Short of words to describe it: Rohit Sharma applauds Suryakumar Yadav’s ‘fearless’ knock vs Hong Kong

India skipper Rohit Sharma said he was lost for words that would appropriately describe Suryakumar Yadav’s 26-ball 68 against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup in Dubai on Wednesday.

Suryakumar smashed six sixes and as many fours in his sizzling knock to lift India to 192 for two, enough to secure a 40-run win and a place in the Super 4 stage of the tournament.

”The kind of innings he played today, the words will be short,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.

”We have seen that with him every now and then. He comes up with such kinds of knocks. He just comes out and bats fearlessly which is what the team expects from him.

”Some of the shots he played today, those are not written anywhere in the book. It was very pleasing to watch. Shot selection was also crucial. We know he can play all around the park,” Rohit was all praise for Surya.

India were off to a sedate beginning and both their openers Rohit and KL Rahul failed to convert their starts.

But Virat Kohli held the innings together, scoring his first international half-century (59 not out from 44 balls) in more than six months, even as Suryakumar provided the much-needed impetus in the back-10. The duo put together 98 runs in an unbroken third-wicket stand.

Suryakumar batted at No 4, days after Ravindra Jadeja played a match-winning knock after being promoted to the same position.

”We have also informed the group about this (flexibility in the batting order) as well. Most of the guys are ready to take the opportunity and be ready to bat wherever required.

”That’s the flexibility we need. We’ll take those chances. We are going to try and use the right match-ups,” Rohit said.

Asked about his wide range of shots, Suryakumar said some of them were pre-determined.

”Some of them (shots) were pre-determined, this format is all about what you think and how you prepare before you go out to bat,” Suryakumar said after being adjudged player of the match.

”I felt the wicket was a bit slow. My plan was clear. My role was to go in and take the tempo up and just express myself, I just loved it.” On adapting to different positions, he said: ”You (have) got to be flexible, you should be equipped to bat at any number, and I have opened as well. I have batted at all number. I really enjoyed it.”

Meanwhile, Hong Kong skipper Nizakat Khan also appreciated the way Suryakumar batted in his unbeaten knock of 68 off just 26 balls, saying that it was great to watch and rued the slip-ups made by his bowlers in the death overs after electing to bowl first.

“I think the way we started with the ball, we were amazing till 13th over, fielding was good too. But we slipped after that, especially in the death overs, but the way Suryakumar batted, it was good to watch,” said Nizakat in post-match presentation ceremony.

Hong Kong came into the Asia Cup main event after topping the qualifying tournament in Oman, winning all three matches against Singapore, Kuwait and UAE.

“I think it (Asia Cup) was a big opportunity for all the boys. I know we were away for a long time, boys were playing with injuries, credit goes to them, I am very proud of them,” added Nizakat.

India sealing one of the two Super Four spots meant Friday’s match between Hong Kong and Pakistan is a virtual quarterfinal clash for the second and last spot.

“I think we’re going to sit down tomorrow (Thursday), we will look at our death bowling, we will improve in the next game (against Pakistan),” concluded Nizakat.

India vs Hong Kong, Asia Cup Stat Attack: Suryakumar shatters multiple records, Rohit creates history and more

Defending champions India defeated Hong Kong by 40 runs in their Asia Cup match in Dubai on Wednesday, registering their second successive win in the continental tournament.

Sent into bat at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India scored 192 for two with Virat Kohli (59 not out) and Suryakumar Yadav (68 not out) being the team’s main contributors.

In reply, Hong Kong were restricted for 152/5 in their allotted 20 overs as India entered the Super 4 stage of the tournament.

After a sedate start when opener KL Rahul struggled to score freely, India upped the ante in the back-10, with Suryakumar going after the attack in the company of a fluent Kohli.

Entering the final over on 42, Suryakumar smashed Haroon Arshad for four sixes from five balls, helping India amass 26 runs. He got to his fifty in just 22 balls and went onto score 68 runs in just 26 balls.

We now take a look at some of the stats from the game:

1) Rohit Sharma became the first men cricketer to score 3500 runs in T20I history. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, who has scored 3497 runs, is in the second position and Virat Kohli is placed in the third position with 3,343 runs. Notably, Rohit is also the highest run-getter in the shortest version of the game.

2) Suryakumar Yadav’s 68* is the highest score by a batter in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022.

3) Suryakumar also smashed most sixes (6) by an Indian in a T20 Asia Cup match. No other Indian batter has slammed more than three sixes in a men’s T20 Asia Cup match.

4) Suryakumar also recorded the most runs (26) by an Indian in the 20th over of a T20I match.

5) Hong Kong is now the first associate side to register a 150+ score against India in T20Is.

India vs Hong Kong, Asia Cup 2022: KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and question of playing spinners

The win against Hong Kong in Asia Cup 2022 was not even a consideration and once India ended up scoring so over 190 runs, it was just for the records. This group has in any case been set up to ensure that India and Pakistan make it to the Super Four and Hong Kong is one match that would ensure enough points for the team finishing second to also make the grade.

This was a match where everyone in question would be expected to get some serious match practice and score some runs that would make those who were a little hesitant about their form to get that sense of security.

India duly won the match and topped Group A to make it to the Super Four. But even as a few wrinkles were ironed out in some manner, some interesting questions did crop up. While questions will always come, in every match, these were pertaining to things to do with the matches to come.

Was Rishabh Pant inclusion wasted?

