Meanwhile, Sindhu overcame home favourite Akane Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20 in the quarter-finals, and she will face Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in her last-four clash. It will take place at 3.20 pm IST. Tai Tzu Ying had beaten Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon in the other quarter-final.

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Big-game hunter PV Sindhu starting to come into her own
It’s starting to happen again. That PV Sindhu-shaped juggernaut is starting to gather pace, smashing and slashing past opponents. Just in time for a title run at a marquee tournament too.
Friday brought the first big test of Sindhu’s campaign in Tokyo. Her group stage opponents are both ranked outside the top 30 and had never beaten Sindhu in BWF events. Israel's World No 58 Ksenia Polikarpova was dispatched in 28 minutes. Hong Kong's Ngan Yi Cheung, the World No 34, lasted 35 minutes.
Mia Blichfeldt, the World No 12, met her in the last-16 round. She too was shown the exit door without the complication of a three-game encounter.
Akane Yamaguchi, though, was expected to be a different test of character for Sindhu.
The Japanese shuttler, ranked No 5 in the world, has made a name for herself on the circuit by being a relentless retriever, so zealously dedicated to the cause that she doesn’t think twice before flinging herself across the court to return a shot. But, in the end on Friday, the breathtaking brutality of Sindhu’s racquet was too much for her to handle. After 56 minutes of punch-drunk badminton—the rigours of which, at one point, saw Sindhu dropping to her knees while across the net from her, Yamaguchi was doubled over, hands on knees—the Indian entered the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics.
There were down-the-line smashes from Sindhu ferocious enough to be termed assassination attempts. There were defensive blocks with just enough weight in them to waft across the net. There were cross-court drives.
And then there were the rallies.
The first big rally of the match came in the first game with Sindhu trailing 5-6. To draw level, Sindhu made her Japanese opponent run to every corner of the court. And then some more. At the end of the 26-stroke rally, which lasted for 33 seconds, Sindhu finally clawed back into the game. From that point on, Sindhu put daylight between the two of them, eventually winning 21-13.
Another critical point of the match came in the second game and involved 54 shots, a rally which continued for 62 seconds. It allowed Sindhu to take a 15-14 lead. She broke a gut in her racquet in the next point trying to smash the daylights out of the shuttle.
“I really wanted to get that point. Neither of us relaxed and gave up. It was a crucial point,” she told journalists later in the mixed zone of Tokyo’s Musashino Forest Sport Plaza. “I came ready to play long rallies. It was not a one-dimensional strategy that I came into the game with. It was important that I maintain my attack, cause that’s my strong point.”
Nothing Yamaguchi was trying was working, at least consistently. She first went after the Indian’s backhand by using long lobs. Didn’t work. She also tried attacking Sindhu’s body.
Sindhu’s coach, Park Tae-sang, had been telling journalists in the build-up to the Olympics that they were working on fortifying her defence, motion skills and net training. The shuttler has also spoken about learning new skills and shots.
“You will see some new skill at the Tokyo Olympics from me,” she teased. “I worked on every stroke. We got really good time due to this pandemic. I utilised this period very well.”
With the score at 14-8 in the second game, Sindhu leapt up and caressed the shuttle across the net while her Japanese opponent waited for a full-blooded smash. It did not arrive. Instead, the shuttle gently flew over the net and fell into Yamaguchi’s side of the court. The Japanese shuttler did not see it coming.
Moments later, Yamaguchi was standing on the cusp of forcing a decider. She was leading 20-18 in the second. But Sindhu clawed back, levelling at 20-20, and then sealing the deal at 22-20.
"Today's second game was crucial for me. Even when she was leading I didn't lose hope or was that nervous because I understood that if I was leading 14-8 at one point and then let slip that advantage to let her get to 20-18. The learning from this game was that even though you are leading don't expect that it will finish easily,” she said.
Pre-Olympics slump
In the months coming to Tokyo, the Swiss Open was the only one where Sindhu made it to the final. There were a handful of quarters and semis appearances.
Sindhu’s slump coming into an Olympic Games or big-ticket events is not a new.
Going into Rio 2016, Sindhu won just the Macau Open in the BWF’s calendar of events in 2015. She started 2016 by winning the Malaysia Masters GP Gold. But then she had a string of quarter-final and semi-final defeats leading up to Rio 2016. In the last tournament before Rio, in June 2016, she lost in straight games to South Korea’s Kim Hyo Min at the Australian Badminton Open. (Saina Nehwal won that event while Srikanth was a semi-finalist).
