'Feel bad for wicketkeepers, there's a perception that anyone can do their job': Sushma Verma
Wicketkeepers are often judged unfairly. In modern-day cricket when even bowlers are encouraged, nay, required, to work on their batting skills, it’s a near miracle that a wicketkeeper manages to maintain a spot in any playing eleven unless there’s a regular contribution with the bat as well.
So shouldn’t a wicketkeeper be judged purely on their primary skills first? Well, the direction in which cricket is progressing, that may well have become a thing of the past. And it’s a fact that India woman wicketkeeper Sushma Verma accepted a while ago as after falling out of favour with the national selectors, she returned to the grind of domestic cricket and worked hard on improving her batting skills.
In Sushma’s own words, her wicketkeeping has ‘never been an issue’ and with strike-rate being the buzzword across formats these days, the 30-year-old worked on that particular aspect with a focus on playing the role of a finisher.
Analysis | India squad for T20 World Cup: Shikha adds necessary experience, Rana’s omission sticks out
Wednesday was the culmination of her ‘hustle’ as she was recalled in India’s T20I squad having last played in the format for the country back in 2016.
In a chat, facilitated by iOS Sports, Sushma, who captains Himachal Pradesh in domestic cricket, opened up on a range of topics.
EXCERPTS
You had a productive domestic season, especially in T20s. Tell us about your preparations and what were your goals?
Well, if we are focusing on challenges then I would like to begin by talking about Inter-state T20 from where this tournament began two months back. For me, it was very different getting into a new role. I generally bat in the middle order but this season, I’ve been asked to open for Himachal Pradesh. So, as an opener, it was a very different experience. It was nice to experience how to score runs when batting at the top. You have plenty of time as compared to when playing in the middle. Situation is quite different. Initially, it was different but I was well-prepared and confident about the role. I was unbeaten a number of times and it helped my confidence.
In T20s you don’t have much time – things change at the fall of a wicket. The bigger picture is that I have to come back (in the national setup). After that, when the zonals began, my role was different. Again, I was back in the middle order. I scored some 180-odd runs and was unbeaten in one of them. So it felt good. I knew my role will be that of a finisher and I tried my best.