There is an interesting one. Who among Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik is the choice for the T20 World Cup? If the match with Pakistan is any indication, Karthik seems ahead, which is a little surprising and inconceivable, given that Pant has been the favourite for long and he is now also beginning to get comfortable in white-ball cricket.

Also, if the change in the line-up does not merit a little bit of experimentation, why make any change at all? India’s winning combination against Pakistan just had that one change – Pant instead of Hardik Pandya – in the Hong Kong match. So, if Pant is in the side, surely, he needs to get a bat. If there is a change in personnel and no change in the batting order, especially in a match where no way all the top seven batters were going to get a hit, then why was the new player included?

No other match will be as easy, irrespective of whoM you play. As it turns out, India have two big ones back-to-back in the Super Four, against Pakistan and then Afghanistan, on September 4 and 6 respectively, and definitely you need all your potential players to get a hit. In fact, all the reserves could have been fielded in the Hong Kong match, but that would be expecting too much.

So, if tomorrow India need to play Pant in the XI against one of these matches, he will go in without any batting in the tournament. May not be a major issue, but could well become one.

KL Rahul fails to convince

After Rahul’s first-ball duck against Pakistan, there was a lot of trolling of social media, saying that whatever he did in the Hong Kong match, he’d be in a corner. That, to an extent, is true.

Rahul was nothing more than cautious in this match as well. He scored at a good pace, but at no stage looked convincing. In fact, at times he was positively straggling.

Rahul too is surely in the World Cup consideration, so how he fares is important. He has so far looked quite unsure. One wonders if he has been brought back without being totally fit. Or is it just a mental thing?

Playing spin bowling

There was one stage during the Indian innings, with Rahul and Virat Kohli at the crease when one was left wondering, “if they are not being able to deal with these spinners, how will they fare against the better bowlers”?

Both the batters found it difficult to get the spinners away, especially the slow left-arm Yasim Murtaza. Neither of them was able to deal with the slow pace and was unable to alter the normal game of stepping out and hitting him over the top. Rahul was not comfortable even against the leg-spin of Mohammad Ghazanfar. He did hit him for a six, and as Gautam Gambhir correctly observed in the commentary box, he didn’t go for another big shot even though it was merited, in the same over.

Compare that with how Suryakumar Yadav dealt with Murtaza and the rest. A swept four off the first ball, another off the very next ball and by the time the Hong Kong bowlers realised what was going on, the scoring had gone through the roof.

It was an easy win but little will be easy in the Super Four. Imagine getting stuck against Rashid Khan and the other Afghan bowlers. Even Bangladesh or Sri Lanka will pose a challenge and we are not even mentioning Pakistan.

Big teams come good when it matters the most but these are questions that could still crop up, especially the spin issue. Will be interesting indeed to see how it all goes.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, Asia Cup Stat Attack: Shakib Al Hasan’s 100th T20I, Rashid Khan’s bowling and more

Afghanistan showcased all-round performance to beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in their second clash of the Asia Cup 2022 in Sharjah on Tuesday. With this win, Mohammad Nabi-led side tops the group B and qualify for Super Fours of the tournament.

With their back-to-back wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Afghanistan became the first team to make it to the next round of the tournament.

Chasing 128 to win, Afghanistan found themselves in little trouble with Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mohammad Nabi departing at crucial stages, but Ibrahim Zadran, who scored unbeaten 42 off 41 balls and Najibullah Zadran, who smashed 43 runs off just 17 deliveries, which included six 6s and a 4, helped their team cross the finishing line in 18.3 overs.

Apart from Najibullah and Ibrahim, Hazratullah Zazai also played a crucial knock (23 off 26)

Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bangladesh batters couldn’t get going for the most part of the innings on a dusty pitch, which had a fair amount of grip and turns.

The Afghanistan spin twins Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/16) and Rashid Khan (3/22) bowled tight length and lines and spun their webs in the powerplay and in the middle-overs respectively.

When Mahmudullah (25 off 27) got out in the 15.4 overs, Bangladesh were 89-6 and it looked like they’d even fold for under 100. However, Mosaddek Hossain’s 31-ball 48, and Mehidy Hasan’s 12-ball 14 helped Bangladesh in some form of recovery and led them to a respectable total of 127/7 in 20 overs.

We now take a look at some of the stats from the game:

1) Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan bagged three wickets against Bangladesh to become the second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is. Rashid has so far bagged 115 wickets in T20Is at an average of 13.73. He surpassed New Zealand pacer Tim Southee, who has 114 wickets under his belt. The wrist spinner is only behind Shakib Al Hasan, who has so far picked 122 T20I wickets in his career.

2) Rashid Khan also extended his lead at the top of the list of bowlers with most wickets in Afghanistan – Bangladesh T20I matches. The spinner has bagged 17 wickets in eight T20I matches between the two nations.

3) Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan played his 100th T20I match on Tuesday. In 100 matches now, Hasan has scored 2,018 runs at an average of 22.67. He has scored ten half-centuries in the shortest format, with 84 being his best score. Hasan also has 122 wickets in 100 games and is the leading wicket-taker in the format’s history.

4) Mahmudullah leads the tally of most runs scored in Afghanistan – Bangladesh T20I matches. The 36-year-old Bangladesh all-rounder has scored 194 runs in T20Is against Afghanistan.

5) This is Afghanistan’s sixth win against Bangladesh in the 10 T20Is that they have played.

