Talking about the game, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team suffered a defeat against the Proteas in Perth on Sunday. Opting to bat first, India’s top-order was rattled by Lungi Ngidi as the side was reduced to 49/5 in the ninth over with the likes of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya also back in the hut.

Suryakumar Yadav though held the fort at one end and struck 68 off 40 that included three maximums and six fours but fell short of partners at the other end as India were restricted to 33/9 in 20 overs.

Later, South Africa too had a struggling start as they lost early wickets and were 24/3 within the first six overs. But Aiden Markram and David Miller provided the resistance and the two put up a partnership of 76 runs for the fourth wicket before Markram eventually departed for 52 off 41. Miller remained unbeaten at 59 off 46 and anchored the side home by 5 wickets.

India will now play Bangladesh on Wednesday in Adelaide.

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe Live Scores and Updates

Pitch reportCarlos Brathwaite and Mike Atherton
"It's a gorgeous afternoon here and conditions absolutely perfect for a T20 game. It's a sizeable playing arena. The spinners will feel a sense of built-in safety with the boundary distance. There are a few cracks on the surface and you might want to use the dimensions and force the batters to hit square, mix your pace well and the pitch will help you,"

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe Live Scores and Updates

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe, which will kick off the triple-header super Sunday. More intriguing matches will follow up as the day progresses, but the matchup between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh is very consequential, especially after Zimbabwe's victory over Pakistan. And we can't yet get over that victory, can we?

Stay connected with us as we bring you all the live updates throughout the day. Toss and playing XIs in a while.

A tie between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh might have looked inconsequential at the start of the T20 World Cup or when the Super 12 fixtures were confirmed. However, a week into the round and the dynamics have completely changed.

With Zimbabwe beating Pakistan, they have made a big stride and now have a strong chance to qualify for the next round if they win today’s match. Zimbabwe head coach, after qualifying for the Super 12s, had said that his team will try and create as much damage as possible, and they surely did so by almost throwing Pakistan out of the tournament.

A Zimbabwe win against Bangladesh will entertain many neutral fans, but will not go well with South Africa and Pakistan fans.

On the contrary, a win for Bangladesh will keep everyone in the Group alive and the probabilities for South Africa and Pakistan will increase. But Bangladesh have looked lackluster in recent times.

Bangladesh have been historically threatening in multinational tournaments, but have looked below their usual standards in the shortest format of the game for quite a while. Their Asia Cup ouster in the first round only justifies the statement.

After a win against the Netherlands, they were blown away by the Proteas. Their batting has been a worry in the absence of senior pros including Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmadullah. The transitional phase has taken quite a toll on them.

A win here shall do a world of good for their confidence, more than their qualification to the semi-finals.

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine was vocal about giving more game time to the lesser teams signifying the upsets this tournament has seen.

“I don’t think that we’re trying to put a statement out there. I think that with the upset between us and Pakistan and the upset between Ireland and England, I think the statement is already out there. It would be really good to involve some of the lesser teams because it creates that bit of excitement around the World Cup, especially when you do have the upsets, and it opens both groups up really nicely.”

A Zimbabwe victory, which is definitely not unlikely, will only give strength and more voice to that statement.

Squads

Zimbabwe: Wesley Madhevere, Craig Ervine(c), Milton Shumba, Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Regis Chakabva(w), Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe, Brad Evans, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Tendai Chatara, Wellington Masakadza, Tony Munyonga, Clive Madande

Bangladesh: Najmul Hossain Shanto, Soumya Sarkar, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mosaddek Hossain, Nurul Hasan(w), Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Yasir Ali, Nasum Ahmed

T20 World Cup: Why Pakistan would want India to win against South Africa

Pakistan’s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Australia has not got off a start which the Men in Green would have wanted. Two defeats, two last-ball defeats that too (Against India and Zimbabwe), have put Pakistan in a tough spot in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup, and chances of qualification for the semi-finals doubtful.

T20 World Cup: Full coverage | Schedule | Results | Points Table | News | Photos

After two matches, Pakistan are placed fifth out of the six teams, with no points to their name but a better Net Run Rate (NRR) (-0.050) than compared to sixth placed Netherlands (-1.625).

