammad Amir’s hopes of making an international return received a boost with Pakistan chief selector Haroon Rashid saying the pacer could be in contention if he continues to perform.
Amir had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020 accusing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of subjecting him to “mental torture”. Since then, he has taken to playing T20 leagues across the world, including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) where he is currently representing Sylhet Strikers.
And with his two-wicket haul against Khulna Tigers on Monday, Amir became the third-quickest bowler to 50 wickets in the league, a record that he shares with former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi.
“I have heard he is thinking of taking his retirement back. It is good that he is playing. If he continues to perform, he will be in contention for selection like other players,” Rashid was quoted as telling Cricket Pakistan.

Rashid was appointed the PCB chief selector on a permanent basis last Monday, taking over from Afridi who had been appointed by the Najam Sethi-led administration on a temporary basis. Rashid had previously served as the chief selector in 2015 and 2016 and had also served as PCB’s Director of Cricket Operations as well as team manager.
Amir, who burst into the international scene as a teenager in 2009, had served a five-year ban for his role in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, for which he even had to spend some time in a British jail.
He would make his way back into the Pakistan team in 2016 and played a key role in their triumph in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they beat arch-rivals India in the final at the Oval.

India vs New Zealand: Lucknow curator sacked over pitch conditions in 2nd T20I
The curator of the pitch at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium which had come under criticism from India captain Hardik Pandya has been sacked, said a media report. While India won the Lucknow T20I by six wickets to stay alive in the three-match series, it was a very difficult pitch to bat on. New Zealand managed 99/8 in 20 overs batting first and India in reply crawled successfully to the target in 19.5 overs. No six was hit in the match.
After the game, a disappointed Pandya had labelled the pitch a “shocker of a wicket”.
“To be honest, this was a shocker of a wicket. Two games the kind of wickets we have played on. I don’t mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets are not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the stadium whichever we are going to play in T20, they should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier, rather than having a couple of games there,” Pandya had said.
According to a report in the Indian Express, the pitch curator has been replaced by Sanjeev Agarwal from Gwalior to get the pitch ready for IPL 2023. The report also added that the last-minute request from Team India management could have played a role in the pitch behaving so poorly. It said that two black soil pitches were prepared for the game but the management asked the curator three days before the game to prepare a red soil pitch, however, the lack of time led to a slow pitch.
Even the pitch on offer in the first T20I in Ranchi favoured the spinners strongly though batting was still easier there.
India’s third T20I will be played on Wednesday (1 February) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Mickey Arthur set to be Pakistan team director, will travel with team during high-profile events: Reports
Veteran cricket coach Mickey Arthur is set to join the Pakistan dressing once again, albeit as a team director and not as a head coach.
There has been a significant hiatus around the appointment of Mickey Arthur as Pakistan’s head coach for quite a while – almost after Najam Sethi was appointed as the PCB Chief, to be specific.
ESPNCricinfo reported on Monday that Arthur is close to signing a deal with the PCB as a team director.
The PCB, as Najam Sethi had made evident in his earlier comments, was keen to have Arthur as the head coach of the side. However, he is currently coaching the English county Derbyshire and is not willing to let go of that position.
Arthur has a contract with Derbyshire till 2025. Arthur will now simultaneously take up the role of team director from 1 April, the report states.
The manner in which the operations will be conducted is quite unusual and the first of its kind in international cricket as Pakistan will not name anyone else as a head coach. Arthur will travel with the team on tours and tournaments he decides and will handpick a group of personnel to run the operations.
Grant Bradburn, who served as Pakistan’s fielding coach earlier will be a high-powered assistant coach. There will be three additional batting, bowling, and fielding coaches.
Several media reports from Pakistan organisations also termed the role of Arthur to be of an online coach.
Micky Arthur will be 1st World ON-LINE coach of Pakistan International team.

Arthur is expected to join with the team only during the ODI World Cup and later when Pakistan tours Australia for a Test series. However, the South African-Australian will not be available for the Asia Cup that Pakistan is expected to host.
Arthur was Pakistan’s head coach during the 2016-2019 period and largely transformed the Pakistan squad after their slump in white-ball cricket. The highlight of his stint was when he led the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side to the 2017 Champions Trophy win beating arch-rivals India in the finals.
Arthur had a short stint with Sri Lanka after 2019 and since then, has been with Derbyshire.