Asia Cup 2022: Twitter lauds Afghanistan's 'brilliant performance' against Bangladesh

Afghanistan continued their winning run in the Asia Cup 2022 after beating Bangladesh in Sharjah on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 128, the Afghan side went over the line by 7 wickets in the penultimate over of the innings.

Afghanistan had lost wickets at regular intervals and were 62/3 when Ibrahim Zadran and Najibullah Zadran joined hands and provided the resistance to the side before Najibullah went all guns blazing in the final phase of the innings. Earlier, in the day, Mujeeb and Rashid Khan rattled the Bangladesh batting unit. The two bowlers scalped three wickets a piece as the Bangladesh side was restricted to 127/7 in 20 overs. Asia Cup 2022: Shakib Al Hasan returns as Bangladesh begin campaign against confident Afghanistan

These may be early days at the 2022 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, but Afghanistan showcased what they could do on their day with both bat and ball, with their eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the tournament-opener on Saturday.

Three days later, on Tuesday, Mohammad Nabi-led Afghanistan meet Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh as the Asia Cup caravan heads to Sharjah.

This will be Bangladesh’s opening game of the tournament, and Tuesday’s match will be followed by another group game against Sri Lanka, on Thursday.

Against Sri Lanka, it seemed as though Afghanistan were the most superior side who were on top of the game. Although spinner Rashid Khan failed to register himself among the wicket-takers, he was very economical, ending with figures of 0/12 from four overs.

Fazalhaq Farooqi stole the show for Afghanistan with the new ball, registering figures of 3/11 from four overs against Sri Lanka, which is his best figures in T20I cricket. Spinners Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman too delivered their full quota of four overs, returning with figures of 2/14 and 2/24 respectively. Pacer Naveen-ul-Haq did his part, with figures of 1/23 from three overs.

In Afghanistan’s reply, Hazratullah Zazai (37*) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (40) shared an 83-run stand for the first wicket before the latter departed, but still it was quite a comfortable chase for the Afghans with eight wickets and 59 balls remaining.

For Afghanistan, that was their second-biggest win as far as balls remaining are concerned. Sure, Afghanistan will ride high with full of confidence, but it will be interesting to see what kind of approach Bangladesh will take.

Bangladesh are coming off a difficult tour of Zimbabwe, where they lost both the T20I and ODI series by 2-1 margins. But, that was without the likes of Shakib-al-Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. Both the players return to the national setup, and their presence in the dressing room and on the field will be a massive boost for Bangladesh.

Shakib would be hoping to provide balance to the misfiring Bangladesh batting, and would also be eyeing significant returns with the ball.

Pacer Mohammad Saifuddin too features in the Tigers’ squad, having last featured for Bangladesh in a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2021 last year, during the T20 World Cup.

Liton Das and Nurul Hasan did showcase some positive form with the bat in T20Is for Bangladesh, but they will be missing out on the continental tournament due to injuries. Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Naim replace the two players respectively. Both Sabbir and Naim would be confident enough to take on Afghanistan, with both of them having played notable knocks in the recent unofficial ODI series between Bangladesh A and West Indies A in the Caribbean.

Both the batters shone in the second unofficial ODI, with Naim slamming a century (103), while Sabbir scored 62.

Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi could be a threat to Bangladesh, and it would be fair to note that Farooqi in fact registered figures of 3/18 against Bangladesh in a T20I in Mirpur earlier this year. That was his previous best bowling figures in a T20I until he bettered that with 3/11 against Sri Lanka on Saturday. So far, Farooqi has scalped five wickets in two T20Is against Bangladesh.

History might signify in favour of Afghanistan, who hold a 5-3 lead as far as their head-to-head in T20Is is concerned, but with a Bangladesh lineup that consists of Shakib, Mushfiqur, and Saifuddin, one cannot write the Tigers off in this contest.

Also, there’s a milestone alert. Tuesday’s match will be Shakib-al-Hasan’s 100th T20I for Bangladesh. The 35-year-old will become the third Bangladesh cricketer to achieve the feat, after Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur.

Squads:

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain , Parvez Hossain Emon, Mohammad Naim

Afghanistan: Mohammad Nabi (captain), Najibullah Zadran, Afsar Zazai, Azmatullah Omarzai, Farid Ahmad Malik, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Karim Janat, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Najibullah Zadran, Naveen ul Haq, Noor Ahmad, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, Samiullah Shinwari. Standby: Nijat Masood, Qais Ahmed, Sharafuddin Ashraf.

India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2022: Five talking points from the nail-biting clash between arch-rivals

India beat Pakistan in a cracker of a game with just two balls to spare – as the Indian all-rounders showed why they are the best doing the rounds in world cricket – ensuring a five-wicket win on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

While Indians will have a better night than their neighbours, the fans could have not asked for a better match, as their nails must have been chewed in the last few overs of the match.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Pakistan managed a total of 147 and were all out with one ball to spare. Thanks to Mohammed Rizwan’s slow but steady 43 of 42 balls and a late flurry of boundaries from Shahnawaz Dahani gave an impetus to the Pakistan scorecard.

Spinner Mohammed Nawaz was brilliant with the ball as he scalped the important wickets of Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, and more importantly, bowled Ravindra Jadeja in the last over just when India seemed to cruise away with the win.

However, India ended on the winning side, with Kohli and Jadeja ending up as the leading run-scorers for the side in the match.

Here are five talking points from the match –

India’s short bowling strategy

India were clinical with the ball right throughout the first innings as they never allowed the Men in Green to settle themselves with the bat.