Needless to say, Babar Azam and Co will have to win each of their next three games in order to have any hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals. Pakistan play Netherlands on Sunday (30 October), and they will round off the Super 12 stage with games against South Africa (3 November) and Bangladesh (6 November). Three wins would take Pakistan’s total points to six from five matches, but their wins would in fact depend on other results to go in their favour.

There’s no introduction needed when it comes to the India vs Pakistan rivalry in cricket, but this time, Pakistan would be hoping, and backing the Men in Blue to do a favour for them. Should Pakistan beat Netherlands on Sunday, Pakistan would hope India defeat South Africa later on the same day.

To put into context, India are on top of the Group 2 points table with four points (wins against Pakistan and Netherlands), and a win over the Proteas would take Rohit Sharma and Co to six points, and almost closer to the semi-finals. South Africa, meanwhile, endured a washout against Zimbabwe, which meant they dropped a point, and they followed it up with a dominant 104-run win over Bangladesh.

If India beat South Africa, and Pakistan beat Netherlands, then both South Africa and Pakistan would be at three and two points respectively, and the South Africa vs Pakistan contest becomes all the more important, with the loser of that match at the risk of being eliminated.

Additionally, Pakistan would even hope that Zimbabwe and South Africa lose at least two of their remaining three matches. If that’s to happen, both Zimbabwe and South Africa would have five points by the end of the Super 12 stage, and assuming Pakistan win all their three matches, they would have six points in their kitty.

On the contrary, should South Africa beat India and Netherlands, and India beat both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, in that case both South Africa and India would have excess of over six points, and Pakistan would stand eliminated.

Even one loss in their next three games would put Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign in jeopardy, since two wins out of three would take them only to four points, which won’t be enough to advance to the knockout stage.

All in all, Group 2 looks very evenly poised, but Pakistan will have to put their best foot forward and seek a turnaround in their remaining three games, should they have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Sunday’s (30 October) matches (All times IST)

Pakistan legend Wasim Akram admits getting addicted to cocaine after retirement

Legendary fast bowler and former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has revealed that he got addicted to cocaine after the end of his playing career. However, the 1992 World Cup-winner, who took more than 900 international wickets before retiring in 2003, said that he quit it following the death of his first wife.

Akram said that he began using cocaine while working as a television expert around the world.

In an interview with the Times, the 56-year old revealed that he has mentioned about the addiction in his new autobiography.

“The culture of fame in South Asia is all consuming, seductive and corrupting. You can go to 10 parties a night, and some do. And it took its toll on me,” Akram was quoted as saying by BBC.

After making his international debut in 1984, Wasim played 104 Tests and 356 one-day internationals for Pakistan, winning the 1992 World Cup. He led Pakistan in 25 Tests and 109 ODIs between 1993 and 2000 and is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers of all time.

According to Akram, he “developed a dependence on cocaine” while he was travelling away from her first wife Huma and their two sons, who were living in Manchester.

“It started innocuously enough when I was offered a line at a party in England; my use grew steadily more serious, to the point that I felt I needed it to function,” the former cricketer further revealed.

“Huma, I know, was often lonely at this time, she would talk of her desire to move to Karachi, to be nearer her parents and siblings. I was reluctant. Why? Partly because I liked going to Karachi on my own, pretending it was work when it was actually about partying, often for days at a time,” he added.

The former left-arm pacer also mentioned the selfless act of Huma, who died suddenly in 2009 from a rare fungal infection.

“Huma’s last selfless, unconscious act was curing me of my drug problem. That way of life was over, and I have never looked back,” he said.

The legendary quick sought help after his late wife discovered his drug use, but said he had a bad experience in a rehab facility in Lahore and fell back into the habit during the 2009 Champions Trophy, where he worked as a pundit.

Akram said the drugs were “a substitute for the adrenaline rush of competition, which I sorely missed” but Huma’s death shortly after that tournament spurred him to quit. He has since remarried and has a young daughter with his second wife.

The former Pakistani cricketer also addressed allegations of match-fixing during his career, again denying any involvement in corruption.

In 2000, Pakistan players Saleem Malik and Ata-ur-Rehman were banned for match-fixing. A report into the scandal by Justice Malik Qayyum found Wasim not guilty of match-fixing but did recommend that he be fined and not allowed to captain Pakistan because he refused to cooperate and “cannot be said to be above suspicion”.

The report said “there has been some evidence to cast doubt on his integrity” but Wasim said he did not read it until he wrote his book.

