India vs England: Rohit Sharma returns to lead Men in Blue as BCCI announces ODI, T20I squads

The BCCI announced India’s squads for the limited-overs leg against England on Thursday evening. Captain Rohit Sharma will return to action after missing out on the fifth Test match.

The squad for the first T20I will be the same that played the two T20Is against Ireland except for the addition of Rohit Sharma. For the second and third T20Is, the likes of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah will return. The senior players will be rested for the first T20I as it will be played immediately after a day’s break from the Test match.

Rohit Sharma who was earlier ruled out of the Test match as he continued to test positive for Covid-19 will lead the team from the first T20I. The BCCI, however, has strangely not announced his deputy for the white-ball games.

The ODI squad will also see the return of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, whose ouster from the shortest format has raised many questions. Besides Dhawan, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj will also return to the shorter formats.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been left out of the white-ball format. Another notable absentee from the squads is wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. All-rounders Washington Sundar and Shahrukh Khan who were a part of the squad against West Indies will also miss the flight. Sundar has signed a deal with county team Lancashire once he recovers from his injury.

The BCCI press release stated, “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the squads for the three-match T20I and ODI series against England to be played after the fifth Test.”

Neeraj Chopra sets new national record with 89.94m throw at Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra registered a new personal best and shattered his own national record in javelin throw at the Diamond League League in Stockholm. With a throw of 89.94 metres in his first attempt, Chopra went past his previous best of 89.30m achieved two weeks ago at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

After a start of 89.94 metres, Chopra's next attempts were: 84.37m, 87.46m, 84.77m and 86.67m.

Chopra's joy of leading the pack was short-lived as 2019 World Champion Anderson Peters of Granada threw the javelin 90.31 metre in his third attempt. Peters holds the world record of 93.07 metres which was set earlier this year in Doha.

By virtue of finishing in the top-3 - alongside Peters and Julian Weber - the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist qualified to throw a sixth attempt in the final round. Germany's Weber threw 89.08 metres in his fifth attempt.

In the sixth and final attempt, Peters started with a throw of 87.36m followed by Chopra's 86.84m and Weber's 80.0m.

By virtue of finishing second in Stockholm, Chopra earns himself seven points towards the Grand Final in Zurich.

This was Neeraj’s first Diamond League meet in almost four years.

India vs Ireland: Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson's carnage at Malahide leaves Cricket Twitter in awe

Deepak Hooda produced a master-class knock, becoming only the fourth Indian to hit a T20 International century, as the visiting side posted a mammoth 225 for 7 against Ireland in the second and final match in Malahide on Tuesday.

During his maiden T20I ton (104 off 57 balls), Hooda showed he belonged to the big stage with his scintillating stroke play, both off the front and the backfoot.

While Hooda was elegant and at ease on the frontfoot, he was equally good on the backfoot, dispatching the ball over the midwicket boundary for a few sixes.

Hooda decorated his knock with nine 4s and six hits over the fence. He was ably supported by Sanju Samson, who, opening the batting in place of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, played second fiddle but grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

Samson made 77 off 42 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes.

Both Hooda and Samson's strokeplay down the ground were a treat for the eyes.

But India did not have the best of starts as they lost Ishan Kishan (3) early in the third over. The left-handed opener wasted an opportunity, nicking a Mark Adair delivery to Lorcan Tucker behind the stumps in the third over.

Hooda and Samson joined hands and the duo batted effortlessly, albeit handing two difficult chances, to share 176 runs off just 85 balls to lay the foundation for India's huge total.

It was a one-way traffic after Kishan's dimissal as Hooda and Samson toyed with the Irish bowlers and did not let them settle down.

Except for a difficult chance that Paul Stirling dropped at extra-cover in the eighth over, Hooda played a perfect knock.

India vs Ireland: Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson record partnership, propel visitors to massive total

Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson broke the record for India's highest partnership in T20Is to help the visitors post a commanding 225/7 against Ireland at Malahide on Tuesday.

The partnership also broke the record of the highest second-wicket partnership in all T20Is.

Samson scored 67 of 34 balls, while Hooda contributed 98 of just 53 deliveries to the second-wicket partnership. The two put up a partnership of 176 runs in just 87 deliveries at a strike rate of more than 200.