India vs New Zealand: Spin-heavy contest, SKY-Hardik helps hosts cross finish line and more talking points from 2nd T20I
Team India kept themselves alive in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in Lucknow, with a nervy six-wicket win on Sunday. With the victory, the Men in Blue levelled the series 1-1 with the decider to be played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Indian bowlers did well to restrict the Kiwis to 99/8 inside 20 overs, but the hosts’ chase was far from straightforward.
The run-outs of Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar hurt the hosts’ momentum, while Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi failed to convert starts. And yet, Suryakumar Yadav (26*) and Hardik Pandya (15*) took India over the finish line with just a ball to spare.
Let’s now take a look at some key talking points from the contest:
Arshdeep finds his rhythm again
Pacer Arshdeep Singh was heavily criticised for leaking runs in the first T20I, especially after he conceded 27 runs off the final over in the series-opener in Ranchi. In that same final over, Arshdeep had started off with a costly no-ball that went for a six off Daryl Mitchell, and that followed up with a free-hit, and successive boundaries by the Black Caps.
However, Arshdeep showed improvement in the second T20I on Sunday, finishing with figures of 2/7 from two overs. His short balls were effective on Sunday, and managed to dismiss Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson. Moreover, the 23-year-old did not concede a no-ball and finished with an economy of 3.50.
Spin-heavy contest
Lucknow witnessed a spin-heavy contest on Sunday. A total of 30 overs in the match were bowled by spinners, with New Zealand spinners accounting for 17 overs alone, and what’s more, not even a single six was hit by either team during the course of the match.
Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, and Washington Sundar were all effective, with each of them accounting for a wicket with decent economical figures, with Chahal even bowling a maiden over.
For New Zealand, skipper Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi and Glenn Phillips all completed their quota of four overs, while Mark Chapman was also given a go for one over.
Run-out mix-ups
Both Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar were involved in two separate mix-ups that led to their respective run-outs. While Kishan fell short at the bowlers’ end in the ninth over while looking for a second run, Washington Sundar in a separate incident sacrificed his wicket after a mix-up with Suryakumar Yadav at the other end.
SKY was facing Phillips when he tried the reverse sweep, he got some bat on the pad as the ball rolled towards point. New Zealand had appealed for an LBW but Yadav had set out for the run anyway, despite Sundar’s warning to not take the run. Sundar, too, was out of his crease, and eventually sacrificed himself, with Blair Tickner initiating the run-out.
Rahul Tripathi continues to struggle
Rahul Tripathi, who had made his T20I debut early in January against Sri Lanka, continued to struggle with the bat, being dismissed for just 13 runs on Sunday.
The only match where the 31-year-old has got a start was in the second T20I against Sri Lanka, when he scored 35 runs, but barring that, his outings have been disappointing, with scores of 5,0, and 13.
Tripathi had collected a four off Sodhi’s ball in the eighth over, but barring that, he looked out of touch, finding it hard to get runs on a difficult surface.
SKY-Hardik helps India cross finish line
India had lost their fourth wicket in Washington Sundar in the 15th over following a mix-up, and the hosts found it tough to collect boundaries at regular intervals.
Hardik Pandya joined SKY after Sundar’s dismissal, with India at 73/4 after 15 overs, and could deal with just ones and twos, until Hardik hit Ferguson for a four in the 19th over. That brought cheer among the home crowd, but these were tense moments, with India needing six runs from the last six balls.
Blair Tickner returned, to bowl the final over, and he began with a short of length ball, as Hardik collected a run.
Tickner followed it up with another short of length ball to SKY that ended in a dot ball, and dropped what would have bee a return catch off his own bowling to dismiss SKY in the third ball of the over.
SKY rotated strike to Hardik in the third ball, as the skipper returned the favour in the fourth. India now needed three runs off two balls to seal victory, and SKY, facing another short of length ball from Tickner, slapped it over mid-off to collect a boundary, and seal a nervy win for the hosts.