“I knew I was innocent. Everything was he said, she said, I heard from someone else, Wasim sent a message through someone else. I mean it doesn’t even sound right,” he said.

“It’s embarrassing because my kids have grown up and they ask questions,” he added.

MS Dhoni suggested Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya use curved bats for T20 cricket: Report

MS Dhoni suggested Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya use bats with pronounced curves at the bottom to improve power hitting, according to reports.

T20 is evolving the manner and strategies of cricket and the shape of bat is a small but impactful aspect of the modern-day game.

“It was Dhoni who had first started using this kind of bat before the 2019 World Cup. And now these Indian players have started asking for this kind of bat,” Paras Anand, managing director of leading sports equipment manufacturer Sanspareils Greenlands (SG), was quoted by the Times of India.

Hardik Pandya was struggling to hit right from the first ball during the IPL 2021 and was also out of the Indian team for a period of four months before IPL 2022. During the break, he worked on the shape of his bat as well apart from other aspects.

Rishabh Pant also has been on and off in T20Is and had turned to Dhoni for help. The former captain suggested him to use curved bats and he is getting used to it.

“These bats are ordered specially for shorter formats. The players claim that it helps them access all directions of the ground while shot-making. A bat with a flat bottom prompts a relatively closed stance whereas the round-bottomed bat enables them to have a more open stance that helps them to manoeuvre the bat easily from the word go,” TOI reported Anand explaining.

“If one shaves the bottom and makes it round, the bat has a thicker base and has more meat at the bottom.”

T20 World Cup: Shadab Khan spotted crying on camera after Pakistan's embarrassing loss to Zimbabwe

A day after Pakistan’s shocking loss to Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup Super 12 stage, a video surfaced of Pak all-rounder Shadab Khan crying inconsolably in front of the Pakistan pavillion at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

T20 World Cup Home | Schedule | Results | Points Table | T20 World Cup News | Photos

The images from the video suggest it was taken right after the match as a fan took the video of Shadab, padded up, crying on his knees. A Pakistan staff member tried to console the player. The player finally got to his senses and walked away from the crowd sensing he could be spotted crying by the public.

Shadab was among the brightest performing players for Pakistan on a day when the team was blamed of not putting in enough effort with the bat while chasing a mere target of 131 against one of the weakest bowling outfits. Shadab picked 3/23 with the ball while adding valuable 52-run stand for the fourth wicket with Shan Masood. Their partnership put Pakistan in a good position to take the game after a top-order collapse. However, Khan’s departure in the 14th over led to another batting collapse as Pak eventually fell short by a run.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam admitted that Shadab’s wicket was turning point in the game.

“When Shadab and Shan were building partnership, unfortunately Shadab got out and then back-to-back wickets that pushed us into pressure situation. First 6 overs, we haven’t used the new ball well but we finished well with the ball. We will sit out, discuss our mistakes and we will train hard and come back strong in our next game,” Pakistan capain Babar said after the match.

T20 World Cup: ‘Aur select karo average log’, Shoaib Akhtar blasts Pakistan after shock loss against Zimbabwe

Pakistan suffered yet another heartbreak at the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia, suffering a shock one-run loss at the hands of the unfancied Zimbabwe in Perth on Thursday.

T20 World Cup Home | Schedule | Results | Points Table | T20 World Cup News | Photos

The defeat at the Perth Stadium comes four days after the Men in Green ended on the wrong side of another last-ball thriller against India, beginning their campaign with a four-wicket loss.

While Cricket Twitter erupted over what will go down as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest wins in their cricketing history, with even the Zimbabwean president joining the banter over a ‘Fake Pakistani Bean’ while congratulating the Chevrons, the Pakistani cricketing community was once again left disappointed and many a fan and ex-cricketer took to the microblogging website to express their anguish.

Read: ZIM win hearts with thrilling win as ex-PAK cricketers slam Men in Green

Among them was pace legend Shoaib Akhtar, who tweeted a video with the caption: “Average mindset, Average results. Thats the reality, face it.”

“Very, very embarrassing. Really, really embarrassing. Aur select karo average log. Aur select karo average team management and the average PCB (Keep selecting average people. Keep selecting average team management and average PCB). This is the outcome.

“I’m really super, super disappointed, and you’re losing against Zimbabwe now?” Akhtar said in the clip that has since garnered thousands of retweets and tens of thousands of likes.