This is possibly why, as chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand once told Firstpost, everyone at Rio 2016 was prepared for the Saina Nehwal test, but Sindhu came as an “out-of-syllabus” question.
Even in 2018, when Sindhu won the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals (where she bulldozed through the field, beating Yamaguchi, Tai Tzu Ying, Beiwen Zhang, Ratchanok Intanon and Nomozi Okuhara), she had come on the back of a title-less three-month stretch, where she had not made it to the semis.
That stretch had started after she had conquered silver at the Asian Games right after another silver at the World Championships.
“At the last Olympics, nobody cared about Sindhu. This time around, it’s going to be a challenge. She’s going to be the main question in the test! People are going to be prepared for her,” Gopichand had foretold in November 2019 in an interview with Firstpost.

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Shuttler PV Sindhu's road to women's singles semi-finals in second Olympic appearance
PV Sindhu is on course for a second consecutive Olympic medal after fighting her way into the semi-finals of the women’s singles event by defeating local hope Akane Yamaguchi in straight games.
Sindhu, who settled for silver after losing to Carolina Marin in the gold medal match in Rio five years ago and has since won the World Championships among her many accomplishments, next faces Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-ying, against whom she has a 5-13 head-to-head record.
Tzu-ying qualified for the last four on the back of a come-from-behind win against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon on the same day as Sindhu’s win over Yamaguchi. The Hyderabadi shuttler, on the other hand, registered a 21-13, 22-20 scoreline to advance.
Sindhu faces Tzu-ying in Court 1 at the Musashino Forest Plaza in the Japanese capital on Saturday, 31 July, the match starting at 3.20 pm Indian Standard Time.
A week later, Yamaguchi again beat Sindhu, this time in the quarters, at the Japan Open.
Here's her road to the Tokyo Olympics women's singles semi-finals:
Coming into July 2019, PV Sindhu had not made it to the final of a World Tour event in the calendar year. That changed when the Indian strode into the Indonesia Open final by brushing aside the likes of Nozomi Okuhara and Chen Yu Fei in straight-game victories. The run to the final was a mixed-bag for Sindhu, who was taken the distance by unheralded Aya Ohori and Mia Blichfeldt, but blitzed the more established Okuhara and Chen in matches where she won games by 21-7 and 21-0 margins respectively.
But in the final, Sindhu ran head first into her third Japanese contender of the tournament, the redoubtable Akane Yamaguchi, who handed her a 15-21, 16-21 defeat.
A World Championship gold, at last!
Exactly a month after that disappointing Japan Open defeat, Sindhu was standing atop the podium at Basel with the World Championship crown perched on her head. Sindhu had previously won four World Championships medals — bronze medals in the 2013 and 2014 editions and silver in 2017 and 2018 — but the lustre of a Worlds gold medal was missing from Sindhu’s trophy cabinet. In 2017, Nozomi Okuhara had handed Sindhu a bruising defeat after a 110-minute encounter at Glasgow. Two years later in Basel, Sindhu returned the favour with a 38-minute demolition of the Japanese shuttler with a 21-7, 21-7 scoreline. Not just the final, Sindhu was impressive throughout the week, dominating Pai Yu Po, Beiwen Zhang, Tai Tzu Ying, Chen Yu Fei on her way to the final.
Reality check for the World Champion
The succeeding tournaments after that heady title at Basel were a reality check for the Indian though. She lost in the second round at the China Open to Pornpawee Chochuwong, first round at the Korea Open to Zhang, second round at the Denmark Open to An Se Young, quarter-finals of the French Open to Tai Tzu Ying, first round of the Fuzhou China Open to Pai Yu Po, second round of the Hong Kong Open to Busanan Ongbamrungphan.
She made the cut for the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals, but crashed out in the group stage after winning just one of her three round robin matches. Her win over China’s He Bing Jiao was merely a consolation, since she had lost her previous two clashes, against Chen Yu Fei and Akane Yamaguchi.
2020 brings more misery
In a year curtailed heavily due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced many tournaments to be cancelled, Sindhu participated at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 and the Indonesia Masters Super 500 in January, and then at the prestigious All-England tournament in March.
At the Malaysia Masters, she beat Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya in her opener and then Japan’s Aya Ohori in the next round in straight games. But she was ousted by the wily Tai Tzu Ying in a 36-minute encounter in the quarters.