India vs New Zealand: Chahal achieves notable feat, Suryakumar's PoTM record and more stats from 2nd T20I
Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 26 as India edged out New Zealand by six wickets in a low-scoring and tense second Twenty20 international, to level the series at 1-1 on Sunday.
India restricted New Zealand, who won the opener of the three-match series, to 99-8 with Yuzvendra Chahal leading the spin charge on a slow and turning pitch in Lucknow.
India then lost regular wickets as the Kiwi bowlers took it into the final over but Suryakumar, along with Hardik Pandya, anchored the tricky run chase to achieve the target with one ball to spare.
The match witnessed 30 overs of spin without a six being hit in either innings.
The series moves on to the decider in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
Here are a few interesting statistics from the match:
—Yuzvendra Chahal overtook Bhuvneshwar Kumar as India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. Chahal has 91 T20I wickets after he took one wicket in the second T20I against New Zealand, while Bhuvneshwar has 90 scalps to his name.
—There were a total of 239 deliveries in the second T20I without a single six being hit. Among matches played between Full Member teams, the tally of 239 balls were the most number of deliveries in a T20I without a six being hit.
—Among the Full Member teams, New Zealand bowled the second-most number of overs by spinners in a T20I. Both Zimbabwe and Pakistan have previously bowled 18 overs of spin in a T20I, against West Indies and Australia respectively.
— Suryakumar Yadav have won most Player of the Match awards for India since 2021, as far as men’s T20Is are concerned. SKY has so far won 11 PoTM awards, with Virat Kohli behind him with just three PoTM awards since 2021.

India women vs England women: How to watch U19 T20 World Cup final live
India have secured their place in the final of the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, following an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in what can be called a one-sided semi-final.
The Shafali Verma-led unit will square off against powerhouse England in the summit game and will aim to take the coveted trophy home in its very first edition. In the previous stage, the English brigade defeated Australia by three runs in a low-scoring thriller. India and England will cross swords in the summit game at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.
India have been enjoying great form throughout the tournament. They have just endured a single defeat so far in the Super Six round against Australia. In their last knockout game, the bowling unit was on top of their form as they bundled out the Kiwis for just 107 runs.
Spinner Parshavi Chopra led the destruction, picking up as many as three wickets. Coming in to chase, India lost their skipper Shafali Verma early. However, another opener Shweta Sehrawat shone with the bat and remained unbeaten at 61 runs off 45 deliveries. Besides her, Soumya Tiwari contributed 22 runs to the scoresheet.
On the other hand, England had to struggle a bit to overcome Australia in their last match. Batting first, they managed to produce just 99 runs in 20 overs. Though it looked like an easy task for the Aussies, their batting line-up also suffered a collapse. A three-wicket haul from England spinner Hannah Baker and captain Grace Scrivens’ two wickets finally brought Australia down to their knees, earning a dramatic 3-run win.

Toss update: Fast bowler Jofra Archer was back in the England team for the first time in nearly two years for the first one-day international against South Africa on Friday.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat first at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein at the start of a three-match series that the teams will finally get to play after it was postponed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Archer last played international cricket in March 2021 and last appeared in an ODI in September 2020.
He was out with elbow and back injuries but has been playing in the South African domestic Twenty20 league to prove his fitness for the ODI series.
Batsman Harry Brook will make his ODI debut for England.
South Africa recalled seam bowler Sisanda Magala for his first ODI in a year.
Lineups:
South Africa: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma (captain), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Sisanda Magala, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi
England: Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Olly Stone.