Mentally, I am prepared that I will get to play only 4-5 deliveries and have to maximise those. When chasing, you then have the chance to finish the match (in that situation). So in the final (zonal), I had that opportunity. The manner in which Yastika (Bhatia) was playing at the other end, there was a scope to take some time. So, initially, I played cautiously. I was very happy to finish the game. If I make a comeback to the Indian team, it’s possible I may get the same role.
So how confident are you about your India recall? (This was before the BCCI announcement)
Depends on how constantly I’m performing and finishing the game. As of now, my thinking is that the Indian team needs someone who is playing with a good strike-rate, especially in T20 format.
And when you talk about wicketkeeping, I never thought there was anything lacking. Batting needed an extra edge though – hitting with a better strike-rate. So I’ve worked on that in the past 3-4 years. This season it has come really nice. Getting selected isn’t in my control but very focused on the process. Everybody wants to play at the top level. The hustle is ongoing.
Wicketkeepers are often judged on their batting. Isn’t that unfair?
This question I used to keep asking myself when I was dropped. Of course, you get selected after performing well both with the bat and behind the stumps. Taniya (Bhatia) also got selected when she scored runs in domestic cricket. Indian set-up is different – you may not get your favoured batting position because the team’s requirements could be different. I used to ask the same question that you asked after being dropped.
Wicketkeeping is a very thankless job and very few people recognise this skill.
I have worked with a lot of coaches, and support staff across different tournaments but rarely have I found a connection where a wicketkeeper is valued purely on wicketkeeping abilities which is a primary skill. So it depends on how you are backed and this is true not just for Indian setup but in domestic too. I feel very bad for wicketkeepers because it’s thought that anyone can do this job when in reality, you require top-level skills to perform the role well. It’s mentally draining.
BCCI recently announced pay parity in match fees. Your thoughts on the development?
Very happy with it. A wide impact of this decision is that it will inspire a lot of girls to take up the sport as a career because of the financial security. But I feel there’s another change that should be made. If this equal pay structure is implemented in domestic cricket too then things will get even better. Women cricketers who only play domestic cricket, I feel they are still not financially secure. But very good to know that a lot of parents are now more confident that if their daughter does well in cricket, she will be financially secure.
There will be a women’s version of IPL from next season as well…
Very-very excited. I remember those days when the men’s IPL began. We weren’t sure about the kind of cricket that was being played. First 2-3 seasons, IPL was also different (from what it has grown to become today). So, a similar level of excitement. And not just because there’s a competition for women but also because of its potential impact, especially on our international team. We have already started playing better cricket in the past 4-5 years. It may help us tackle the final hurdle like we (India) continue to make the final (in ICC events) but somehow aren’t able to win tournaments.
Two giants of Indian cricket Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami called time on their international careers in 2022. How was your experience playing alongside them?
Paaji the Sher 🦁
Thank you @JhulanG10 for inspiring each and every woman out there . Best wishes for future. Ab to aa jao dharmshala ghoomi ghoomi krne 🤣🌻 #happyretiredlife ❤️ https://t.co/KF26a2kxNA
— Sushma Verma (@ImSushVerma) September 27, 2022
I feel very blessed to have gotten the chance to share the dressing room with them and it’s something which the upcoming generation won’t get to experience. I think these two players have grown with the game for so long and continued setting new standards for women’s cricket. It’s not easy being in that sort of system though. For example, in men’s cricket, everything is settled but these two have witnessed changes almost yearly, maybe from the day they started playing. And then they gave such performances and maintained their position at the top.
I was very close to Jhulan di. I have seen their work ethics. They were so disciplined and well-organised. It looked as if they have all the time in the world to do so much! It never appeared they can be put under pressure. Even if they were going through a tough time, it was never visible on their faces. Probably, that’s what experience is. These are the learnings I took from them: keep it simple, be disciplined and keep the determination towards yourself and your team.
You have been leading Himachal Pradesh for quite some time now. You are a senior player now. Do you think captaincy adds more pressure?
I have been asked this question a lot of times. I don’t see it as a pressure but consider it a privilege. You are getting the chance to lead your state and then you have to be at the top, set an example by performing well and take everybody along. From day one, if I can recall it correctly, probably there were just two seasons I wasn’t the captain. Maybe it was the phase when all senior players left the setup and our batch which is still playing became part of it. Leading same bunch of cricketers with whom I was already playing was a bit easy. I have stayed with them 24X7 so there was a strong bonding with them. It was like family. I have never felt like I’m a senior.
There’s a raging debate on Rishabh Pant vs Sanju Samson, at least on social media. If one gets picked, other is dropped and vice versa. As a wicketkeeper how do you see it?
To be honest, I’m not aware of this. I feel for wicketkeepers (to play) in general, it all depends on the kind of support staff they have in addition to what the team management and captain want. It also depends on the opponent, conditions and what skill you are backing. There could be days when you need Rishabh Pant or maybe in some other match, he’s not needed. So it depends on what the requirement actually is.
As a player, I feel this hype is more from outside rather than among the players. They understand that not everything will work out in their favour.
Even in my case, I used to feel wicketkeeping is something which is being ignored. But it all boils down to the reason. Maybe a certain wicketkeeper playing ahead of me because of being a better batter. So why don’t I level up as well?
Of course, there has to be clarity. The conversation should be there, informing them of the reason(s) why they are playing or not.
Is it true you wanted to be a journalist? Are there any plans of getting back to studies?
It (plan) has changed. Now, I am financially secure, working as a cop with the Himachal police. That time, I didn’t know whether I will get to play for India one day. I myself feel to be an ‘accidental cricketer’. I didn’t plan to become a cricketer but once I got the chance, have given my 100 percent to this game. At that time studies were as important. So I did my mass communication and gave my first semester exams. After that, I began playing for India and then it was hard to find time to get back (to studying). But I never wanted to be a journalist, probably saw Anjum Chopra on TV as an expert so from it I was inspired that maybe I will do commentary one day. But yes, after cricket, these options are available.
I came across a social media post of yours in which you asked for recommendations on the best place to open a cricket academy. Can you please elaborate on it?
Till the time you are playing, all your time has to be devoted to cricket alone. It’s time-demanding. This isn’t the right time to get into all this but yes, in the future, I have a wish to work in this direction. In Himachal, Dharamsala is the centre – international stadium and all. It’s not easily accessible which is understandable. But there are a lot of talented individuals in the state – both men and women. I think there aren’t enough quality centres here (in Himachal). So I feel people like us should do something in this regard. My aim is that kids from Himachal don’t have to struggle to find quality coaches. But right now, I am fully focused on my game. I’m myself practising in Chandigarh. So that’s that.