A week later, at the Indonesia Masters, she started shakily, allowing Japan’s Aya Ohori to take a game off her in their opening clash. In the second round, she won the first game, but then allowed Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi to come back strongly and claim the rest of the two games and the match.
At the All England event in March, she breezed through the first two matches of the tournament, beating Beiwen Zhang and Sung Ji Hyun in straight games. But Nozomi Okuhara stopped the Indian shuttler’s march in the quarters after a three-game scrap.
Move to England
PV Sindhu moved to England to train at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) in October 2020 while the pandemic raged in India.
There were multiple news reports at the time speculating about the reasons behind her move to England, including a falling out with her parents. But the shuttler moved fast to quash the reports.
Sindhu’s father told the Press Trust of India, “Her practice was not happening properly here. After the 2018 Asian Games, Gopi (chief coach Pullela Gopichand) didn’t take interest in her training. He didn’t provide a proper practice partner to train with her. She was not having enough quality practice and was fed up with the treatment.”
Miserable run of results
Sindhu started 2021 with a miserable run of form. In the Yonex Thailand Open, a Super 100 tournament, she was dumped out by Mia Blichfeldt in the opening round. After claimed the first game, but after losing a scrappy game 24-26, she lost the plot in the decider, losing 13-21.
A week later, at the Toyota Thailand Open, she made it to the quarter-finals, by beating Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Selvadurey Kisona in the first two encounters. But she was brushed aside in the quarters by Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon by a 13-21, 9-21 margin.
More misery awaited her at the rescheduled World Tour Finals event later in January, where she was beaten by Tai Tzu Ying and Ratchanok Intanon in successive games, before beating Pornpawee Chochuwong in the last game of the group stage.
Finalist at Swiss Open
In March, Sindhu rampaged her way into the final of the World Tour Super 300 event in Switzerland without dropping a game in four contests.
But in the final, she was reunited with her old foe: Carolina Marin, who had defeated her in the Rio Olympics final. This time too, the Spaniard emerged victorious handing Sindhu a defeat by a shocking 12-21, 5-21 margin.
Falling short at All England
10 days after the final defeat, Sindhu started her campaign at the All England tournament. She made it to the quarters, without really being tested. In the last-8 round, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi troubled Sindhu, taking a game off her. But while Sindhu managed to ride out that storm, she was ousted in the next round by a determined Pornpawee Chochuwong by a 17-21, 9-21 scoreline.
Training at Gachibowli
With the last remaining tournaments before Tokyo 2020 cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19, Sindhu returned to India to train. She made the Gachibowli Stadium in Telangana her training base, working under Korean coach Park Tae Sang.
Earlier this month, Sindhu said the COVID-19 pandemic-enforced break actually made her a "better player" because it gave her ample time to work on her technique and skills.
Rather than focusing on the negatives, Sindhu told the Press Trust of India in an interview, "It did not impact my preparation much for the Olympics because I think I've got enough time. Generally it's like you go for a tournament, come back and train. Most of the time, we don't have enough time to train. So I think this was the first time that we've got enough time to actually train and get ready for the Olympics.
"I don't think it has impacted on my preparations — not at all. In fact, I've actually learned a lot more, and I'm prepared for it."
Tokyo 2020 draw
Seeded sixth at Tokyo, World No 7 Sindhu was drawn in Group J alongside Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi before taking on Israel's Ksenia Polikarpova.
Ngan Yi is World No 34 while Polikarpova is 58th. Sindhu has a 5-0 record against Ngan Yi, the last of those encounters coming in 2017. She also has a 2-0 track record against Polikarpova. Sindhu last faced the Israeli in 2015. In the singles competition, only the top player from a group will qualify for the knock-out stage.
Sindhu is expected to face Group I's Mia Blichfeldt in the Last 16, provided both progress. If Sindhu can overcome the Dane, she is expected to meet Akane Yamaguchi in the quarter-finals.

National highways in south account for most road accidents, black spots; UP, Tamil Nadu top among states
In India, every year more people die of road traffic injuries or road accidents than of malaria, tuberculosis or HIV. In 2019 alone, over 1.51 lakh people died due to injuries caused by road accidents. This was more than the total deaths caused by the three diseases combined.
In 2019, malaria killed 7,700 people, the human immunodeficiency virus killed 58,960 while tuberculosis claimed 79,144 lives.