India vs New Zealand: Black Caps achieve notable feat, Tripathi creates forgettable record and other stats from 1st T20I
It was not Team India’s day on Friday as Mitchell Santner-led New Zealand romped to a 21-run win in the first T20I in Ranchi.
Having been put to bat by India, the Black Caps rode on fifties from Devon Conway (52) and Daryl Mitchell (59*) to post 176/6 from 20 overs, a target they successful defended.
The Indian top-order consisting of Shubman Gill (7), Ishan Kishan (4) and Rahul Tripathi (0) failed to fire, but Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Washington Sundar (50) revived the hosts, while skipper Hardik Pandya played a cameo of 21 off 20 deliveries.
Yet, wickets at regular intervals hurt the Men in Blue and the Kiwi bowlers were on top of their game. Skipper Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson all took two wickets, while Jacob Duffy and Ish Sodhi picked one each.
India will now have the opportunity to level the three-match series when the two teams travel to Lucknow for the second T20I scheduled for Sunday.
That match will take place well into the weekend, but for now, let’s take a look at some interesting statistics and records created from the series-opener in Ranchi:
- New Zealand have most wins while batting first against India in India in men’s T20Is, winning matches four times in six matches. Other teams have collectively won by doing so, three times in 25 matches.
- New Zealand are the only team to have defended a total of lesser than 200 against India in India in T20Is. The highest total below 200 they have defended was 196 in Rajkot in 2017, while the lowest remains 126 in a T20 World Cup match in Nagpur in 2016.
- Washington Sundar joined Axar Patel with a 50-plus score by a batter batting a number six or lower, becoming the only two Indians to do so in a men’s T20I run-chase.
- Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson both bowled a maiden over each, and this was the first time India had two maiden overs during a men’s run chase in T20Is.
- Rahul Tripathi joined KL Rahul in a forgettable record. Tripathi levelled KL Rahul’s record of longest ducks by Indians in men’s T20Is, being dismissed for none in the sixth ball. KL Rahul was dismissed so without scoring, also after six balls, against England in 2021.

Ashleigh Gardner slams scheduling of Australia game on 26 January, CA responds
Ashleigh Gardner, an indigenous Australian member of the Australian national women’s cricket team has condemned a decision to play a T20I against Pakistan on Australia’s national day. The holiday on 26 January commemorates the arrival in 1788 of the “first fleet” which brought first white settlers to Australia.
But some indigenous Australians commemorate the day as Invasion Day or Colonization Day because the arrivals set in motion the seizure of lands and the diminution of the indigenous Australian culture.
“Unfortunately this year the Australian women’s cricket team has been scheduled to play a game on the 26th of Jan which certainly doesn’t sit well with me as an individual but also all the people I’m representing,” Gardner tweeted.
“For those who don’t have a good understanding of what that day means it was the beginning of genocide, massacres and dispossession.”
🖤💛❤️ pic.twitter.com/xcXRciCFqU
— Ashleigh Gardner (@akgardner97) January 21, 2023
Cricket Australia said the scheduling of the match on 26 January will help it in continuing an “ongoing education journey” with the Indigenous community.
The Australian team will perform a smoking ceremony before the match and embark on a walk around mountain Kunanyi to learn about the local community as part of the decision to play on 26 January. The team will also wear a special Indigenous kit designed by two Indigenous women.
“Cricket Australia acknowledges 26 January is a day that has multiple meanings and evokes mixed feelings in communities across our richly diverse nation,” a CA statement read.
“We respectfully acknowledge it is a challenging day for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and for some people the day is regarded as a day of mourning.
“Cricket Australia understands and acknowledges Ash’s position and appreciates her leadership and the contributions of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the game of cricket.
“We will use the T20 International scheduled for 26 January as an opportunity to continue our ongoing education journey with First Nations people.”

