Sheffield Shield: Will Pucovski-Marcus Harris pair smashes Waughs' record with 486-run opening stand

Sydney: Will Pucovski and Marcus Harris smashed double centuries to fire a message to Australia coach Justin Langer in setting a new record on Sunday for the biggest partnership in Sheffield Shield history.

The pair shared in a massive 486-run opening stand for Victoria against South Australia, surpassing the previous mark of 464 set by Steve and Mark Waugh for New South Wales in 1990.

Harris, who has not played a Test since being dropped following the 2019 Ashes against England, finally fell for 239, caught behind off the bowling of Wes Agar.

It left Pucovski in the middle and he remained unbeaten on 255 when captain Peter Handscomb declared at 564 for three.

Their exploits will cause incumbent Test openers Joe Burns and David Warner to sit up and take notice, with Langer's squad for an upcoming four-Test home series against India yet to be announced.

Pucovski, one of Australia's brightest prospects, has been on the cusp of Test selection for the past two summers, but has battled mental health problems.

He was in the national set-up for Tests last summer against Sri Lanka, but after being overlooked for the first and again missing out on selection for the second he was released to return home and deal with his issues.

The 22-year-old said last week he was ready to fight for a Test spot again.

"I just feel like I'm in a really good space now, which is awesome, just in everyday life and with my cricket," he said.

"I don't have much control over whether they pick me or not, but I'm definitely very keen."

Serie A: Inter Milan left furious by contentious VAR decision during draw against Parma; Atalanta beat Crotone

Milan: Inter Milan came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Parma on Saturday but were left furious by a contentious VAR decision, while Atalanta beat bottom club Crotone to move second in Serie A.

Antonio Conte's Inter have dropped points in three of their first six league games this season and could slip five points behind city rivals and leaders AC Milan, who visit Udinese on Sunday.

Inter had a strong penalty appeal when Botond Balogh hauled down Ivan Perisic in the second half, with Conte skipping his press conference, apparently in protest at the decision.

"It is our duty also to protest at the refereeing decisions. This is our only venue for protesting, as we have no other way of making our voices heard," said sporting director Beppe Marotta.

"We realise VAR only intervenes with a clear and obvious error, but today there was a clear and obvious penalty. So either the referee pays closer attention or VAR must be used.

"If VAR is only partially used, then that damages everyone and creates a sense of inequality. After six games, it is only right to make this comment."

Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta, who drew 2-2 with Ajax in the Champions League in midweek, sit one point behind AC Milan.

Inter dominated the first half at the San Siro, but Perisic volleyed off target and Achraf Hakimi nodded over from close range when he should have done better.

Parma made their hosts pay in the first minute after the break, as Gervinho powered home his first goal of the season.

The home side were given a mountain to climb just after the hour mark when Roberto Inglese slid the ball through for Gervinho to score his second.

Inter were desperate to try and keep pace with AC Milan and got themselves back into the game less than two minutes later thanks to Marcelo Brozovic's deflected strike.

Andrea Ranocchia almost levelled shortly afterwards, but saw his header saved at point-blank range by Parma goalkeeper Luigi Sepe.

Ivan Perisic headed in Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick in the second minute of injury time, but it was too late for Inter to find a winner.

Atalanta back to winning ways

Luis Muriel scored twice as Atalanta bounced back from successive losses in Serie A with a 2-1 win at Crotone earlier on Saturday.

Atalanta conceded seven goals in back-to-back defeats by Napoli and Sampdoria.

They were not at their fluent best on Saturday, but did enough to edge out Crotone, who remain without a league win this season.

Gasperini said he had tough decisions to make ahead of next week's crucial Champions League group-stage game against Liverpool, after Hans Hateboer and Cristian Romero were both substituted at Crotone with muscle problems.

"Serie A and the Champions League are two very different tournaments and I don't want to choose between them," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see, (defender Rafael) Toloi also had a heavy knock to his knee, so we'll see who we can recover and who we can't."

Muriel, who scored 18 Serie A goals last term despite only starting 10 matches, grabbed a 26th-minute opener by collecting Ruslan Malinovsky's pass and drilling a low shot into the net.