Australia vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, 2nd Test Day 4 in Melbourne
Day 4 preview: Australia will hope to wrap up the three-Test series against South Africa with a game to spare on Day 4 of the second Test in Melbourne.
Australia, who currently are on top of the World Test Championship table, declared on a mammoth first innings score of 575/8 on Wednesday following a double-hundred from opener David Warner as well as wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey’s 111-run knock.
This was after they bundled the Proteas out for 189 following a five-for from all-rounder Cameron Green, who would then go on to slam an unbeaten 51 during the Australian innings despite nursing a finger injury.
South Africa would then got off to a horror start in their second essay as skipper Dean Elgar was caught-behind off Pat Cummins’ bowling for a three-ball duck. Sarel Erwee and Theunis de Bruyn would then bat out the remaining overs of the evening session, a little more than five, as South Africa ended the day on 15 for the loss of one wicket.
An Australian victory would further bolster their chances of making the final after having narrowly missed out on a top-two finish in the previous cycle, which New Zealand won after beating India in the final in Southampton. While hoping to win the remaining game at Sydney, South Africa would also have to sweep the two-match series against West Indies at home while also depending on the results in the India vs Australia series that takes place in February to qualify.

'Truly shocking': Twitter reacts to India's squads for ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka
There were many surprises as India announced the squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka. The biggest omission is that of Rishabh Pant from both squads. While some of the media houses have reported that Pant is out with an injury, BCCI has not given any official reason for him missing the ODIs and T20Is.
Also, Rohit Sharma is only going to captain India in the ODIs, while Hardik Pandya has been named the captain for the T20I series. Once again, BCCI has not given any official confirmation on whether this is going to be a long-term arrangement or for only the Sri Lanka series. Rohit is also not part of the T20I side along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. While BCCI has not said anything officially, it’s being felt that these star cricketers will not be making a return to the T20I squad as India is looking to build a modern-day unit with the 2024 T20 World Cup in the mind.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has made an unprecedented jump at the international level, is the vice-captain for T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pandya is the vice-captain for ODIs. Sanju Samson has been included only in the T20I squad.
Another big omission is that of Shikhar Dhawan from the ODIs.
The T20I squad has a lot of fresh faces with Mukesh Kumar and Shivam Mavi getting call-ups.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to so many changes and surprises:
So, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are now ahead of Rishabh Pant in the T20 pecking order. It was on the cards. Ishan, Ruturaj, Samson and Sky is a fabulous top 4. Expect Rajat Patidar to compete with Hooda and Tripathi for the last batting spot
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 27, 2022
No reason known, but if it isn’t resting him or him working on something specific, dropping Rishabh Pant from the ODI team is truly shocking.

Good call to leave out Shreyas as well from T20Is. India have 6 players who can bat in the Top 3 in Gill, Ruturaj, Gaikwad, Tripathi, Hooda and SKY. Think Gill has been lucky to make the T20 squad. He needs to up his PP strike rate in IPL first before he plays for India.