India vs New Zealand: Shubman Gill's unbeaten 40, impactful Mohammed Shami and other takeaways from second ODI
India scripted a near-perfect victory over New Zealand in the second ODI in Raipur on Saturday, with the Men in Blue putting up a clinical effort to seal the series 2-0 with a game to spare.
It was as though New Zealand were no match for the hosts, with every one of the Indian bowlers featuring among the wicket-takers to see off the visitors for just 108 after opting to field.
Skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front in India’s reply, registering a half-century, while Shubman Gill, who will be fighting for a place in the ODI World Cup later this year in India, also proved why he should be one of the contenders, with an unbeaten 40.
This was India’s third successive series win in 2023, having beaten Sri Lanka in a T20I and ODI series earlier in January.
Let’s now take a look at five takeaways from the second ODI:
Impactful Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami returned with impressive figures in the second ODI against the Black Caps, finishing with figures of 3/18. It was only in December that Shami was ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh, but Shami seems to have found his rhythm back in action for the Men in Blue.
Shami led India’s bowling attack against the Kiwis by example, and he made a very quick impact after the visitors were put to bat, cleaning up Finn Allen in the fifth ball of the first over.
New Zealand were off to a slow start in their innings, and Shami continued his economical run with the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, who was caught and bowled by Shami himself.
The Kiwis were in a dire situation even before the 20th over, and Shami struck yet again with a superb bouncer, to dismiss Hyderabad’s hero Michael Bracewell, courtesy a catch from wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.
Shubman Gill stakes him claim for World Cup
2023 is a crucial year with the ODI World Cup in India taking place, and one of the players who staked his claim for the major tournament was Shubman Gill. Gill enthralled the Hyderabad crowd in the first ODI with a match-winning 208, and he followed it up with an unbeaten 40 in the second match, playing his part in India’s comfortable run chase.
Gill’s performance in the two ODIs against New Zealand was yet another example that he will certainly be one to watch out for, and a serious contender in that Indian ODI World Cup squad.
We’re just three weeks into the new year, but the 23-year-old has already made most use of his opportunities so far, amassing 455 runs from five ODIs at an average of 113. 75.
On Saturday, Gill was involved an a 72-run stand with skipper Rohit Sharma, who himself scored fifty, and eventually remained unbeaten till the end of the match, with Ishan Kishan (8 not out) at the other end.
KL Rahul missed the ongoing ODI series due to family commitments, and Gill not only welcomed the opportunity with both arms, but also made a statement with the bat, as to why he should be considered for the ODI World Cup afterall.
Rohit Sharma leads from the front
Rohit Sharma led his team from the front on Saturday, notching up a 50-ball 51 to set the platform for an easy India victory.
Rohit had got off to a start in the first ODI, but had failed to capitalise on it and convert the start. However, he made amends for it with a fine half-century against the Kiwis in the second ODI.
If it was a knock of 83 in an ODI against Sri Lanka recently, Rohit made it count against the Kiwis with another half-century, especially after failing to convert on a start in the first ODI.
On Saturday, there was a huge LBW appeal from the visitors against Rohit Sharma in the very first over of the Indian chase, but replays showed there was an edge, and the ball was in fact missing the stumps.
Rohit did well to tackle the pacers, even playing the pull shot for a six against Lockie Ferguson that caught the eyes of many.
Eventually, Rohit fell to Henry Shipley’s trap, being dismissed LBW in the 15th over.
New Zealand’s top-order troubles
In the first ODI, barring Finn Allen, New Zealand’s top-order failed to fire in unfamiliar Indian sub-continent conditions, and the Kiwi top-order struggled yet again in Raipur on Saturday.
As many as eight of their batters endured single-figure scores in the second ODI, and the first five batters added up for just 11 runs of the disappointing total.
There were a couple of notable partnerships, with Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips combining 41 runs between them, while Mitchell Santner and Phillips made 47 together.
Partnerships in the latter stages of an innings always come under pressure when a flurry of wickets have been taken by the opposition, and it was not easy for the Kiwis despite the couple of stands, as they succumbed to a low total of 108.
Overall, there was nothing much for New Zealand to smile about, and it’s not easy for a Kiwi side that is missing the services of veterans like Kane Williamson and Ish Sodhi.
All the Black Caps can now do is tinker on what went wrong in the two ODIs, and come up with a better solution to tackle the Indians in the third ODI.

Virat Kohli slams Cristiano Ronaldo's critics after footballer's player of the match performance in Riyadh XI-PSG game
Virat Kohli has slammed Cristiano Ronaldo’s critics after the star footballer scored two goals in a friendly for Riyadh XI against Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Ronaldo who moved to Saudi Arabia club Al-Nassr after leaving Manchester United was picked in an all-star XI from the country to play against PSG, which also meant a reunion for Messi and the Portuguese footballer.
While 10-man PSG defeated Riyadh XI 5-4 with Messi scoring for the French side, Ronaldo was awarded the player of the match for scoring two goals in the game.
Kohli, who on several occasions has expressed his admiration for Ronaldo, took to Instagram to praise his favourite footballer and also lashed out at the experts who had criticised the former Real Madrid and Juventus player recently.
“Still doing it at the highest level at 38. The football experts sitting and criticising him every week for attention are conveniently quiet now that he’s put in this kind of performance against one of the top clubs in the world. And he was apparently finished,” Kohli wrote on his Instagram story.
Ronaldo had come under a lot of criticism from experts after he gave an explosive interview to British TV personality Piers Morgan. Ronaldo attacked his then club Man Utd in the interviews besides also slamming manager Erik ten Hag. Soon after the interview, the footballer parted ways with the club by mutual agreement.
He then signed for Al Nassr in a deal reportedly worth over 200 million euros.
Talking about Kohli, the star India batter will be seen in action on Saturday in India’s second ODI against New Zealand, which will be played in Raipur.