India used the short ball strategy to their advantage as they scalped the wickets of skipper Babar Azam, anchoring batter Mohammed Rizwan, and several others in the line-up.

Interestingly, Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped three of his four-wicket bowling short-length deliveries. Hardik Pandya as well troubled the batters with short deliveries and bagged all three of his wickets on short deliveries.

The short-pitched deliveries took the batters by surprise as they threw their wickets to leading edges and some unorthodox shots.

As many as six wickets fell to short of good length and short-pitched deliveries from Indian pacers, as the Pakistan batters struggled to get a steady partnership.

While Bhuvi was a success as ever, Pandya ended up with scintillating figures of 3/25 in his spell of four overs. The all-rounder has come of age and stood up to the occasion whenever India has needed him.

Mohammed Rizwan’s silent innings

Before Rizwan got out to Pandya’s short ball, he seemed in good touch and was anchoring the Pakistan innings, though not in an aggressive manner.

Rizwan scored 43 runs – in what turned out to be run-a-ball innings – in 42 deliveries. He hit four 4s and a solitary 6 in his steady-looking innings.

The batters kept revolving around Rizwan till the 15th over and were choked for runs by the Indian bowlers.

Pakistan managed only 68 runs in 10 middle overs – 7th to 16th overs to be specific, losing three wickets in the process.

Virat Kohli – Rohit Sharma’s partnership and needless shots

The two senior-most India batters stood long on the crease, but it seemed like Rohit had forgotten the approach he has talked about since he became the captain in shorter formats.

Kohli, who looked sloppy at the start and also got a couple of lifelines – a drop in the slips, inside edge going over the stumps, and a miscue over mid-off fielder – settled with a Kohliesque pull shot of Haris Rauf.

Kohli seemed to have found his lost touch as he played some exciting shots and kept the strike rotating. Rohit on the other hand was choked for runs as he scored only four runs of the first 11 balls.

The skipper finally seemed to have settled when he hit a six off Mohammed Nawaz. However, a ball later he again tried to go for a maximum, but could only find the fielder at long off.

An over later, Kohli got out in a similar fashion to the same bowler, as he too aimed for a loft over long-off but was caught in the deep, giving Nawaz a hat-trick opportunity.

The two batters getting out in a span of eight deliveries only resulted in pressure on the middle order and dampened India’s chances of a comfortable victory.

Naseem Shah’s fiery debut

Naseem Shah had a scintillating debut as he lit up the ground as well as the stadium in India’s first over itself. Shah started with a wicket of the second ball as KL Rahul chopped an inside edge onto the stumps.

A delivery later, he got Kohli to edge in a traditional outside off stump full-length delivery but was dropped at the second slip.

To add to the drama, Rohit Sharma was beaten on the last ball of the over, but the Pakistan fielders thought there was an edge and appealed in unanimity. However, the umpire denied the appeal.

Shah also bagged the wicket of Surya Kumar Yadav in the 15th over, disturbing the furniture, as he was beaten for pace.

Despite Shah having cramped his legs towards the fag end of the innings, he continued to bowl but was punished with a four and a six in the 18th over.

Hardik Pandya’s all-round show

The all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been brilliant in recent times and once again showed why he is the best all-rounder in world cricket.

While he bowled well sticking to the short-pitch strategy, his moment came in the second innings as he ensured an India victory in an edge of the sit ending.

Pandya hit three 4s in the 19th over and put one foot in the victory door, leaving just seven runs to win in the last over. Nawaz, however, ensured that India didn’t walk home easy and got the well-settled Jadeja’s wicket. Pandya, however, was as calm and nonchalant as anyone could be and smacked a maximum over long-on to end the match in India’s favour.

Earlier, he got the important wicket of Mohammed Rizwan (43) after sending back Iftikhar Ahmed (28), both of short-pitched deliveries.

Among other major names missing from the trials are CWG bronze medallists Divya Kakran and Pooja Gehlot owing to injuries and lack of preparations due to various felicitation ceremonies post-Birmingham Games.
While Rio Olympic medallist Sakshi, who competes in 62kg,  confirmed to Firstpost that she won’t be taking part in the trials, Gehlot (50kg) and Anshu (57kg) informed WFI of elbow injuries.
“Among big names, Sakshi and Anshu won’t participate in the trials due to injuries. Also, multiple felicitation ceremonies didn’t allow any of them enough time to prepare for the trials,” said WFI chief coach Jitendra Singh. “Sakshi said she has a back pain while Anshu has an elbow injury. Even Pooja Gehlot has complained of elbow injury while Divya Kakran has also complained of a backache.”
For Anshu the situation is grave as she underwent elbow surgery recently and will stay away from the mat for the next.
“She is on bed rest for the next one and a half months after surgery,” said Anshu’s father Dharamvir. “She will resume light training after that but won’t return to the mat for a month after that. We are aiming to participate in World Cup  (10-11 December in the USA) now.”
Anshu’s absence opens up an opportunity for Sarita Mor, who has switched to the 57kg category from her forte 59kgm where she is ranked world No, 1. However, the 27-year-old wrestler is expected to face a challenge from Sangita Phogat in the trials on Monday. In the 57kg, Sakshi missing out means Sonam will fancy her chances of qualifying for the toughest competition in the calendar year after losing to Sakshi in the CWG trials early in the season.
Vinesh vs Antim, the highlight
However, the focus will be firm on Vinesh Phogat in the 53kg wrestler on the day as after her CWG triumph, the 28-year-old wrestler will arguably face her toughest opponent so far this year in a  17-year-old Antim Panghal.
This is the second time the duo will be at loggerhead as Vinesh survived a scare against the teenager during the CWG trials earlier this year, Vinesh won by the virtue of a bigger point after the scores were locked 3-3. In Vinesh’s defence, this was the first time the grappler was competing since her Tokyo Olympics debacle in 2021.
Since the second round bout in May’s trials, Vinesh completed her hat-trick of gold medals at the CWG while Antim scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman+ to win a gold medal in the U-20 World Championship in the first week of the month.
The women’s chief coach Jitendra, however, is uncertain if the duo will compete in the same category.