Australia vs South Africa Live Cricket Score, 2nd Test Day 3 in Melbourne
David Warner smashed a brilliant double ton in his 100th Test to help Australia take big lead against South Africa in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
Facing pressure to retain his place in Australia’s team, Warner defied his critics and heatwave conditions with a spectacular return to form, scoring a memorable 200.
Leading the three-match series one-nil, Australia had resumed at 45-1 in sunny conditions in reply to South Africa’s lacklustre first-innings total of 189. By stumps, Australia was 386-3, an overall lead of 197, with Alex Carey not out on nine and Travis Head unbeaten on 48.
While Australia is in a strong position, two of the home side’s pace bowlers, Mitchell Starc and first-innings hero Cameron Green, are nursing finger injuries ahead of South Africa’s second innings.
Steve Smith (85) and Warner (200 retired hurt) shared an entertaining third-wicket partnership of 239 runs, as Australia took control of the match in stifling conditions. Smith’s exit at 314-3 was followed by Warner’s dramatic departure 15 runs later, retired hurt due to cramp, with the crowd of 42,614 on their feet.
Australia will now aim to extend their lead on Day 3 of the second Test.

‘Mike Hussey always had time to speak with me’: N Jagadeesan on special bond with CSK assistant coach
Undergoing a brilliant run with the bat, across formats, N Jagadeesan was rewarded for his consistency in the domestic circuit when Kolkata Knight Riders bought him at the recent IPL 2023 mini-auction in Kochi. KKR opened the bidding at Rs 20 lakh, Chennai Super Kings, who had earlier released the wicketkeeper-batsman, joined in and the two were at it before the sum reached Rs 90 lakh.
CSK bailed out and let go of the stumper who was part of their set-up from 2018 to 2022. There wasn’t much game time during the tenure but the 27-year-old forged a bond for life. In CSK assistant coach and former Australia great Mike Hussey, Jagadeesan found a true well-wisher and someone who continues to remain in touch with him.
“When I was in the CSK dugout, I was having a lot of conversations with Mike Hussey and he is someone I have idolised for a very long time. Working with him… you know he had a lot of conversations with me. Even when I am not part of the IPL and domestic season is on, he is always in touch with me. He talks to me well,” Jagadeesan told reporters ahead of Ranji Trophy fixture between Delhi and Tamil Nadu.
During his time at CSK, Jagadeesan featured in only seven games and returned with 73 runs from the fixtures. While game time eluded the right-hander for four years, he continues to cherish conversations with Hussey outside the field.
“The bond with Mike Hussey is exceptionally good. We have always been on the same page and I am someone who would blindly trust Mike Hussey because I know for a fact that he is a well-wisher for me and he wants me to do well. No matter if I was playing in the CSK team or not, he always had time to come and speak with me. Give me a lot of tips,” said Jagadeesan.
Eight matches, 830 runs and five hundreds. Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 was all about N Jagadeesan as the aggressive opener scored runs, and tons, for fun and smashed plenty of records. The consistency was right up there and a word of appreciation from ‘Mr. Cricket’ Hussey made it even more sweet. Revisiting the conversations with the Australian veteran, the 27-year-old had a twinkle in the eye and said those pep talks remain a “big motivating factor”.
“It’s not about talking very technical terms, it’s just telling you ‘well done mate’. If that comes from stature of Mike Hussey, that’s definitely a big note for me. I get goosebumps when I talk about that. I mean he is too big a person and too big a cricketer. When he tells me I have done something good, when he tells me ‘you have done well’, ‘your scores have been pretty good’, it’s definitely a big motivating factor. When he sees me in person, looks at my batting then he gives me technical advice as well,” said Jagadeesan.
After four long years with CSK, mostly on the bench, Jagadeesan will move base to the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming edition and is likely to get proper game time with the two-time IPL winners. Litton Das and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are the other two stumpers in the KKR squad but Jagadeesan is the only Indian option and that could well tilt the scale in his favour.