While the Pakistan bowling attack had done well to restrict Zimbabwe to 130/8 after the positive start they got off to, the batters succumbed to the pressure created by the spirited Craig Ervine-led side that has never reached the knockout stage of either an ODI or a T20 World Cup.

Shan Masood and Shadab Khan had rescued the team from yet another shaky start, but Sikandar Raza’s three-wicket burst in the 14th and the 16th overs brought the Zimbabweans back in the game. Brad Evans’ superb final over then was the cherry on the cake, with Pakistan losing a wicket off each of the last two balls after needing 11 to win from the last six deliveries.

T20 World Cup: 'There were tears in almost every eye,' Ireland player Simi Singh recalls historic win against England

Winning a match by Duckworth Lewis method doesn’t always earn many fans but for Ireland on Wednesday it meant the world as they shocked neighbours England in a rain-affected match by five runs as the infamous but effective method came into play at Melbourne’s MCG.

T20 World Cup Home | Schedule | Results | Points Table | T20 World Cup News | Photos

Setting a 158 for the English to chase, Andrew Balbirnie set the tone for the Irish side with a brilliant 62 at the top of the batting order. Mark Wood was the most productive bowler for the European giants as he picked three for 34. In response, England put up a 105/5 in 14.3 overs before rain put a halt to the game for good while the big screen flashed the chasing team was still five runs short of the par score.

“It started raining heavily when (Gareth) Delany started the last over (15th of the England innings),” Ireland’s Simi Singh told Indian Express. “One eye was on the big screen, where they were showing the DLS score, and the other was on heaven. We were keenly following the DLS score. Everyone was hoping for the rain to stay on, and it did.”

Singh, who sat the bench for the game as Ireland wanted to play an extra pacer, said as soon as the game was decided by the DLS, it meant the world to them with almost the entire dressing room in tears.

“When we actually found out that we had won the match, everyone started celebrating in the changing room. Everyone started hugging each other, and there were tears in almost every eye. We’re all numb. Beating England is huge, and that too at the MCG, where Ireland was playing for the first time. It was the icing on the cake,” he said.

Rain arrived at the right time for the Irishmen as England’s Moeen Ali was making every effort possible to go beyond the par total with the information being shared on the big screen.

“None of us moved until the players started walking off the ground. If that over would have gone on, they (England) could have gone ahead of us. They were only behind by five runs, three balls were left, and Moeen Ali knew about it. But it was our day,” Singh said.

India offered 'cold and not good' sandwiches after practice session in Sydney, players complain to ICC: Reports

Team India players are reportedly unhappy with the ‘cold food and sandwiches’ they were offered after a practice session in Sydney ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 match against the Netherlands. As per sources, the team also complained to ICC, though unofficially.

“The food that was offered to Team India was not good. They were just given sandwiches and they have also told ICC that food provided after a practice session in Sydney was cold and not good,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

T20 World Cup: Full coverage | Schedule | Results | Points Table | News | Photos

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is responsible for providing food and lodging during the T20 World Cup. In bilateral series, it is the duty of the host association.

As per reports, the after-practice menu is almost the same for all teams and Indian players are not being provided with hot food, which according to BCCI sources is a must after an intense training session.

The Indian team had an optional training session on Tuesday where all the fast bowlers were rested alongside all-rounder Hardik Pandya, batter Suryakumar Yadav and spinner Axar Patel.

It is learnt that the after-practice food included custom sandwiches along with fruits and falafel.

With the training getting over nearly by afternoon, it was lunch time and perhaps players were expecting a full course meal.

“It’s not like any boycott… Some players did pick up fruits and falafel but everyone wanted to have lunch and hence they had food going back to the hotel,” a BCCI official privy to the development told PTI.

“The problem is that the ICC isn’t providing any hot food after lunch. In a bilateral series, the host association is in charge of catering and they always provide hot Indian meals after a training session. But for ICC, the rule is the same for all countries,” the official further said.

“You can’t just have a cold sandwich (not even grilled) with avocado, tomato and cucumber after two hours of training. That is plain and simple inadequate nourishment,” he added.

While players took part in an optional session at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday, India are not scheduled to have a practice session on Wednesday, on the eve of the Netherlands match. It has been reported that India decided against practicing on Wednesday due to the venue offered to them which was 45 minutes away from the hotel.