The situation, however, seems to be improving. Between 2018 and 2020 India witnessed a drop in road traffic injuries. While 1,40,843 road accidents were reported in national highways and expressways in 2018, they fell to 1,37,191 in 2019. The number of road accidents reduced further to 1,16,496 in 2020 (provisional data). The reduction in road traffic injuries was witnessed across all the seven major regions - south, north, east, west, north-west, north-east and central India.
NHs and expressways in south report maximum road traffic injuries
However, government data show that road accidents are concentrated in a few problem states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, or regions such as south India.
As per the 2020 provisional data, south India (includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Goa, and the UTs of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry) accounted for 41.6 percent or 48,476 of the total 1,16,496 road traffic injuries. The figures were 59,280 in 2018 and 57,457 in 2019.
In contrast, all other regions, north, west, east, central, north-west and north-east reported less than 15,000 road accidents in 2020.
| Region | States | Year 2018 | Year 2019 | Year 2020 |
| South | Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Goa, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Puducherry | 59280 | 57457 | 48476 |
| North | Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand | 17014 | 16843 | 14219 |
| North West | Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan | 18307 | 17118 | 13867 |
| Central | Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh | 13962 | 14251 | 13296 |
| East | West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand | 13910 | 14285 | 12884 |
| West | Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu | 13352 | 11871 | 9735 |
| North East | Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura | 5018 | 5366 | 3986 |
| Grand Total | 140843 | 137191 | 116496 | |
| SOURCE: Press Information Bureau, Government of India | ||||
Among other regions, in 2002, north (Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand) reported the second-highest (14,219) road accidents in 2020. The north-west region (Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan), which reported the second-highest road traffic injuries in 2019 at 17,718 reduced the numbers to 13,867 in 2020.
It's to be noted that south India also accounts for the maximum length of national highways at 24,098 kilometres as of 2017.
But then, among states, Tamil Nadu in the south reported 15,269 road accidents, the highest in 2020. The southern state had 4,946 kilometres of national highways as of 2017. Uttar Pradesh, which had 8,712 kilometres of national highways (second highest in 2017), accounted for 13,695 road traffic injuries and Karnataka (6,762 kilometres of NHs in 2017) reported 11,230 road accidents. These three states have contributed the maximum number of road accidents in 2018 as well as 2019.
However, Maharashtra, which accounted for the largest network of national highways at 15,437 kilometres in 2017, reported 9,355, 8,360 and 6,501 in 2018, 2019 and 2020, respectively.
What's the solution?
Reducing deaths due to road traffic injuries in India has been a major focus of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) under Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
Stating the need for an engineering-driven approach to reduce road traffic injuries in India, the Union minister in June 2021 had said that 50 percent of the road accidents in India are due to road engineering problems. He added that the government has taken special initiatives to identify and improve black spots.
The ministry, according to a report published in June this year, is allocating ₹14,000 crores for states, the National Highways Authority of India and other stakeholders to remove black spots under a scheme sanctioned by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
On Thursday, PIB issued a statement by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), stating that it has already identified 5,803 black spots on national highways based on accident and fatality data between 2015 and 2018 in 30 states and UTs.
The ministry said that temporary measures have been taken on 5,167 black spots and 2,923 Black spots have been permanently rectified.
What are black spots?
In transportation, a black spot is not a literal spot on the road, but a short stretch of the road usually of about 500 metres in length, which is prone to accidents.
As per MORTH, a stretch of road is termed a black spot if "five accidents involving serious injuries/fatalities or ten fatalities took place during the past three calendar years".
However, "some times a single accident can have multiple fatalities, hence a number of fatal/grievous accidents at the same location is a better indicator of problematic road/road environment (ie, black spot) than the number of fatalities".
Why are they crucial?
Identification and rectification of black spots on national highways and state highways (SHs) have been one of the dimensions of India's policies to reduce road traffic crashes. The rectification of black spots is done using short-term remedies such as installing cautionary road signs and markings, transverse bar markings, rumble strips and solar blinkers, etc, as well as long-term remedies such as providing flyover, underpasses, foot-over bridges, service roads, etc, wherever required.
The MORTH statement on Thursday said that some of these steps are being taken to rectify black spots. Besides, the NHAI, which is primarily responsible for constructing and managing national highways in India (NHIDCL and PWDs of states also manage them) has delegated financial power of up to Rs 50 crore to its regional officers to carry out rectification of black spots including land acquisition without sending files to NHAI headquarter for approval.