Australia vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, 2nd Test Day 2 at Melbourne
Day 2 preview: Australia will aim to take a big step forward towards clinching the Test series against South Africa with a game to spare on Day 2 of the second Test in Melbourne.
The Aussies continued their dominant run in the home summer on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, bowling South Africa out for 189 after opting to field.
All-rounder Cameron Green was the toast of the Australian bowling performance on Monday, collecting his maiden five-for (5/27) three days after becoming the second-most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Marnus Labuschagne also played a crucial role in allowing the hosts to seize control through his efforts on the field, running Proteas captain Dean Elgar out with a brilliant direct hit before grabbing a stunner at mid off to dismiss Khaya Zondo.
The South Africans were staring at the possibility of getting bowled out for less than 100 for a second straight outing when wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne and all-rounder Marco Jansen came to their rescue with a fighting sixth-wicket partnership worth 112.
Verreynne and Jansen batted the entire afternoon session out and remained resolute in their defence despite facing hostile spells from opposition skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc as well as a series of testing deliveries from Nathan Lyon, giving the South Africans hope of going past the 250-mark at one point.
Green, however, would end up dismissing both set batters, and would later also account for the wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi as South Africa ended up losing their last five wickets for just 10 runs.
Veteran opener David Warner then got off to an inspired start in his 100th Test appearance and was batting on 32 at close of play with the hosts 45/1, losing the wicket of Usman Khawaja off Rabada’s bowling early.

R Ashwin speaks out against 'overthinker' tag, says 'every person's journey is unique'
Ravichandran Ashwin is inarguably one of the greatest Indian cricketers of all time. With 672 international wickets and 3934 runs across formats, Ashwin has played the role of match-winner on multiple occasions for India. The all-rounder has also made a mark for his out-of-the-box thinking, however, he is also seen as an ‘overthinker’ at times.
After guiding India to a thrilling series win in Bangladesh, Ashwin shared that he recently once again encountered the ‘overthinker’ tag and hit back at his critics in a lengthy Twitter thread.
“Overthinking” is a perception that has followed me ever since I wore the Indian jersey with pride. I have pondered about it for a while now and believe I should have seriously considered a PR exercise to erase that word out of people’s minds. Every person’s journey is special,” Ashwin tweeted.
“and unique, while some journeys require them to overthink it others can afford to keep it simple. The moment someone says i am an over thinker from the inside walls, I have always thought to myself “that’s the way I play my cricket and not the way I recommend others to play”, Ashwin said.

Finally, I think deeply about the game and share my views because I believe when ideas are shared they can multiply into miraculous achievements. The fact that it may not be popular won’t deter me cos my goal is not to win the war of words, it is to learn at the end of it.

Ashwin also put in the thread that he has no problem with any of his teammates and that hsi Twitter thread is in response to some new articles about him.

Australia vs South Africa Live Score Updates 2nd Test Day 1 at Melbourne Cricket Ground
Toss news: Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl in the second Test against South Africa on a warm, humid day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground Monday.
The hosts won the first of the three-Test series by six wickets inside two days on a hostile, bowler-friendly, pitch at the Gabba in Brisbane last week.
“Not as green as the Gabba and will give us a good crack,” said Cummins on why he decided to field.
Seamer Scott Boland replaced the injured Josh Hazlewood in Brisbane, and with his teammate still battling a side strain, he keeps his place in an unchanged side.
Boland took an incredible 6-7 in Melbourne against England in the corresponding Test a year ago.
David Warner will again open the batting for Australia in his 100th Test, desperate for runs after a lean spell that seen his position come under scrutiny.
After being dismissed for 152 and 99 in Brisbane, South Africa made one change with number three Rassie van der Dussen dropped and Theunis de Bruyn replacing him.
Skipper Dean Elgar said he was surprised at Australia’s decision to bowl first.
“I would have batted first,” he said.

IPL Auction 2023: Who is Vivrant Sharma? Sunrisers Hyderabad's new power hitter from Jammu
Jammu’s Vivrant Sharma was among the few unheralded talents, who had a big payday at the IPL Auction 2023 when he was bought for Rs 2.6 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kochi on Friday.
IPL 2023 Auction: Players sold/unsold
Starting at a base price of Rs 20 lakh, Sharma wouldn’t have bagged in crores if not for a persistent Kolkata Knight Riders, who fought hard for the player but in the end it was SRH, who were willing to pay 13 times the base price of the Jammu all-rounder.
I must admit I’m so much delighted to see Vivrant Sharma escalating a kind of bidding war! While I knew both KKR and SRH are interested in him, hadn’t expected to go at 2.6 CR! A thread on him coming shortly! Here’s a video of his batting ⤵️ #IPLAuction

IPL Auction 2023: Who is Mukesh Kumar? Delhi Capital's Rs 5.5 crore surprise buy
Pacer Mukesh Kumar was one of the surprise picks at the IPL Auction 2023 when Delhi Capitals splashed Rs 5.5 crore on the 29-year-old bowler in Kochi on Friday.
However, for the keenest of followers of Indian cricket, it was a day of joy as finally, a strong Ranji Trophy performer was finally getting his due after years of toying hard in the domestic circuit. Back in 2020, Mukesh featured in a Ranji Trophy final and was the strike bowler of the Bengal cricket team leading to the final with 32 wickets.

— Delhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) December 23, 2022
Who is Mukesh Kumar?
Born in Bihar’s Kakarkund village in Gopalganj district, Kumar found his way to the Bengal cricket team through the trials of the Vision 2020 programme at the Eden Gardens in 2014. The opportunity came up when his father, Kashinath, moved to Kolkata and was driving a taxi for a living. Mukesh, however, didn’t join his father immediately while his father saw a different dream for his son. He wanted Mukesh to join the army and Mukesh made two failed attempts to join the army as well.
IPL 2023 Auction: Players sold/unsold
Kashinath finally brought his son to Kolkata in 2012, hoping to find him a job. Mukesh continued with the ‘Khep khela’ or tennis ball cricket before he joined a second division CAB league club Bani Niketan and learned to play with the red cherry.
Mukesh found his way to the first division and soon came the opportunity of Vision 2020 trials. The trials were held by experienced Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose under the guidance of VVS Laxman, Waqar Younis, and Muttiah Muralitharan.
Ranadeb was impressed with the youngster and took him under his wing before Mukesh made his domestic debut in Rohtak with an impressive haul of 4/53.
Since then Mukesh became a regular member of the Bengal squad before in 2020 Ranji show convinced the selectors to bring him to India A teams. 2022 turned out to be his year as well as he impressed with a 6/40 spell against Bangladesh, which India won by an innings and 123 runs.
He found a place in the ODI squad against South Africa as well and was in the A tours for New Zealand before Bangladesh

IPL Auction 2023: Who is Joshua Little? First Irishman to get IPL contract
Joshua Little on Friday became the first Irishman to get an IPL contract as the southpaw was bought for Rs 4.4 crore by Gujarat Titans during the IPL Auction 2023 in Kochi. Little entered the auction at a base price of Rs 50 lakh.
IPL 2023 Auction: Players sold/unsold
Gujarat Titans remained keen on buying Little with his bidding price going up with Lucknow Super Giants also entering the fray. Titans eventually claimed the Irishman with a winning bid of Rs 4.4 crore.
Very happy to be Picked by @gujarat_titans 💙 see you soon guys. pic.twitter.com/aqSiaPBvP5
— Joshua Little (@LitttleJoshua) December 23, 2022
The 23-year-old pacer has been an influential bowler for the Ireland national team and has a hat-trick to his name during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 against New Zealand. He dismissed Kane Williamson, James Neesham, and Mitchell Santner in the penultimate over of the innings to achieve the feat. He only became the sixth bowler to take a hat-trick at a T20 World Cup while finishing with a spell of 3/22. He was the second Irishman to take a World Cup hat-trick behind Curtis Campher.
During the World Cup, he took 11 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.00. His average in the format is 20.46 while the overall economy is 7.34.
IPL 2023, Complete squads: GT | SRH | RR | MI | PBKS | CSK | RCB | KKR | LSG | DC
At the IPL 2022, Little joined Chennai Super Kings as a net bowler but left the camp midway through the season as he wasn’t pleased with the way he was treated during his short stint with the four-time champions.
“I was told it was something it wasn’t. I was told before I went that I’m a net bowler, and if someone gets injured then there’s a chance I play,” Little told Cricbuzz. “But I couldn’t bowl when I wanted, I’d get two overs (in training) and think, ‘Two overs, I’m halfway across the world here!’ Maybe I was naive because I played in the Lankan Premier League and T10, I had a good year behind me. I’m an international cricketer; it didn’t seem right.
“When I found out I was a net bowler that was required to bowl at someone when the slingers were tired, I was like ‘get me out of here’ – which is probably why they’ll never have me back because I left after two weeks.”