India lost Ishan Kishan at the start of the third over with just 13 on board. However, the duo of Hooda and Samson took off from there and never looked back.

In the process, they broke the record for the highest second-wicket partnership in all T20Is, breaking the previous best — an unbroken 167 between Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan against South Africa in Cape Town in 2020.

The partnership was also the highest for India for any wicket in T20Is, surpassing the previous best of 165 between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The earlier record was for the first wicket against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017.

Samson started on a comparatively slower note and played a second fiddle to Hooda. Hooda who continued from where he left off in the first match on Sunday, punished the bowlers to all the parts of the ground.

Hooda pulled the short-pitched deliveries, played lofted drives to good-length of half volley deliveries, and cut or sliced anything bowled on the off-stump.

Samson soon joined Hooda in the boundary riot and hit nine 4s and four 6s in his innings of 77.

Hooda also scored his maiden international century after Samson got out. He hit nine 4s and six 6s in his innings of 104. Hooda also became only the fourth Indian batter to score a century in T20Is after Suresh Raina, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma.

India finished their innings at 225 for the loss of seven wickets as the middle order collapsed in the last three overs. However, the second-wicket partnership made sure that India had their fourth-highest total in T20Is.

India vs Ireland: Deepak Hooda lights up Malahide with 55-ball century in 2nd T20I, joins exclusive club

Deepak Hooda joined an exclusive club on Tuesday as he became only the fourth Indian to score a century in Twenty20 Internationals.

Hooda achieved the milestone during the second and final T20I against Ireland at The Village in Malahide on the outskirts of national capital Dublin, reaching the three-figure mark in just 55 deliveries in what was a knock of the highest quality. The knock also happens to be his first international ton, surpassing his personal best of 47*, that he had achieved just two days back against the same opposition.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) all-rounder, promoted to open in the series opener on Sunday, but coming in at one-down in this game, smashed nine 4s and six 6s during his stay at the crease. He reached the milestone with a single off Josh Little at the start of the 18th over, though he would get dismissed in the final delivery of the same over, getting caught by Andy McBrine.

He was ably assisted by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad as Ishan Kishan's opening partner and made the most of the opportunity with a blazing 77 off 42 balls. The pair stitched a record 176-run stand for the second wicket and helped the Men in Blue recover from Kishan's early dismissal with just 13 on the board.

Hooda's knock ensured India went past the 200-run mark rather comfortably and even though they lost wickets in a heap in the slog overs, they still ended up with a formidable 225/7 — their fourth-highest total in the format.

India's regular skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and former batter Suresh Raina are the only other Indians to have scored a ton in the format, with Raina the first to achieve the feat with his 101 against South Africa in the 2010 ICC World T20.

Rohit, meanwhile, has achieved the milestone four times, including his 118 against Sri Lanka in 2017 that is the highest individual score by an Indian in the format. Rahul, meanwhile, has two tons in the format — 110 not out and 101 not out against West Indies and England respectively.

Highlights, England vs New Zealand, 3rd Test Day 4 in Headingley: Hosts in driver's seat in chase of 296

Day 3 report: England strangled New Zealand's top order through pace and spin in the second innings to stay in the ascendency three days into the third test at Headingley on Saturday.

New Zealand was 168-5 for an overall lead of 137 runs when rain brought an early closure with 17.1 overs remaining in the day.

Jamie Overton missed out on a dream hundred in his debut test but Jonny Bairstow’s masterful 162 gave England a slender first-innings lead of 31 runs when it was all out for 360 just before lunch.

Tom Latham (76) and captain Kane Williamson (48) raised New Zealand hopes of setting a big target in the last test of a compelling series until England hit back with four wickets in the last session -- claiming the last three for only nine runs.

That left New Zealand's best batters in the series, Tom Blundell on 5 and Daryl Mitchell on 4, at the crease.

Latham and Williamson batted solidly against pace and dominated the spin of Jack Leach before Stuart Broad induced a healthy outside edge of Latham’s bat which Joe Root couldn’t hold at first slip late in the second session.

There was virtually no lateral movement for the fast bowlers and Latham was quick to punish anything pitched in the slot. Both batters also played some impressive sweep shots and combined in hitting 18 fours.