The ministry also said that it is taking traffic calming measures such as traffic warning signs, delineators, road studs, bar markings, humps at approach roads, etc, at vulnerable sections of National Highways to reduce road accident fatalities.
Is there a connection between black spots and accidents?
Earlier in the story, we looked at the states and regions which account for the maximum number of road accidents in national highways and expressways, now let us take a look at the concentration of black spots in the national highways and expressways from 30 states and UTs, data for which has been collected by MORTH's Transport Research Wing (TRP).
| Region | States | Black spots |
| South | Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Goa, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Puducherry | 2,493 |
| East | West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand | 992 |
| North West | Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan | 967 |
| North | Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand | 459 |
| Central | Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh | 445 |
| West | Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu | 304 |
| North East | Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura | 143 |
| Grand Total | 5,803 | |
| SOURCE: Press Information Bureau, Government of India | ||
As it's clear from the data above, national highways and expressways in south India account for the maximum number 2,493 of black spots -- nearly 43 percent of the 5,803 identified by the TRP.
While the concentration of black spots in other regions does not follow the same pattern as road accidents (check table at the top), the concentration of black spots is located majorly in five regions -- south, east, north-west, north and central -- which also reported the maximum number of road accidents.
Going beyond the national highways, expressways
India reported a total of 4,49,002 accidents in the year 2019. These accidents led to 1,51,113 accidental deaths and 4,51,361 accidental injuries. Based on recent data released by MORTH, of the nearly 4.5 lakh accidents that took place in 2019, 1,37,191 or 30.5 percent occurred in national highways and expressways.
These figures are indeed a matter of concern for the MORTH which owns the national highways, especially given the low distribution of the national highways -- the NHs accounted for just 1.94 percent of India's total roads as of 2017. But the situation on the flipside (other roads) seems just as alarming.
The remaining roads -- state highways (2.97 percent), district (9.94 percent), rural (70.65 percent) and urban roads (8.93 percent) and project roads (5.58 percent) -- are likely to be where the remaining 69.5 percent road accidents might be taking place.
While the MORTH's focus on improving black spots in national highways and expressways is a crucial initiative that needs to be completed on priority. Any initiative to reduce road accidents in India will be incomplete if it fails to include the state highways, district roads, rural roads.
MORTH didn't release any data related to road safety initiatives on these roads on Thursday.
Also, given the existing regional disparities in the national highway network in India, and the concentration of traffic-related injuries to a few states or regions, a localised approach may be more suited.

India vs Sri Lanka: From Suryakumar Yadav to Yuzvendra Chahal, five visiting players who impressed on the tour
“We’ve got 11 players to choose from and all eleven are playing,” said India coach Rahul Dravid on the eve of the second Test against Sri Lanka. As many as four debut caps were handed during the second T20I, which India lost by four wickets. There has been no dearth of opportunities for youngsters on this tour.
Much has been talked about India’s bench strength and that has been put to test in the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka. And some players have really grabbed this opportunity with both hands, standing out with some noteworthy performances. These can prove to be really rewarding, given we have a T20I World Cup later this year.
Here, we take a look at a few players who have impressed on the Sri Lanka tour:
Prithvi Shaw
With the Australia tour, where he was dropped after playing a single Test, behind him, Prithvi Shaw appeared a man on a mission as he worked on his technique alongside former India batsman and his coach Pravin Amre. And he returned with a bang, becoming the leading run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020/21. This was followed by a commanding IPL season, which was indefinitely postponed in May, where he was striking at 166.48 and averaging 38.50.
Now, his India return has largely been fruitful too. Even in the ODIs, Shaw showcased his hitting prowess, amassing 105 runs from three ODIs at a strike rate of 125, the best among the Indian batters who played all the three games. He got dismissed for a duck in the first T20I and didn’t feature in the next two games after Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19.
Along with Suryakumar Yadav, he was set to fly for the England tour and would have been a potential opening candidate before the Krunal episode transpired, just highlighting the team management’s faith in him.
He was fearless in his approach and is highly likely to be in the reckoning for India’s T20I World Cup squad later this year.