IPL 2023 Auction: Kochi all set for ultimate 'mini' battle
Tucked in the corner of the city, the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the Bolgatty region of Kochi is all set to host the IPL mini-auction on December 23. The preparations were in full swing on eve of the big day and franchise owners, coaches and other support staff started checking in as early as 12 PM in the day.
Sporting an all-black, KKR CEO and MD Venky Mysore was one of the early birds and was soon joined by head coach Chandrakant Pandit and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.
Excitement was in the air and the lobby of the plush hotel was buzzing with activity. Just when the sun was setting and pleasant evening breeze was taking over, in walked a familiar face. Fitter than ever, former India cricketer S Sreesanth made his way to the balcony and pleasantly greeted the handful media personnel. Bulging biceps, tucker hat and sunglasses completed one of India’s biggest on-field entertainers look who seemed in a hurry to meet his former teammate and now Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra.

Nehra ji is in town since a couple of days and marathon discussions and planning has been underway in defending champions GT’s camp. The second new team of last season Lucknow Super Giants too had long meetings through the day. The likes of Gautam Gambhir, Andy Flower, Vijay Dahiya are expected to be at the auction table on Friday.

A day before the teams engage in ultimate battle of picking the right talent at the right price, it was all fun and games as they crossed each other’s paths in the hotel lobby. Meet and greets were the flavour of a very busy day but the news of the auction, on the unexpected lines, has not spread like fire in this part of the country.
IPL 20203 Auction: Remaining purse, slots, current squads of all 10 teams
“What is happening here?” asked a middle-aged lady who had her two kids for company in the hotel’s Christmas shop. “Oh, is the IPL auction? Which player is coming? Where can we watch it?” came the questions one after the another, leaving no window to even squeeze a quick nod.
Most of the regular guests of the hotel coffee shop didn’t seem to care about what was happening around them and were content with their cup, and a beautiful sunset.
Later in the evening, intensity of the wind and arrivals picked up and prominent figures like BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who had reached in the afternoon, were spotted.

The IPL auction briefing then took place and Mike Hesson (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Kumar Sangakkara (Rajasthan Royals), Trevor Bayliss (Punjab Kings), Pragyan Ojha (IPL Governing Council Member) and Venky Mysore (KKR CEO and MD) were seen with support staff of their respective teams.
Delhi Capitals co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi was the last to check-in on eve of the auction and he was quick to rush upstairs after a quick hello to the content & communications team of the franchise.

No one from the Mumbai Indians was in yet and the think-tank of the most successful team in history of the competition is expected to touch base on day of the auction. Again, there is no confirmation or clarity on their time of arrival.
After a very chilled out day, serious business will take centre stage when 405 players will be up for grabs. There has been just one change in the list as Australia’s Ben McDermott has withdrawn his application and on one of the franchise’s request, uncapped Shashank Singh has been added to the shortlist.
The first few sets – capped batters and all-rounders – is where most action is expected. The stocks of Ben Stokes, Cameron Green and Sam Curran have been riding the upward curve and the trio look the favourite to attract some of the biggest bids on the day.
Also Read | Auction strategies of all teams
The uncapped set too will keep a lot of teams interested as smart buys are likely to be the flavour of the day for teams sitting with a thinner purse. The ones like SRH and Punjab Kings, with a fat purse, it will be a shopping spree of sorts as they look to rebuild the squad under new skippers respectively.
Of the 405 shortlisted, only 87 will find IPL teams for the upcoming edition. Out of the 87 spots, upto 30 have been slotted for foreign players. It will be celebrations for some and heartbreak for most, but the fans glued to the action are in for an entertaining day where principles of demand and supply will go for a toss.

Umesh Yadav after Day 1: "There was a bit in the pitch for the fast bowlers and few balls were kicking up. It was important to keep bowling in the right areas and tried to do the same. Dry grass is there and it's a bit spongy. We were trying to reverse the ball and bowl wicket-to-wicket, we got wickets because of that."