Latham and Williamson nearly played out the entire middle session and took their team to a comfortable 125-1 at tea. Then fast bowler Jamie Overton struck off the first ball after the tea break.

Earlier, England’s lower order continued to prosper after it resumed from 264-6 overnight.

Jonny Bairstow made 162 and Overton 97, and their record seventh-wicket stand of 241 lifted England from a precarious 55-6 to 360 all out before the hosts were bowled out before lunch.

Overton was overcautious against the pace after resuming on 89, and drove Trent Boult for his first boundary of the day and 13th overall.

Bairstow, 130 overnight, raised England’s second fastest 150 in a test off 144 balls when he drove Neil Wagner through the covers for two runs.

Boult, who sliced through England’s top order on Friday, finally broke the stand when Overton edged a low catch to the slips after the left-arm fast bowler changed the line by coming round the wicket. Overton’s brilliant counterattack came off 136 balls and featured 13 fours and two sixes.

Boult finished with 4-104.

Broad played a superb cameo of 42 off 36 balls that included sixes against Boult and Wagner. Tim Southee (3-100) clean bowled the left-hander.

Bairstow’s second successive blistering knock of the series finally ended when he came down the wicket against the spin of Michael Bracewell and Boult took a smart catch at long off. Bairstow received a thunderous applause from England supporters on his home ground.

Bairstow’s blistering knock off 157 balls featured 24 fours, and rescued England hopes of sweeping the series against the world test champion.

Live Score, West Indies vs Bangladesh 2nd Test update

Day 2 report: West Indies started the day 167 runs behind Bangladesh and finished it 106 runs ahead in the second test at Daren Sammy Stadium on Saturday.

Allrounder Kyle Mayers led the turnaround with a chanceless and unbeaten 126 runs, easily the highest score by either side after two days.

In reply to Bangladesh's sub-par 234, West Indies moved from 67 without loss overnight to 340-5 at stumps.

Winner of the first test in Antigua in just over three days, West Indies was well on course to clinch the short series.

After captain Kraigg Brathwaite scored 51 and contributed a century opening stand with John Campbell, Mayers stopped a mini-collapse with Jermaine Blackwood, and cruised on with Joshua Da Silva.

Da Silva was 26 not out after facing 106 balls.

Brathwaite and Campbell, from a shared 67 overnight, reached 100 together in the first hour, including a seven-ball over by Shoriful Islam.

But Shoriful ended the partnership when he nicked Campbell's glove and dismissed him for 45.

Brathwaite brought up his 27th test fifty from 105 balls, but added only one more run when he missed offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and was bowled.

In the next over, Khaled Ahmed got Raymon Reifer and Nkrumah Bonner to play on to their stumps.

Three wickets in two overs energized Bangladesh and sent a shiver through West Indies, but Mayers and Blackwood conceded nothing else before and after lunch.

Blackwood played an anchor role, and Mayers gradually opened up to reach his fifty off 75 balls.

Their partnership was worth 116 just after tea when Blackwood misread Mehidy and was out leg before on 40 from 121 balls.

Mayers turned cautious again, but even after Bangladesh took the new ball, the batter switched to fearless when another milestone was in sight.

Mayers was in and out of the 90s in the space of six balls, bringing up his century with a six by pulling Shoriful into the stands over square leg.

His second century in his 13th test came from 150 balls.

By stumps he was on 126 after 180 balls, a large proportion driven through the covers, with more great support from wicketkeeper Da Silva. Their stand was on 92 from 33 overs.

Highlights, England vs New Zealand, 3rd Test Day 1: Black Caps 225/5 at stumps

England vs New Zealand 3rd Test: England head into the third Test at Headingley with doubts over the health of captain Ben Stokes as they chase a 3-0 series clean sweep against New Zealand.

Stokes missed training on Tuesday through illness, with a team spokesman saying the all-rounder tested negative for the coronavirus and was being kept away from the squad as a precautionary measure.

New Zealand have had several positive cases in their squad during the tour, with Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson ruled out of the second Test.

As well as Williamson, the tourists have also seen Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell and two members of their backroom team return positive results in England.

All four players are fit and available to play in Leeds this week.