“Team India did not do practice sessions as it was offered a practice venue in Blacktown (In sub-urbs of Sydney) so they refused because that is appropriately 45 minutes away from Team Hotel where they are staying,” the BCCI source told ANI.

India defeated Pakistan in their campaign opener by four wickets and will now face the Netherlands on 27 October.

'To hell with the Spirit of Game': Hardik Pandya says nothing is wrong with run-out at non-striker's end

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya feels any controversy over run-out at the non-striker’s end is unnecessary as the dismissal is part of the rule. He also took a dig at critics who bring in the ‘Spirit of the Game’ argument every time a run-out at the non-striker’s end takes place.

“Because you gave the example, we need to stop making a fuss about this. It’s a rule, simple as that. To hell with the Spirit of the Game, if it’s there, remove the rules, simple as that. The ones who have problems, good for them, that’s fine,” Hardik said on ICC Review podcast.

Hardik added that he would be okay if a bowler runs him out at the non-striker’s end as it is the batter’s mistake.

“Personally, I have no problem. If I am out, if I am walking out and someone runs me out, fair enough, it’s my mistake, not the bowlers. It is using the rules to one’s advantage. Simple as that, let’s not make a big deal, that’s it,” he added.

The run-out at the non-striker’s end recently once again became a hot topic when India’s Deepti Sharma ran out England’s Charlie Dean in the same fashion a month ago at Lord’s to help her side secure a 3-0 ODI series sweep. Dean’s dismissal led to mixed reactions with the Indian cricket fraternity supporting Deepti while England cricketers criticised the Indian cricketer.

Coming back to Hardik, the all-rounder took three wickets and scored crucial 40 runs as India defeated Pakistan by four wickets in their T20 World Cup 2022 opener on Sunday.

India will now play against the Netherlands on 27 October in their second Super 12 game in Sydney.

India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup: When a packed-MCG stayed silent to hear Virat Kohli's victory words

Melbourne: It took until the sixth over of the Indian innings for “Dil Dil Pakistan” anthem to be echoed around Melbourne Cricket Ground. The ground announcer only reverted to playing the tunes of the unofficial Pakistan National anthem at the loss of India’s fourth wicket. It was the first time the Pakistan supporters had quietened their counterparts. The Men in Green took the opportunity to ensure the chant of “Pakistan Jeetega” boomed around the MCG.

The crowd has been split 80:20 in India’s favour. Since the moment the sun broke through the clouds four hours before the match a sea of fans had flocked through the city centre. Many had gathered at Cafes near Flinders Street station for lunch and then walked beside the beautiful Yarra River all the way to the stadium.

Even a few people cruising on the river screamed “Come on, India!” as many fans started to wave the tri-colour flag with pride. There was a tingling of green as hundreds of people made the iconic walk over the William Barrack Bridge. The trams started to fill as the game neared. The fan park zone setup outside Gate 3 became the best place to absorb all the songs and cultures of both nations. People danced to the tunes of the Bhangra, Hindi music and other notorious Bollywood hits. It was selfies galore and face paint was applied to youngsters.

There were shirts with Kohli, Rohit, Babar, Rauf and many other names. The Bharat Army seemed to have a song dedicated to each of the Indian players. Pant and Kohli seemed to be names on most people’s lips. One fan could be heard telling another “Aree bahi abhi Rohit captain he” (Remember Rohit is the captain now not Kohli”)

As it usually the case the Indian fan has travelled from various cities around the globe. A set of people had flown from Los Angeles while a couple had arrived in the morning from Tokyo. Then there were the locals. Some had been living in Melbourne for 40 years and others had migrated into the Victorian city as late as a few hours before the titanic clash.

This was after all the epic of the World Cup clashes. The crowd was in such jovial mood, it took nearly 30mins after the first ball for all the ticket holders to enter the MCG. Once they were all packed inside the MCG was a sea of blue. For the majority of India’s innings it was difficult to hear any support for the Men in Green. But that was all about to change as Naseem Shah made early inroads into the formidable Indian batting.

Midway through the Indian innings, one could hear a pin-drop silence. The supporters with blue shirts had gone quiet. Many shook their heads and went behind the stands to grab some food. A few contemplated on leaving but their hopes started to rise with a couple of lusty blows from Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli. Suddenly the odd “India Jeetega” could be heard again. The flags that had been lowered started to be raised and noise went up a couple of decibels.