Papu Gomez wasted an excellent chance to double the lead, but Colombian forward Muriel did slot in his second goal seven minutes before half-time.

Nwankwo Simy gave the hosts hope before the break, but their frustrations boiled over in the second half and coach Giovanni Stroppa was sent to the stands after receiving two yellow cards in a matter of minutes.

Erste Bank Open: Andrey Rublev sets up final against 'lucky loser' Lorenzo Sonego in Vienna

Vienna: Andrey Rublev advanced to his fifth final of the season Saturday, setting up a title match against Lorenzo Sonego at the Erste Bank Open.

The fifth-seeded Rublev led 6-4, 4-1 when Kevin Anderson pulled out of their semi-final with a right thigh issue.

Rublev is 4-0 in finals in this shortened season and can become the first player with five tournament wins.

Sonego beat Dan Evans 6-3, 6-4, a day after he upset top-seeded Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

“I am really happy, after yesterday it was not easy to play against Evans but I won and I am so happy,” said Sonego, who had lost in qualification but was added to the main draw to replace the injured Diego Schwartzman and hasn't dropped a set since.

The 42nd-ranked Italian is seeking his second career title, after winning in Antalya last year.

Rublev is 1-0 against Sonego after winning their duel at a clay-court challenger event in 2016.

Anderson, who won the event in 2018, wore tape on his thigh from the start of the match. He first got a medical timeout after losing the opening game of the second set and asked for treatment again at 3-0 before playing just two more games.

It was the second time this week that Rublev’s opponent quit their match, after Jannik Sinner pulled out after three games with a foot injury in the second round.

Coming off back-to-back wins in Hamburg and St Petersburg, the Russian improved to 18-1 in his last four events.

“I came here thinking I had nothing to lose,” Rublev said. “I came here to enjoy, to do my best, to fight for every point every match. Now I am in the final, I will keep thinking the same way.”

In the opening set, Rublev and Anderson eased through their service games until 5-4, when Anderson held off two break points before double-faulting on a third.

Rublev, who served 11 aces, has not lost a service game all tournament.

After undergoing knee surgery twice, Anderson was seeking his first final since earning his sixth career title in Pune in January 2019.

In the second semi-final, Sonego took a quick 3-0 lead against Evans and held on to that advantage as he conceded just four points on serve in the opening set.

Evans received treatment for a left shoulder problem after losing his serve in the first game of the second set. He broke Sonego in the next game.

However, the Italian broke back immediately and later closed out the win as Evans netted a forehand on Sonego's first match point.

IPL 2020: Decoding Delhi Capitals' downward slump and how they can improve

There was a time in this edition of the IPL, not too long ago, when Delhi Capitals – along with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore – had pulled away from the others in the race to the Playoffs. Now, as the league stage enters its last round, these three sides are still at the top. However, while Mumbai are guaranteed a top spot, Bangalore and Delhi have fallen behind; and given their ordinary net run rates, a defeat in the last match – when they play each other – may well spell doom for both.

This is particularly true for Delhi (-0.159), whose net run rate is behind not only that of Bangalore (-0.145), but also Sunrisers Hyderabad (+0.555) and Kings XI Punjab (-0.133), both of whom are two points behind them. In other words, they as good as have to win their last match.

So, what went wrong? Why did Delhi lose four matches on the trot after winning seven out of nine? Ajinkya Rahane played two of these matches: he got a golden duck in one and played a useful cameo in the other before being replaced by Prithvi Shaw – who did not do much either.

In the first of these matches, Shikhar Dhawan got his second hundred of the season, batting through the innings with a 61-ball 106 not out. He followed this with scores of 6, 0, and 0. Dhawan has been Delhi’s go-to batsman this season, and his failure has certainly come as a major blow.

But Delhi’s major problem has been the simultaneous struggle of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, both of whom had played key roles in their success over the past two seasons. It is not that they have not got runs. They have. But they came at a rate way too slow. By the time they were done, Delhi did not have enough firepower to help them reach that big score.

Capture1

Iyer and Pant have clearly slowed down considerably. Worse, between them they have faced 203 balls across these four matches – about 51 balls a match.