With England having already won the New Zealand series, the hosts have made one injury enforced change. James Anderson is sitting out with Jamie Overton coming in to make his England debut.

England face a re-arranged finale to last year's Covid-postponed Test series against India, starting at Edgbaston on 1 July.

Coming into this campaign against the world Test champions, England had won just one of their previous 17 matches at this level.

Yet they have made a fine start to life under their new leadership duo of Stokes and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, making good on the former New Zealand captain's aim of playing more positive cricket.

England's Jonny Bairstow is sure to receive a hero's reception on his Yorkshire home ground following his stunning 136 at Trent Bridge that turned a seeming difficult pursuit of 299 into a victory target they achieved with remarkable ease.

Watch: Virat Kohli tries to balance his bat like Joe Root; video goes viral

India batter and former captain Virat Kohli, in his yet another on-field antics, tried to make his bat stand on its toe end similar to what Joe Root did in the second Test match against New Zealand.

The batter was on the non-striker’s end when he tried to stand his bat first on his right side and then on his left side but the bat leaned towards him on both occasions. The video however went viral on social media.

Joe Root made his bat stand in the first Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s. The video of his antic immediately went viral and he was hailed as a magician and a sorcerer. Kohli tried to replicate the magic of his English counterpart but failed to do so. Root with a century in the second Test match, equalled Kohli’s tally of 27 centuries.

India are playing a four-day practice match against the English division 2 county team Leicestershire before the rescheduled Test match against England.

Kohli looked in good touch with the bat before he got out leg-before-wicket to Roman Walker. He hit four 4s and a six in his 69-ball 33 and played some trademark cover drives to the delight of his fans.

Rain forced day one of the match to end early as India managed to score 246 for the loss of eight wickets in 60 overs.  Kohli and Bharat steadied the ship after India had lost five wickets inside 100 runs. However, KS Bharat was the highest scorer at 70* and will resume batting tomorrow alongside Mohammed Shami.

Jasprit Bumrah, Cheteshwar Pujara, Prasidh Krishna, and Rishabh Pant are playing for the Leicestershire team. While Krishna managed to bag one wicket, Bumrah went wicketless in his spell of nine overs.

India finally clinched a win against South Africa in the five-match series after beating the visitors by 48 runs in Visakhapatnam. The home side scored 179/5 in 20 overs after batting first and then bundled out South Africa for 131 to clinch the win.

India stand-in captain Rishabh Pant hailed the bowlers for their efforts.

"The execution was spot-on from the bowlers and the batters. We were 15 runs short, but we weren't thinking about that. Bowlers did a fantastic job for us. In India, spinners play a big role and there is pressure on them, when they come off nicely then matches like this happen. When you get a good start, it's difficult for a new batter to come in and go big straightaway. We lost too many wickets. We'll look to improve in the next match. We have to make sure that we finish the game with a bigger margin," he said.

Yuzvendra Chahal was back in form for India after he returned with a three-fer while Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged four wickets. Earlier, openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad chipped in with individual fifties.

India are still alive in the series after this win but trail 1-2.

Neeraj rewrites national record to 89.30m; clinches silver in Finland

Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra improved his national record to 89.30m to clinch the silver medal at Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku (Finland) on Tuesday.

Gold medal was clinched by an unlikely contender in Oliver Helander, who threw 89.83m in his second attempt in front of home crowd.

Neeraj hurled his throw in his second attempt as well to improve his previous national record of 88.07m at Indian Grand Prix 3 in Patiala last year. His six-round sequence on Tuesday were 86.92m, 89.30, X, X, X, 85.85.

This was also the third time in a row that the track and field star has thrown big in his first competition of the year. In January 2020, Neeraj threw 87.86m in Potchefstroom (South Africa) to qualify for the Olympics. 2021 saw him throw his new national record of 88.07m in Patiala last March.

Day 3 report: Joe Root and Ollie Pope made centuries Sunday to help England move to 473-5 and within sight of New Zealand's vast first-innings total of 553 on Day 3 of a second Test that has turned into a batter's paradise at Trent Bridge.

Root, currently the world's most in-form batter in Test cricket, was still there at stumps on 163 not out to give England hope of coming out of the first innings with an unlikely lead.