Wrestlers call off protest after Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh asked to step aside as WFI president
New Delhi: Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and other top Indian wrestlers who have been sitting in protest for three days called off their protest late Friday night after sports minister Anurag Thakur gave assurances that the government will address their grievances. The government’s initiative to placate the protesting wrestlers started with the stepping aside of under-fire Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The breakthrough was achieved during a marathon second round of talks with union sports minister as the government decided to form an oversight committee which will investigate the allegations of sexual harassment of women wresters by the WFI president. The committee, members of which will be named on Saturday, will also oversee the day-to-day affairs of the federation.
It has been decided that an oversight committee will be formed & names for which will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation in 4 weeks & will thoroughly probe all the allegations that have been leveled against WFI & its chief: Union Sports Minister pic.twitter.com/lj7mvopveQ
— ANI (@ANI) January 20, 2023
Making the announcement, Thakur said the committee will submit its report in one month’s time.
“It has been decided that an oversight committee will be formed, names for which will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation within four weeks. It will thoroughly probe all the allegations be it financial or sexual harassment that have been levelled against WFI and its chief,” Thakur said after the meeting that lasted close to five hours.
“Till the investigation is over, he (Singh) will step aside and co-operate with the investigation and the oversight committee will run the day-to-day affairs of WFI,” Thakur added.
Explained: What is the controversy around the WFI President and why is he accused?
Talking to media, Bajrang Punia said they never wanted to take the protest route but they were “pushed to limit”.
“The protest is over. We did not want to sit on dharna but ‘paani sar se ooper chala gaya tha’. The government has assured us safety and security, we have been threatened by the WFI president in the past also,” the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist said, adding that 2023 was a crucial year for them as the Asian Games and Olympic Qualifiers are approaching.
Delhi | Union Sports Minister listened to our demands and has assured us that a proper investigation will be done. I thank him and we are hopeful that a fair probe will be done, hence we are calling off the protest: Wrestler Bajrang Punia pic.twitter.com/7cEBGIOwkJ
— ANI (@ANI) January 20, 2023
Neither the sports minister nor the wrestlers took questions from media.
The wrestlers had earlier in the day said that they would lodge multiple FIRs against the WFI chief, but did not do so eventually.
It can be termed a considerable, if not major, victory for the agitating wrestlers, who had said that they would continue their ‘dharna’ until the WFI president is sacked and the federation is disbanded.
However, under the IOA constitution a National Sports Federation (NSF) can’t be dissolved unless it has violated the IOA rules and regulations, or has been de-recognised by the world body of the sport.
It must be mentioned that the wrestlers have not yet provided strong evidence that suggests sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
Vinesh Phogat: Disclosing names of victims would put them in danger
Earlier in the day the wrestlers reached out to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) demanding a probe.
In their letter, addressed to IOA president PT Usha, the wrestlers alleged financial misappropriation (of funds) on part of the WFI and claimed that the coaches and sports science staff at the national camp are “absolutely incompetent”.
The wrestlers also reiterated their demand that the WFI be disbanded and its president sacked.
“A new committee should be formed to run the affairs of WFI in consultation with the wrestlers,” they wrote in their fourth and last demand.
Responding to it, the IOA formed a seven-member committee, headed by M C Mary Kom, to probe the charges.
The IOA panel includes wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.
The committee also has two advocates — Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra — besides former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is its vice chairperson.
The decision was taken during the IOA’s emergency Executive Council meeting, which was attended by the likes of Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra, Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar, along with IOA president PT Usha and joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey.
Most of the committee members are affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
IOA Athletes Commission Member Shiva Keshvan was a special invitee in the meeting.
IOA president Usha has assured that a thorough investigation will be carried out by the panel to ensure justice.
“A detailed discussion was held on the letter received from the athletes and all the members including special invitees presented their views and suggestions,” the IOA said in a statement.
“It was unanimously agreed that IOA must not get carried away by media trials. Further the EC unanimously decided that a Committee will be formed in accordance with the prevention of sexual harassment of women act of 2013 and must hear both sides and submit a report to the IOA President.
“Instructions have been given to the committee to meet at the earliest.
“The EC also appreciates the action and initiatives taken by the Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs and awaits its report on the matter,” the country’s apex sports body added.
It is interesting that Yogeshwar is part of the committee as the protesting wrestlers claimed that he was “sitting on lap of WFI”.
WFI president cancels press meet
In his UP bastion of Gonda earlier in the day, the WFI chief termed the protest “dharna of Shaheen Bagh” and said he won’t quit from the post.
“The protest by wrestlers against me is the dharna of Shaheen Bagh,” Singh, who is also a sixth-time Lok Sabha MP from UP’s Kaisarganj constituency, told reporters in his native place.
WFI files reply to government notice
The government had given the WFI President 72 hours (till Saturday evening) to respond to the allegations.
The WFI filed its reply to the ministry on Friday evening but Singh cancelled his scheduled press conference. It was conveyed that he will speak with the media on Sunday, after the WFI emergency Executive Council meeting.
Wrestlers get support from boxer Vijender
Beijing Olympics bronze medallist boxer and Congress leader Vijender Singh also visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar, showing solidarity with the wrestlers.
Vinesh had on Thursday said that more woman wrestlers came forward with their stories of sexual exploitation and they would file multiple FIRs against the WFI president.