This is evident from the partnerships they had. They added 63 in 53 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (chasing 195!) and 35 in 44 against Mumbai. Of course, the quality of attack they were up against was superb (especially Mumbai’s), but their record across not one but four matches tells the story.

It is not that Delhi did not try. With an improbable 220 to chase against Hyderabad, they promoted both Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer above Pant and himself. When they failed, he immediately reverted to Plan A. One may argue that they had to see off the initial overs, but holding the onslaught back till after the 10th over was never going to work against Mumbai, who do not have a weak bowler per se.

Capture6

*Hetmyer missed three matches out of the first nine

While Dhawan’s (and his partner’s) failure might have led to slow starts, Iyer and Pant delayed the onslaught for too late, often leaving very little for the others. This meant that Hetmyer and Stoinis, who had scored at better strike rates than Iyer and Pant over the first nine matches, were allowed only 62 balls between them in four matches – 2.3 overs for two big hitters.

With no time to settle down, Hetmyer and Stoinis struggled every time. When they got a chance, the target (220) was too steep to make a match out of it.

Perhaps some change in batting line-up may come in handy in the match against Bangalore. They could have left out a struggling Pant to add some firepower to the batting, but he is their only Indian wicketkeeper. Resting him will mean they have to leave out one of Hetmyer, Stoinis, and their two South African fast bowlers.

And then there is the bowling. Delhi batted first in seven of their first nine matches. They won six of these. Chasing, they won one out of two. Their batsmen had always provided their bowlers enough buffer. Of the seven occasions they batted first, their lowest score was 157 and they crossed 175 four times. Batting second, they once chased down 180.

But the bowling attack that had backed up their batsmen so well till now fell apart thrice in a row. They failed to defend 165 against Punjab, then let Kolkata pile up 194/6 and Hyderabad 219/2.

In fact, in every match they have had at least two bowlers going for nine or more an over.

Capture3

The Punjab match makes curious reading. All three of Rabada, Ashwin, and Axar conceded only 6.75 an over, while Daniel Sams (playing for Nortje) went for 7.50. Delhi controlled the match for 16 of the 19 overs bowled – and yet could not finish things off.

However, a similar reason cannot be applied to the other contests. Even if one discounts the Mumbai match (the target was too low), one or more of the frontline bowlers always went for runs. Worse, they failed to pick up wickets, thus allowing to put up at least one major partnership every time.

Capture4

Delhi have taken 14 wickets in their last four matches amidst these partnerships. Of these, Rabada and Nortje have taken four apiece. These may not seem too bad, but one must remember that Rabada had taken 19 wickets in his first nine. Nortje – the only bowler to hit 154 kph this time (he has done it four times!) – has had a tough phase too.

Capture5

As is evident, their economy and balls per wicket have both taken a toll.

It is difficult to come back when one of batting and bowling starts failing. When both do at the same time, it becomes almost impossible. Of course, Bangalore – their opposition in the last match – are also coming off a massive defeat.

IPL 2020: SRH expose chink in RCB’s batting as race to playoffs heats up

If there is one thing we realised on the final league-stage Saturday of this edition of the Indian Premier League, it’s that no team – barring Mumbai Indians – wants an easy qualification route.

In a season where Chennai Super Kings have never been in the knockouts’ race, you would think the other teams would pull up their socks. They haven’t, with all five teams still in contention for the remaining three spots as you read this. While it is an ode to Mumbai in how well oiled they are, the consistency among other teams in being inconsistent is worrying. In a league that is in its 13th season, you expect more than just two teams constantly making the knockouts. From a holistic IPL viewpoint, that is staggering.

Two teams are synonymous with this inconsistency – Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The former were quite brilliant in their early-season form, yet have managed to squander any gains whatsoever and are now on the cusp of exit thanks to faltering run-rate. Royal Challengers Bangalore are only marginally better in terms of NRR as they also blew their massive chance to join Mumbai early in the knockouts’ sanctity. Both these losses were marred by shoddy batting performances.

RCB's downward spiral means Virat Kohli's men are in a precarious position ahead of the playoffs. Image: Sportzpics

To Delhi’s credit, at least they lost to the table-toppers, the all-conquering team in this tournament, one which looks likely to lift the trophy again. It is the Bangalore unit that really needs to look itself in the mirror and ascertain what is really going on.