With each dot ball, the crowd became restless. With India needing 54 off 24 balls there was still hope, but many felt it would still need a miracle. “Nahi hoga thoda jaada he” was the general consensus. But a couple of towering blows by Pandya and Kohli and more started to believe.

As Kohli whipped Rauf’s final ball of the penultimate over for six – finally the “Kohli Kohli” chant reverberated in each section. Perhaps the silence that spread across the stadium at the last over the match summed up the tension. India needed 16 off the last over. Fans crossed their fingers. Some hugged their loves ones to calm the nerves while others simply couldn’t watch.

Not a single soul had left the arena and listened to each word Virat Kohli had to say at the post-match presentation. Kohli appreciated all the support and deliberated a walk towards different sections of the crowd to thank them. As “Chakde India” was blasted over the sound system there was hugging, kissing, laughter, relief and tears of joy. Each and every single of the 90,293 fans would remember this heroic innings of Kohli forever. This was one game they will cherish forever.

India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2022: Hardik Pandya breaks down in tears, remembers late father; Watch

Hardik Pandya on Sunday couldn’t hold back his emotions following Team India’s remarkable four-wicket win in the T20 World Cup Super 12 match against Pakistan. In a video that has gone viral on Twitter, Hardik broke down in tears while he remembered his late father, who had passed away in January 2021.

In a post-match interaction with broadcasters Star Sports, the 29-year-old recalled the role his father had played in Hardik becoming a professional cricketer, and the hardships his father went through to realise his son’s dream.

“I was only thinking about my dad. I have not cried about my dad. I love my son, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to do for him what my dad did for me. He moved cities for a six-and-a-half-year old boy’s dreams without knowing I’d get to where I am today. So this is for him,” Hardik said.

Against Pakistan, Hardik finished with figures of 3/30 with the ball, while he contributed with the bat as well, scoring 40 off 37 balls. Had it not been for Hardik and Virat Kohli (82*), India would have found the going tough.

India will now look to make it two wins in two matches, when they take on Netherlands on 27 October.

Amid speed rush, Arshdeep Singh reaps rewards for consistency and accuracy

From young to experienced, many are set to play their first T20 World Cup when action gets underway Down Under. Before the first ball is bowled, Firstpost.com brings to you FirstCup – a special series where we chart journeys of T20 World Cup debutants.

Back in 2018, both Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi set the speedometer on fire. The young seamers caught everyone’s attention with consistent speeds over 145kmph at the U-19 World Cup, which India won after beating Australia in the final. The tournament saw the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Nagarkoti and Mavi announce themselves on the big stage and draw the attention of IPL scouts. Heavy bids were expected for the pace duo of Mavi-Nagarkoti and batting mainstays Shaw and Gill.

T20 World Cup: Full coverage | Schedule | Results | Points Table | News | Photos

Gill went to KKR for Rs 1.8 crore and Shaw was bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) for Rs 1.2 crore. The youngsters were rewarded for their outings in age-group cricket but it was the bidding wars for Nagarkoti and Mavi which got everyone talking. KKR were in the mood to snap these exciting talents and spent Rs 3.20 crores for Nagarkoti and Rs 3 crores for Mavi. It was on the expected lines as Indian cricket was in desperate need for speed during that period.

While the auctions were rewarding for plenty of U-19 players from the World Cup squad, a lanky left-arm seamer went unsold. He didn’t get many chances in the World Cup and played only two of the six matches India U-19 played that year. At such a young age, it was quite natural for any cricketer to feel disheartened but it wasn’t the case for this seamer from Punjab. These were early days but his coach Jaswant Rai, especially after how the next few years unfolded, knew Arshdeep Singh was cut from a different cloth.

“It was clear after the World Cup, where he only played one or two games (two games), that there is no point to go and try hitting speed of 150. Wo to itni jaldi hona nahi tha [it wasn’t going to happen overnight], so we went the other way. Arshdeep worked very hard, wanted to make a name for himself after fewer chances in the World Cup and the focus was completely on enhancing (his) skill set, developing variations and being consistent in hitting the lengths. 140-142 ki speed bhi bahut hoti hai agar sahi jagah dale [140-142 speeds are good if you hit the right spots], toh wohi focus tha,” recalls coach Rai in an exclusive interaction with Firstpost.