“It’s likely that they will compete in the same category but we don’t know yet. It’s a much-awaited clash among the duo but we will get to know only tomorrow if they will compete in the same category or not,” speculated the senior coach.

India vs Pakistan: Virat Kohli shows signs of return to form in 34-ball 35

Returning to competitive cricket after over a month’s break, Virat Kohli contributed 35 runs before being dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz in the 10th over as India took on arch-rivals in an asia Cup 2022 group match in Dubai on Sunday.

Kohli, who had last played in a T20I series against England in July, came in at number three as early as in the first over after KL Rahul was dismissed for a golden duck.

This was Kohli’s 100th T20I for India.

The former India skipper got off to a nervy start, as Kohli was dropped by a diving Fakhar Zaman at second slip in the fourth ball of the first over bowled by Naseem Shah.

However, Kohli went onto build a 49-run stand for the second wicket with Rohit Sharma before the India skipper departed for 12. Kohli showed glimpses of gradually getting back to his old self with some confident strokeplays, as he brought up three fours and a six in his 34-ball knock. However, Kohli’s innings came to an end early in the 10th over, when he came charging down, but miscued a shot to find Iftikhar Ahmed taking a catch at long-off from Mohammad Nawaz’s ball.

This was Kohli’s first 20-plus score in white-ball cricket after four limited-overs innings. Prior to this, Kohli had endured score of 1, 11, 16 and 17 in two T20Is and ODIs respectively against England earlier in the summer.

Kohli’s last T20I fifty had come against West Indies in Kolkata in February this year.

Asia Cup 2022, Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan stat attack: Afghanistan's landmark match, Farooqi's best figures and more

Sri Lanka were outplayed in the opening game of Asia Cup 2022 after they suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Afghanistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Winning the toss and opting to field, Afghanistan restricted the Lankans for 105, bowling them out in 19.4 overs.

Sri Lanka endured a disastrous start after being put into bat, losing three early wickets inside the first two overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka before Naveen-ul-Haq struck in the second over to get rid of Pathum Nissanka. Bhanuka Rajapaksha (38), who forged a 44-run stand with Danushka Gunathilaka for the fourth wicket ended up as Sri Lanka’s top-scorer.

Wickets at regular intervals kept hurting Sri Lanka but it was a 30-run stand for the final wicket between Chamika Karunaratne and Dilshan Madhushanka that helped Sri Lanka surpass 100. Farooqi picked three wickets, Nabi and Mujeeb two wickets a piece and Naveen-ul-haq scalped one as they bundled Sri Lanka for a low total.

In Afghanistan’s reply, Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz forged an 83-run stand for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed for 40. Ibrahim Zadran (15) walked in at number three but he was run-out in the 10th over. However, Zazai (37*) and Najibullah Zadran (2*) sealed the match for the Afghans with eight wickets and 59 balls to spare.

Let’s check out some interesting statistics from the Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan match:

—This was Afghanistan’s first win over Sri Lanka in T20Is. This was just the second meeting between the two sides in T20Is. The last time Afghanistan and Sri Lanka faced each other was at the 2016 T20 World Cup in India, when the Lankans emerged victorious by six wickets after Tilakaratne Dilshan’s unbeaten 83.

—83/0 was Afghanistan’s highest-ever powerplay total. Their previous highest totals in the powerplay are 74/3 against Ireland at Abu Dhabi in 2013 and 68/2 against Scotland in Sharjah in 2013.

—Their total of 105 is Sri Lanka’s 13th lowest total score in T20Is. With this, their lowest-ever total in T20Is remains 82 against India in 2016.

—Their victory in this match with 59 balls to spare was Afghanistan’s second-largest as far as balls remaining are concerned. Afghanistan had beaten Ireland at the same venue in 2017 with 73 balls to spare.

—Fazalhaq Farooqi’s figures of 3/11 in this match was his best in T20Is for Afghanistan. His previous best of 3/18 also came this year, against Bangladesh.

—This was Afghanistan’s landmark 100th T20 international.

Highlights, England vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 3 in Manchester: ENG level series 1-1 with innings victory

Day 2 report: Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes hit centuries on Friday to help England establish a commanding first-innings lead over South Africa after two days of the second test at Old Trafford.

Stokes made 103 for his first century as England full-time test captain, and Foakes weighed in with 113 not out — his highest international knock — as they shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 173.

Foakes was still there when England declared on 415-9, with a first-innings advantage of 264 runs.

South Africa openers Dean Elgar (11) and Sarel Erwee (12) negotiated nine overs before stumps to close on 23 without loss. The Proteas were rolled over for 151 on day one after opting to bat in Manchester.

South Africa leads the three-match series 1-0 after an innings win at Lord’s last week.

Stokes marked the release date of the new documentary about his turbulent career with a timely piece of marketing, hitting his 12th test century, while wicketkeeper Foakes made his second hundred after one on debut in Sri Lanka in 2018.