Yuzvendra Chahal
The combination of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal (aka Kul-Cha) was on display again, and while Kuldeep fared better than his recent past performances, it was Chahal who proved to be the standout spinner for India in the ODI series. He finished as the leading wicket-taker, with five wickets, despite playing only two games. Conceding 5.10 runs per over, he was also among the most economical bowlers on show.
In the only T20I he played on the tour, he picked up only a single wicket but kept things really tight, maintaining an economy rate of just 4.75.
If he continues to bowl tidy spells in the remainder of IPL 2021, it will become really hard for the Indian selectors to look past him for India’s T20I World Cup XI.
Suryakumar Yadav
Here is one hungry batsman who is making every opportunity count. Having received a national T20I call up earlier this year against England, ‘SKY’ as he is known, carried right from where he left in the previous series, averaging 62 in three ODIs against Sri Lanka. While selectors can be flexible with his position in the batting order, he gets quick runs with great ease. Such was the case in the ODI series, where he finished with a strike rate of 122.77.
The shortest format, however, is where he will be keenly looked at, given his IPL performances over the years. In the first (the only) T20I he featured for India on the tour, he continued his rollicking form, smashing fifty off 34 deliveries.
Deepak Chahar
Well known for bowling tight lines and moving the ball around upfront, Deepak lived upto his reputation on the Sri Lanka tour. He finished the ODI series with four wickets from two matches at an economy of 6.
He also showed that he can be a handy lower order batter, scoring an unbeaten 69 when India were in a precarious position and helping them seal the series with a win.
In the only T20I game where he featured for India, he bowled a fine spell of 2/24.
Shikhar Dhawan
Although a regular feature in the ODIs, Dhawan was designated as a second choice opener in the T20Is, with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma being the preferred ones as indicated by Virat Kohli in the T20I series against England.
The skipper did complete justice as the most experienced member of the side, finishing as the leading run scorer for India in the ODIs with an average of 64. His strike rate (88.88), however, is something that he will look to improve especially as he seeks to audition as an opener for India in the T20I World Cup.
The southpaw was in terrific form in IPL 2021 and didn’t disappoint in the two T20Is against Sri Lanka too, scoring 86 runs at a strike rate of 110.25.

Tokyo Olympics 2020: What is happening with Ugandan weightlifter Julius Ssekitoleko who went missing in Japan
On 16 July, seven days before the Olympics began in Tokyo, Julius Ssekitoleko, 20, a weightlifter from Uganda went missing from his hotel in Osaka, Japan. With Tokyo under a state of emergency due to the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, his disappearance made world news.
He was found four days later, far away from Osaka, in Mie. And was then sent back to his homeland as Japan police did not find him involved in any crime.
On his return on 23 July, the Ugandan government through a statement said that they are committed to Ssekitoleko's continuous rehabilitation to help him in his career, "but also help him understand how such acts of misconduct can not only affect him as an athlete but also other athletes in the sports sector and the nation at large".
It seemed after Ssekitoleko returned to his homeland, it will be the end of this lost and found story but it was not to be. What transpired after his landing in his homeland tells more about the weightlifter and draws a picture of several others like him in his country.
Walter Mwesigye, a Ugandan journalist who has been closely following the story, told Firstpost that Ssekitoleko was taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kampala after his arrest on 23 July (Friday) by the police for interrogation. And from there he was taken to another police station where he was kept till Monday, before being relocated to CID in Kampala where he was held till Wednesday.
As per law in Uganda, police cannot keep anyone in custody for more than 48 hours. In other words, police needs to show the accused in court after 48 hours. In Ssekitoleko's case, a clear violation of law had taken place as he was not taken to court till Monday.
On Wednesday he was released on police bond but that is also not where the story comes to an end.
By the time he was released, a new chapter was added in Ssekitoleko's story. He was now charged with a conspiracy to defraud his own government.
Julius Ssekitoleko is being held illegally by @PoliceUg for 6 days now. He has not been taken to court as police is still looking for a clear charge against him.
Ssekitoleko doesn't need incarceration, he needs advice and help. #StandWithSsekitoleko pic.twitter.com/jitZ5b3MOt— Walter Mwesigye (@MwesigyeWalter) July 28, 2021
Spokeperson for Uganda's CID, said Ssekitoleko may have conspired with a government official to be included on the team for Japan. As per the spokesperson, the doubts were raised on how Ssekitoleko went to Japan when he was not qualified for the Games.
"Investigations will confirm the depth of the conspiracy to defraud the government as he had been paid allowances at the time of his disappearance," the spokesman, Charles Twine, had told AFP.