'Nothing less than a treat': Fans react as India beat New Zealand in thrilling 1st ODI
A sensational double ton by Shubman Gill and a top-class bowling effort from Mohammed Siraj which outweighed Michael Bracewell’s heroic ton and partnership with Mitchell Santner helped India overcome a late onslaught from these two all-rounders and clinch a 12-run win over New Zealand in the first match of the three-match series at Hyderabad on Wednesday.
With this, India have a 1-0 lead over New Zealand.
Interestingly, it turned out to be a thrilling encounter and fans took to Twitter to express their views on it. Here are some of the reactions:

Michael Bracewell is one of the most destructive batsmen in the world. Omitting him from their T20 side at the WC was one of the worst selection blunders I’ve ever seen.
He’s marginally weaker than Sodhi as a bowler, at worst. NZL batted till 6 or 7 and paid the price.

This could be the best finish in ODI if Michael Bracewell would have won it for Nz.

India beat New Zealand by 12 runs in a crunch high-scoring encounter. What a splendid performance by Shubman Gill and Mohd Siraj Jai ho ♥️ pic.twitter.com/jpNKmiRdnH

Chasing 350, New Zealand lost their opener Devon Conway for just 10 off 16 balls. It was Mohammed Siraj once again who had struck gold for Men in Blue in early overs. Kiwis were 28/1 in 5.4 overs.
Following this, opener Finn Allen and Henry Nicholls stitched a partnership that took NZ beyond the 10 overs of mandatory powerplay. At the end of 10 overs, NZ was 42/1, with Allen (17*) and Nicholls (10*).
The 42-run stand between the duo with Shardul Thakur stepping in, dismissing Allen for 40 off 39 balls, with Shahbaz Ahmed, a substitute fielder, taking a great catch at deep midwicket.
Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav’s spell landed the visitors into bigger trouble as he sent back Nicholls (18*) and Daryl Mitchell (9*) quickly. Kiwis sunk to 89/4 in 17.4 overs.