For much of his first summer in charge, Stokes has been more concerned with making a statement at the crease than a score, driving his team’s ultra-aggressive agenda but selling his wicket cheaply at times.

He struck a more mature balance here, clearing the ropes on three occasions and adding six fours, but also showing durability and diligence to score at a strike-rate of 63.19.

Foakes was even more considered, reaching three figures in 206 deliveries. Between them, the pair got their priorities exactly right, cementing England’s position in the match and laying the foundations for tying the series.

South Africa was four runs in front when Stokes and Foakes came together at 147-5, with Anrich Nortje having taken out the overnight duo of Jonny Bairstow (49) and Zak Crawley (38) in a fiery first spell after the English resumed on 111-3.

Bairstow was first to succumb when he nicked a reverse-swinging delivery to the wicketkeeper before Crawley followed in Nortje’s next over.

The opener won generous praise for grinding out 17 in 77 balls on the first evening but was vulnerable from the outset here. He opened his account with an edge through the cordon and was lucky to see a leading edge land safe before he eventually feathered Nortje behind for 38.

Stokes safely negotiated the remainder of Nortje’s opening burst and rewarded himself by slog-sweeping his first ball from spinner Simon Harmer for six.

A dashed single on 16 left him wincing in pain, his troublesome left knee once again causing discomfort, but a visit from the physio put him right and it was not long before he was punching Lungi Ngidi down the ground for four.

Foakes offered solid support, overturning an lbw decision on 28 before clubbing a no-ball for four just before lunch to take England’s runs for the session past 100.

Nortje was surprisingly held back at the restart in favor of spin at both ends, a decision which played to Foakes’ strengths against slow bowling and allowed Stokes to assert himself again. He reached fifty by smashing Harmer for six on the charge and never looked back. Nortje returned for two further spells but could not recreate his previous menace.

Aiden Markram made a game attempt to pull off a wonder catch when Stokes hammered one in his direction just before tea and the captain reached the break two short of his ton.

Stokes fell six balls after celebrating his century with a familiar gesture in honor of his late father, Ged, whose final days are touchingly captured in the new film. Foakes held up his end to finish unbeaten.

A breakthrough with the ball would have capped a superb day for England, but a hopeful lbw referral from James Anderson was as close as the hosts came before stumps.

England vs South Africa: Ben – Stokes and Foakes – bat England into vast superiority against Proteas

Part of what makes Ben Stokes such a remarkable talent is his ability to grasp a situation, often just as things are looking a little hopeless for his side, and seemingly bend it to his own will. From the latter stages of the World Cup and that innings at Headingley to practically any time England are in the dirt and in desperate need of a wicket, Stokes so often has that special knack of delivering just at the right time.

So it proved once again on Day Two at Old Trafford, England’s skipper notching the 12th Test century of his career and ensuring there would be no wobble from his side as they batted themselves into a position of vast superiority in the match.

Stokes entered the fray inside the first six overs of the day, England four wickets down and still trailing by 17, a more perilous position than you might first assume – given the relative length of England’s tail – after 13 wickets on Day One, the Test was continuing to move at pace.

Anrich Nortje was bowling ferociously, he had seen off Jonny Bairstow to bring in Stokes and removed Zak Crawley in his next over – 90mph plus bowling, swinging through the air and seaming off the pitch – this was cricket with the difficulty turned up to expert level.

But this was the day Amazon released a feature-length documentary about Stokes and with his aforementioned ability to grab a moment, realistically it was only ever going to have one leading man – although Ben Foakes did manage to make a star turn of his own in an exemplary best supporting role.

Since taking over the Test captaincy earlier in the summer, Stokes with the bat has been something of a curious beast. He has treated every innings not as an opportunity to improve his personal statistics but as a chance to show his teammates the sort of freedom he wants them to play with – the first berserker through the breach, the corpse of El Cid strapped to a horse, Stokes has been ideology first, results second with the bat, a living embodiment of the new style he wants his side to adopt.

As policies go, with regard to inspiring and shaping the fortunes of his side it has been a great success – the four consecutive victories England rattled off earlier in the summer were forged in the very image of Stokes – from a personal success point of view it has unsurprisingly been less successful, the inevitable sacrifice of one for the other.

Here though England needed not inspiration but action, so that is what Stokes delivered. If Stokes’ innings this summer have been defined by outlandish strokeplay and a general lack of care for the sanctity of his own wicket, here the situation was largely reversed.

Naturally, there was the odd Stokesian flourish – see Simon Harmer’s first ball to him immediately dumped over the boundary for six – but for the most part this was a lesser seen side of his batting, just nine boundaries in total, the careful application and accumulation that the situation required, the early part of his Headingley innings rather than its explosive crescendo.

Together with Foakes, he batted South Africa into submission, by the time he departed, to about the only really loose shot he played all day, England were 169 runs ahead – they would eventually declare with a lead of 264, yet another day shaped indelibly by Benjamin Andrew Stokes.

Neeraj Chopra wins Lausanne Diamond League with 89.08m throw; qualifies for Zurich Finals and World Championships 2023

Javelin star Neeraj Chopra won the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday as the Tokyo Olympic Champion hurled the javelin 89.08 metre with his first throw of the day. With the victory, Neeraj didn’t just qualify for the Zurich Diamond League finals but also breached the qualification standard of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The 24-year-old Indian qualified for the Worlds 2023 with his very first throw as the qualification mark was set at 85.20m. As far as the Diamond League finals (7-8 September) are concerned, Neeraj remains 4th in the standings with 15 points and booked his spot in the six-man final.