What's interesting here is that on 23 July, when Ssekitoleko landed in Kampala, the same spokesperson had said that the government will help the weightlifter with counselling.
Walter told Firstpost,"When they first arrested Julius they said they wanted to counsel him and that he also had suicidal thoughts and that they were protecting him from taking his own life. That was a statement spokesperson of the CID made on 23rd."
Not only that, the next day, that is July 24, Twine told a radio channel that they had not found any charge whatsoever to put up against Julius. "On Sunday, some lawyers went to see him, some member of parliaments went to see him in jail. Then, on Monday, the CID said they were now interested to know how Julius left the country because they think it could have been in an attempt to human trafficking," said Walter. Julius was released on police bond but the police will continue to interrogate on these charges put against the 20-year-old.
They are waiting for the country's Weightlifting Federations officials and Olympic Commitee members to return from Games to resume investigation. So from just being a lost foreign athlete in Japan, Ssekitoleko is now being looked with suspicion in his own country and may serve 10 years in jail if his charges are found to be true.
***
Is Ssekitoleko really an enemy to his nation or he is just one of the jobless young man in Uganda searching for ways to warn livelihood in his country, where the support is minimum from the government?
While there are many who think he committed a crime in Uganda, other sympathise with the young weightlifter and find a reflection of their own stories in his. Before leaving his hotel, he had left a note in his room, which read that he wanted to work in Japan and that his belongings be returned to his family back home.

— NTV UGANDA (@ntvuganda) July 26, 2021
Ugandan legislator Betty Nambooze told AFP that "Ssekitoleko is not a criminal, he is a victim of an economy that works for the few (in the) privileged class."
The Union of Uganda Sports Federations and Associations had also condemned his detention.
"He deserves sympathy, not harsh treatment" the head of the union, Moses Muhangi, had earlier said.
Walter said that Julius is not the first athlete from Uganda to attempt something like this, that is going as a part of team from here and disappearing in a foreign land, then finding work and eventually settling there. And he certainly won't be the last.
After Julius left for Japan, hoping he will be playing in Olympics, his family was evicted from their rented home. His wife is six-months pregnent and his mother had always been telling him to quit sport and take up a job to support family.
Walter himself feels Julius is no criminal but a victim of his own stressed conditions.
"With the kind of background Julius comes from, he is basically a respresentative of what happens to athletes, men and women, in Uganda. There is very little support to them here in this country. And Julius definitely has no mental issues but he was pressed by kind of conditions he was going through. His wife is pregnant, five weeks to give birth. They were evicted from his rented house just shortly after he had left for Japan.
"This is a guy who almost feeds his mother, his wife and himself. He has no job, he is just a sports guy. Basically, his financial status really pushed him to where he was at that point."
After being released from the jail, Julius was seen wearing all his medals, as if making a statement to the government that he is not a criminal but an athlete who has lost his way due to the economic crisis in his country.

He says he is not aware of the charges preferred against him. pic.twitter.com/ss4Eb5Fps6— Baba Tv Uganda (@babatvuganda) July 28, 2021
Speaking to the media post his release, he told journalists that he spent a long time to qualify for Olympics and he was hopeful he would get the qualification and may be win a medal and probably that medal will come with some money and then he will be recognised by the government here when he returns which could help him to boost his financial status. That did not happen and after he was told he had not been qualified for the Games, he moved out of the hotel. His dreams crashed and he wanted to start afresh.

— Blanshe Musinguzi (@Johnblanshe_m) July 22, 2021
"We have seen that trend happen. If Julius had successfully managed to stay in Japan, it would not be the first time for a sportsman or woman from Uganda to go for such competition and not return.
"We have many boxers, footballers, other athletes who have taken the step that Julius took and managed to move on. It was just that Julius was unlucky. Everybody wants a better life, here in Uganda or anywhere in the world."
As soon as the news of Julius' arrest came, a wave of sympathy ran across Uganda. On twitter, his sympathisers began a hashtag #StandWithSsekitoleko was started to support him. A crowdfund is being raised, started by Walter himself, to support Ssekitoleko financially.
The laywers who came forwarded to help him did it for free of cost.
"It is an emotional attachment for many people here in Uganda who got to know about Julius case. It is a shared problem in the country. Julius is just one out of 100 Ugandas who leave this country," concluded Walter.