While Root is used to compiling centuries — this was his fourth in his last five Test matches and the 27th of his career — Pope reached three figures for just the second time in four years in the England team and the first at home.

Pope's 145 beat his previous best score, the 135 not out against South Africa in January 2020, and justified the decision of England's new leadership to promote him to No. 3 for this international summer.

Alex Lees (67) and Ben Stokes (46) chipped in with significant knocks and Ben Foakes was with Root on 24 not out at the close, with England trailing by 80.

England leads the three-match series 1-0 after a five-wicket win in the first test at Lord’s last week.

Backing that up with a win in Nottingham looked beyond the hosts when Daryl Mitchell's 190 led the New Zealanders to their biggest test score in England, but all results are now possible with two days remaining.

England motored along at a fierce rate, scoring 383 in 88 overs, with Root making his quickest century so far — in 116 balls.

A sixth double hundred looks on for Root after the latest impeccable knock from a player in the form of his life. It was his second century in as many tests since giving up the captaincy, his fifth in his last nine innings on home soil, and his 10th since the start of 2021.

He now sits level with contemporaries Steve Smith and Virat Kohli on 27 centuries and there is a growing feeling that he could be the one to leave the pack behind.

“We’re witnessing something special," former England captain Michael Vaughan told the BBC. “I’ve known Joe for years and I really do believe he’s England’s greatest player.”

England had started the day on 90-1, and Lees set the tone from the third ball of the morning, pounding Tim Southee (0-119) through cover point for four. The left-hander was good value for his first England fifty, opening up the off side well to draw the seamers back into his pads. Lees had also left the ball well but his judgment momentarily wavered when he wafted at Matt Henry's wide delivery and was caught behind.

Pope started less assertively, twice nicking Trent Boult (3-89) in front of the slips in a morning session that saw him add a gentle 33 in two hours as Lees, then Root, took the driving seat.

Pope stepped things up a notch after lunch, taking just 10 balls to move from 84 to his long-awaited hundred. A set of four overthrows helped but there were also three boundaries clean off the middle of the bat as he found his timing.

Pope made his only other century 34 innings and 2 1/2 years ago in Port Elizabeth, and his ecstatic celebrations told their own story. Root sprinted 40 meters to join in.

England scored 136 in a wicketless afternoon session, Pope adding an uppercut six off Henry to a repertoire of flashy cross-bat strokes.

Improbably, the tempo picked up again after tea. Boult struck twice with the second new ball, Pope top-edging a pull to end a memorable stay and Jonny Bairstow caught behind off one that grazed the glove.

England was still more than 200 adrift when Stokes stepped out, but he started in fifth gear and never retreated. He flayed 46 in 33 balls, with two sixes and six fours in a furious onslaught which was too fast for some observers. His exuberance proved his undoing, holing out off his third ball from spinner Michael Bracewell, who claimed his first test wicket on debut.

Root moved serenely past the 150 mark, taking the deficit into double figures at the same time, with Ben Foakes supporting well after Will Young’s fumble reprieved him on nine.

Yuzvendra Chahal's poor form with the ball continued as the 30-year-old wrist-spinner leaked 49 runs in India's four-wicket loss against South Africa in the second T20I at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.

India’s first football meeting with Afghanistan dates back to 1950, when India emerged victorious with a 3-0 scoreline at the Asian Games semi-final in Delhi.

India vs South Africa: 'Vintage Proteas', Twitter reacts to visitors' commanding seven-wicket win in 1st T20I

David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen hit fiery half-centuries to guide South Africa to a seven-wicket win over India in the first T20 International of the five-match series here on Thursday.

Chasing a mammoth 212, Miller (64 not out) and Van der Dussen (75 not out)shared an unbeaten 131-run stand for the fourth wicket to take the visitors home with consummate ease.

For India, Axar Patel (1/40), Bhuveneshwar Kumar (1/43) and Harshal Patel (1/43) scalped one wicket apiece.

Earliers, Ishan Kishan smashed 76 off 48 balls to power India to 211 for four against South Africa in the first T20 International here on Thursday.

Shreyas Iyer (36), skipper Rishabh Pant (29) and his deputy Hardik Pandya (31 not out) also made useful contributions to the Indian innings.