After a long time, speedometer readings of Indian seamers were generating a lot of interest – home and away. Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop had termed Mavi and Nagarkoti as the future of Indian cricket. But away from the spotlight, Arshdeep was honing his skills and waiting for the right opportunity to make his presence felt.

In little over a year, the opportunity came his way when Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) got him at the 2019 IPL auction for Rs 20 lakh and the left-armer made his maiden appearance even before turning up for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The impact was immediate. In Game 1 (vs Rajasthan Royals), Arshdeep picked Jos Buttler and returned to scalp Ajinkya Rahane later in the innings. The coach knew there was still work to be done and both returned to the drawing board to be better prepped for the challenges which lay ahead.

“Performing in IPL certainly is a big boost for any young cricketer. Arshdeep was ready to work harder than ever and we focussed a lot on improving the yorker, working on variations, effectively using the bouncers and hitting consistent lengths,” says Rai.

The big call

The next two editions of the IPL saw more game time for Arshdeep and the seamer became KXIP’s go-to man to bowl the difficult overs, especially at death. He had an excellent 2021 season where he bagged 18 wickets in 12 games. Before the big auction ahead of the 2022 edition, where two new teams were set to be added, both Arshdeep and his coach were made to take a tough call. Kings XI Punjab were willing to retain the then uncapped seamer for Rs 4 crores.

“We were honestly very confused during that time. Had he gone to the pool, he could have got a bid of even 7-8 crores as the previous season was very good. But at that time, both me and Arshdeep were looking to ensure maximum game time. Who knows what would have happened in the new team, new setup, how he would have played or used. Since he was part of Punjab for few years, everyone knew him and kind of understood his game. So it was important to ensure maximum game time to get attention for the next step, and that thankfully happened,” says Rai.

Arshdeep didn’t take bucket loads of wickets in IPL 2022 but it was his accuracy, especially in the death overs, which garnered the attention of the national selectors. The seamer was captain Mayank Agarwal’s most trusted bowler, sometimes even ahead of the more experienced Kagiso Rabada.

“It was important to get dressing room and captain’s backing. Bowling difficult overs only improves a cricketer and makes him more mature. The same happened to him at a very young age and he only grew in confidence from there on,” says Rai.

Song of fire and ice

Arshdeep may not be the typical, in-your-face fast bowler, but the youngster is very aggressive in his approach — both in the powerplay overs and at the death. With the new ball, he focuses on the movement. During the death overs, the 23-year-old mixes things up well. The yorkers are accurate, bouncers lethal and slower ones effective. All this is topped up by the ability to remain ice cool in crunch situations.

“It doesn’t happen overnight. When he came to me as a youngster, I only asked him to make cricket his life. Bowling mai aag dikhani hai but dimag thanda rakhna hai. It is important to remain calm in cricket, under pressure. Arshdeep is very aggressive with his approach in bowling but over the last few years, he has mastered the art of remaining calm under pressure. Something which is any captain’s delight.

“With more game time, he has matured, knows how to bowl to fields well, use the dimensions of the fields and conditions. I think his biggest strength is to adapt to conditions and nature of pitches and dimensions of the ground. It’s very important for a fast bowler and he has worked very hard to do that well consistently now,” says Rai.

‘Cup leke aana hai… ‘

India had a forgettable Asia Cup and the tournament didn’t give many happy memories to Arshdeep either. After the defeat against Pakistan, the troll army had their swords out and it was Arshdeep who was on the receiving end of the hatred for his dropped catch. Very few talked about his brilliant over that came right after.

“It was unfortunate but he handled the situation well. He had support of both the team management and the captain. Arshdeep has become a very mature person now and the same can be seen in his bowling too, so he will only grow as an individual and bowler after incidents like these,” says Rai.

Has he put that behind him? “Of course. Only focus is World Cup now. He said, ‘sir Asia Cup mai to Asia ki teams thi, waha accha nahi ho paaya but ab World Cup leke aana hai and waha world teams ke aage accha karna hai’,” says Rai.

After seeing his teammates play a leading role in the U-19 World Cup triumph back in 2018, Arshdeep would certainly hope to do the same at the T20 World Cup starting with the clash against Pakistan on Sunday (23 October). The 23-year-old has reached the big stage and couldn’t have asked for a better setting to stamp his authority.