NZ crossed the 100-run mark in 21.4 overs and skipper Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips needed to stitch a partnership. But Mohammed Shami rattled Phillips’ stumps when he was at 11 off 20 balls. Half of the Kiwis line-up was inside the hut for 110 runs.
Siraj picked up his second wicket of the match, sending back skipper Latham for 24 off 46 balls. NZ was 131/6 at this point.
However, all-rounders Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner turned the tides in favour of the Kiwis. Both batters took Indian bowlers to the attack. Bracewell brought up his half-century in just 31 balls. Santner served as an anchor from the other point.
Indian bowlers found it hard to deal with the sheer power-hitting of Bracewell and the duo brought up their 50-run stand and then 100-run stand easily. Kiwis reached the 200-run mark in 36.3 overs while they reached the 250-run mark in 40.3 overs.
Bracewell brought up his half-century in just 57 balls. Bracewell-Santner brought up their 150 stand in just 90 balls.
But Bracewell continued hitting from the other end to keep Kiwis alive. They needed 24 in the final two overs.
Pandya got Indians cheering once again, as he dismissed Lockie Ferguson for just seven. NZ were 328/9 and needed 22 in nine balls.
Kiwis needed 20 runs in final over to be bowled by Shardul Thakur. Thakur was not off to a good start as he was hit for a six on the very first ball. However, he dismissed Bracewell to clinch a 12-run win for his side.
Bracewell scored a brilliant 140 off just 78 balls with 12 fours and 10 sixes, but failed to win the match for his side.
Siraj was again a standout bowler, taking 4/46 in 10 overs. Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul took two wickets while Pandya and Shami got one.
Earlier, Shubman Gill entered the record books with his maiden double century against New Zealand to power India to 349/8.

Completely in favour of run-out at the non-striker’s end, but personally won't do it: Arjun Tendulkar
In January 2013, when Sachin Tendulkar played at the Air Force Ground at Palam for the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Mumbai and Services, fans thronged the otherwise empty premises to get the glimpse of their hero ahead of the encounter.
A decade later, junior Tendulkar, Arjun, has travelled to the same venue, but with the Goa side to face Services in this year’s Ranji Trophy fixture. However, unlike 2013, Arjun’s presence did not bring in much attention- maybe because it was the first day – Day 2 may be different.
But, as has been the case with a youngster growing up with a famous surname, outside word hasn’t really bothered the left-handed allrounder. Tuesday was no different.
He is focused. Focused to play. Focused to do well with both bat and ball.
“Starting with my bowling, I just stick with the basics. Bowl more and more. If I’m practicing for white-ball format, then I try and bowl as many Yorkers as I can,” Arjun told CricketNext.com in a exclusive chat after the day proceedings.
“With red-ball, it’s about bowling longer spells. For instance, bowling 10 overs at a stretch to get myself into that groove.”
“Fitness-wise, it’s about strength training like squats, bench press, dead lifts, chin ups, different exercises for calf. These are large pool of exercises that I shuffle around,” he added.
Arjun had done his bit with the ball in the first innings after picking up two wickets and bowling at a brilliant economy rate of 2.08 and was padded up to walk in next if a wicket falls.
Well, that didn’t happen and he didn’t really have to take the guard but he made sure that he bats.
Along with the coaching staff and Siddesh Lad (former Mumbai player who now plays for Goa as a professional), Arjun went to the nets after stumps and practiced his strokes till the light faded away.
Quizzed about his batting, the Goa cricketer said that he is someone who focuses on both batting and bowling.
“This has been my regime since the very beginning. I have always tried to focus my balance between bat and ball.”
Being a left-arm pacer himself, Tendulkar is of the opinion that a left-handed fast bowler brings in a lot of variety in the setup.
“A left-arm pacer keeps a lot of importance in any setup. It adds variety to the setup. If a team has a good off spinner that adds up because an off spinner can create that rough which is helpful. A left-arm pacer and an off spinner can bowl in tandem,” he said.
‘In favour of run-out at non-strikers’ end; but won’t do it’
Run-outs at the non-striker’s end has been grabbing a lot of limelight recently. In fact, there have been instances of the same in the women’s T20 World Cup as well. The mode of dismissal has received mixed reactions both from the fans and from the former cricketers.
When asked if he is in favour of such a dismissal, Arjun answered in the affirmative and said he is completely in favour of it.
“I’m completely in favour of Mankading. It’s in the Law. For the people who say it’s against the spirit of the game, I disagree,” he said.
“I personally won’t do it because I can’t stop and remove the bails in my run up. It’s too much effort and I won’t waste my energy in it but if someone does it, I’m in favour of it,” he concluded.