Neeraj’s throw sequence on the day was 89.08m, 85.18m, 0, X, 0, 80.04m.

Czech Republic’s Jakub Valejch threw 85.88m to claim the second spot while USA’s Curtis Thompson hurled 83.72m for the third spot. Both of them will also compete in the Diamond League finals, along with Julian Weber (Germany), Anderson Peters (Grenada) and Leandro Ramos (Portugal).

World Champion Peters is still uncertain for the event as he skipped Lausanne as well afer getting injured during an assault in his homeland.

This was comeback tournament for Neeraj as he missed the Commonwealth Games after sustaining a groin injury during the Oregon World Championships, where he won silver medal with a throw of 88.39m. His season best of 89.70m, also a new national record throw came earlier at the Stockholm Diamond League in July.

England vs South Africa: Proteas on back foot after Dean Elgar’s ruesome decision to bat first

International sportsmen are never big on outwardly regretting decisions, but you suspect Dean Elgar might return to his hotel tonight quietly rueing, even if only to himself, his decision to bat at the toss.

After a welcomingly slack bowling performance by England in the series’ opening Test at Lord’s last week, South Africa decided to reciprocate here with their own act of generosity, inserting themselves under cloudy Manchester skies and letting England’s bowlers have a good go at them.

In truth the South African spirit of generosity began before the toss, the decision to drop Marco Jansen in favour of second spinner Simon Harmer seeming particularly curious, given the former’s performance at Lord’s and the success of the tourists’ seam attack there in general.

South Africa’s decision to play two spinners no doubt influenced their decision to bat first, hoping for an advantage bowling last in the Test. On the evidence of the first day, they have not been a judicious pair of choices.

England’s batters looked a little shell-shocked after their humbling at Lord’s, the Bazball balloon well and truly burst by the pace of Anrich Nortje and the precision of Kagiso Rabada, so they must have been delighted to find themselves in the field at the start of play, pouching catches behind the wicket and watching opposition batsmen forlornly trudge off the pitch instead of themselves.

Reprieved from having to immediately humiliate themselves with the bat, England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs and the side never really looking back from that moment.

Data crunchers CricViz calculated that 44% of the deliveries England bowled in the first eight overs drew a false shot from South Africa, the most at that stage of the innings in any Test so far this summer – and with the recalled Ollie Robinson combining brilliantly, albeit lucklessly, with Anderson, the tourists faced an extremely tricky morning.

In fact, Robinson should have had Elgar excellently caught at short leg by Ollie Pope, but he sloppily overstepped, one of the three no balls he bowled in an otherwise excellent return to the side. Even with Robinson’s efforts largely unrewarded, England still found ways to prosper with the ball, Stuart Broad seemingly not smarting from the decision to take him off new ball duties – picking up the wickets of Elgar and Keegan Petersen coming in as the first change, to reduce South Africa to 40/3 inside the first 15 overs.

A team’s spinner getting the token last over before lunch is a well-worn cricketing trope, although here, South Africa managed to put a new and from their point of view almost certainly unwelcome twist on it, with Simon Harmer finding himself out in the middle with his pads on having to bat the last over of the session.

South Africa were 77/5 at Lunch, and brief Rabada resistance aside largely continued in that vein afterwards, all out for a paltry 151. England’s crumbly top order still found time for a wobble of their own – only serving to reinforce the idea that South Africa choosing to bat first was madness – but by the close, they were 111/3, only 40 behind and returning home forever grateful for Elgar’s decision in the morning.

Watch: Deepak Chahar ‘Mankads’ Zimbabwe opener Innocent Kaia but let him go with a warning in 3rd ODI

Team India pacer Deepak Chahar ‘Mankaded’ Zimbabwe opener, Innocent Kaia, at the non striker’s end but held back the appeal and let the batter go with just a warning during the third ODI in Harare on Monday (August 22).

Zimbabwe, who came out to chase 290-run target, could have lost the wicket on the very first ball of their innings as Chahar ran in and before delivering the ball he removed the bails with Kaia way out of his crease.

However, Chahar refused to appeal for the wicket and let Kaia go with just a warning, thus forcing the umpire to signal a dead ball. Notably, Chahar removed Kaia for 6 in his second over by trapping him in front of stumps.

It is worth mentioning that the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in March of this year made a number of revisions to the existing rules of play and one of the major amendments was moving the running-out of non-striker from ‘Unfair Play’ to Law 38, which concerns ‘Run Out’.

Talking about the match, Sikandar Raza's lion-hearted effort took Zimbabwe on the cusp of a famous victory before India held their nerves to pull off a 13-run win in the third ODI and complete a series sweep.

The final game of the series too was heading India's way until Raza (115 off 95 balls) brought Zimbabwe back into the contest with the support of Brad Evans (28 off 36).

The duo shared a 104-run stand of 77 balls for the eighth wicket to raise hopes of a memorable result against their mighty opponents. However, Raza fell to a brilliant catch by Shubman Gill in the penultimate over, as India scraped through.

It was Gill who had set up the game for India as he smashed his maiden international hundred to take the visitors to 289 for eight. Zimbabwe's innings ended at 276 in 49.3 overs.

India vs Zimbabwe 3rd ODI: Shubman Gill dedicates ‘special’ ton to his dad, KL Rahul says he is ‘tired’

His heart was racing when he moved to the 90s and the fear of losing out on getting that elusive hundred did grip his mind but Shubhman Gill was determined to make it count this time, especially after getting a bit of ''schooling'' from his father.

The 22-year-old, who made his International debut in an ODI in 2019, scored 130 off 97 balls as India posted 289 for eight against Zimbabwe and completed a 3-0 clean sweep of the hosts with a 13-run win.

''My heart was beating when I got into the 90s. I had got out in the 90s thrice before and never got a hundred in International cricket. It's always special to get a hundred,'' Gill said at the presentation ceremony.

Gill also topped the run chart in the series with 245 runs at an average of 122.50 to be adjudged both the man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series.

''My father has been my primary coach. I got a bit of schooling the day before yesterday when I was out 33. So this one is for my dad.''

Gill further said he would save the bat.

''The bat was pretty good and that's why I changed it after my fifty as I wanted to save it,'' he added.

Asked whether he was targetting any particular bowler, he said: ''(Sikandar) Raza, (Brad) Evans were bowling well and it was crucial to target the (other) bowlers.'' ''I was just trying to minimise my dot-ball percentage. I just tried to time the ball and not hit it hard,'' he said about his knock.

KL Rahul asserts that he is "tired of coming back after a couple of months"

After winning the first series as a captain, KL Rahul said, “Fielded about 120 overs, got some time out in the middle with the bat. I am tired of coming back after a couple of months. But this is what we all want to do, playing for India."

"Feels good, we came here with good ideas. We wanted to be out in the middle and use this time. They have been very professional, very happy with the result. They took the game deep, we would have liked to finish the game earlier. The bowers were tested and they held their nerves."

Notably, it was also a comeback series for Rahul who underwent a sports hernia surgery post-IPL where he led debutants Lucknow Super Giants to a last-four finish.

Meanwhile, Rahul also praised Gill and said, ''I've not seen him over-confident and that requires composure. To show that kind of temperament despite not having played a lot of Internationals is really good. He has batted well throughout the series and did well in the West Indies and the IPL.”

“It's pleasing to the eye when he bats and good to see him use his form and score runs,'' he added.

India vs Zimbabwe 3rd ODI stat attack: Shubman Gill breaks Tendulkar, Rohit’s records, India’s most series whitewashes

Sikandar Raza's lion-hearted effort took Zimbabwe on the cusp of a famous victory before India held their nerves to pull off a 13-run win in the third ODI and complete a series sweep at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

The nerve-racking match also witnessed some records being made or broken and we take a look at them in our stat attack:

  • Shubman Gill registered his maiden international hundred as he smashed 130 runs in just 97 balls with 15 fours and one six.
  • Gill also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record as his 130 is also the highest individual score by an Indian against Zimbabwe in ODIs. The previous highest score in ODIs against Zimbabwe by an Indian was by Tendulkar, who scored 127* in 1998 in the first ODI of three-match series.
  • Shubham Gill has also broken captain Rohit Sharma's record by becoming India's youngest player to hit a century in international cricket on Zimbabwean soil. Gill achieved the feat at the age of 22 years and 348 days, while Rohit had slammed the century against Zimbabwe aged 23 years and 28 days.
  • With the win in the 3rd ODI, India created the record for most ODI series whitewashes in 2022 with 3 clean sweeps. India had earlier completed two ODI series whitewashes against West Indies.
  • Deepak Hooda has now won all his 17 international matches (ODI and T20I combined) to extend the longest winning streak for a player in men's international cricket since debut.
  • Zimbabwe crossed the 200-run mark for the first time against India in the last six ODIs while failing to play the full quota of 50 overs. Their totals in the last five ODIs are 168 (49.5 overs), 126 (34.3 overs), 123 (42.2 overs), 189 (40.3 overs), 161 (38.1 overs), 276 (49.3).

Dhanashree condemns ‘hateful, hurtful’ rumours around her relationship with Yuzvendra Chahal, leg-spinner responds

Amid the rumours around the rift between Indian leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife Dhanashree Verma, the latter broke her silence and shared an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday.

The rumours had emerged after Dhanashree reportedly removed ‘Chahal’ from her Instagram profile and the leg spinner as well put up a story with the words, “starting a new life.”

Dhanashree shared a long message on her Instagram account and also said that she has been suffering from an ACL ligament injury and was unable to make any significant movement and was under stringent rest.

“I had completely lost confidence due to my knee injury that happened while dancing (my last reel) & I landed up tearing my ACL ligament. I have been resting at home & the only movement I have had is from my bed to my couch (along with physiotherapy & rehab every day). But what has also got me through this is the support of my near & dear ones including my husband, my family, and my closest friends,” Dhanashree wrote.

The choreographer added that hearing and seeing social media posts about a rift between her and Chahal were ‘hateful’ and ‘hurtful’. Social media as usual had gone into a frenzy and started making memes and jokes around the issue.

“I was trying really hard to wrap my head around this shocking news of not being able to do the basic things in life adequately. This is when I needed the most support, and this is exactly the time when people picked up some random news about us! It was pretty hateful, hence hurtful, for me to hear all of that. It was draining, to say the least.”

Chahal responded “My Woman” with a few emoticons in the comments and won the hearts of their fans.

Earlier, Chahal had also shared a message on his Instagram story asking the fans to not believe in the divorce rumours that were spreading like wildfire.

Dhanashree said that she feels better now and has also learnt from this experience making her stronger than earlier. She concluded with the initials of DVC, wherein C would stand for Chahal.