Yes, this has been a season better than most for the Royal Challengers, but their habit of making unforced mistakes has cost them before. Despite registering vital wins and points on the board, RCB simply haven’t been able to consistently string together a run of form that would make them contenders for the title.

There are two points of consideration here. One, Devdutt Padikkal has transformed their season and the way RCB play. There was a time when Chris Gayle and KL Rahul were tearing down attacks at the top of Bangalore’s batting order. But there was an inherent imbalance about their batting. It was too top-heavy and often impacted their team selection. Then, after the duo’s departure, the onus fell on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers to score, which didn’t bring desired results either.

This is why Padikkal’s arrival on the scene is such a breath of fresh air. He has that youthful chutzpah, that attacking adventurism of an opening batsman, and the license to go after the bowling. It has resulted in 422 runs in 13 innings with four half-centuries, an average of 32.46, and a strike-rate of 127.10. These figures are important because they underline consistency in his performance, which in turn has meant Bangalore have got off to good starts with regularity.

The other aspect of these figures is also vital. Padikkal has one more half-century than Kohli; his total is only 9 runs shy of Kohli’s total of 431 runs in 13 innings; more importantly, their strike-rates are near similar. It is not to say that Padikkal has outdone his captain, but there is a certain dependency on the opening batsman now. If he scores and gets off to a good start, Bangalore invariably start off well. When he doesn’t, like on Saturday when Sandeep Sharma uprooted his stumps early, they get into all kinds of problems.

RCB's over-reliance on AB de Villiers has been their undoing. Image: Sportzpics

It is because the other two opening options – Aaron Finch and Josh Philippe – haven’t done much. It is also because Kohli hasn’t quite hit a purple patch in his batting this season. As a consequence, much depends on Padikkal’s starts and you cannot heap that much pressure on a 20-year-old. This is where the second point creeps in.

AB de Villiers has managed only 363 runs in 12 innings, averaging 45.37 with four half-centuries, but his strike-rate is what matters most. Compared to the low 120s of both Kohli and Padikkal, de Villiers is striking the ball at 163.51 in the 2020 IPL. He is sixth in the highest strike-rate list this season among batsmen with more than 10 innings and 100 runs. Moreover, he is the only RCB batsman in the top-end of that list.

More than Padikkal, Royal Challengers Bangalore depend on de Villiers for explosive knocks in the middle order. It is the bedrock of their batting plan – get a quick start thanks to Padikkal, allow Kohli to build a base, and then unleash de Villiers to knock the opponents out. It has worked, but not consistently enough as you can see from these three batsmen’s figures. The problem being this plan is failing more often at the business end of this tournament.

De Villier’s last score of note – 55 not out – came five matches ago. Since then, he has scored 24, 15, and 39, all of which failed to make the necessary impact. Kohli has scores of 7, 9, 50* in those three matches, but still, no wins or points from these games. Padikkal was the only batsman to score anything of note (74) against Mumbai Indians two matches ago. It has resulted in a string of three losses in a row, comparable to Delhi Capitals’ four consecutive losses. Of course, this is not the kind of form you want going into the knockouts.

Capitals’ loss was a complete batting failure against the tournament’s best bowling attack. But Bangalore were undone because Sunrisers Hyderabad went to work on their batting weakness, coupled with shoddy shot selection and some fantastic bowling. Padikkal’s early dismissal didn’t help, and Kohli has been vulnerable to Sandeep Sharma as well. Kane Williamson just knew where to be stationed for that aerial cover drive.

It is the de Villiers-Rashid Khan battle that was key to this contest. Against Kings XI Punjab at this very ground, RCB held back AB de Villiers against leg-spin and maintained a left-right combination at the crease. All of that has gone out of the window, but could it be justified on Saturday? No, because Rashid Khan is not some junior bowler in Punjab’s attack (all due respect). This was a battle of the best versus the best, and for once, de Villiers came second on a pitch that has progressively slowed down as the tournament has progressed.

Since he couldn’t take on Rashid Khan, he went hard against the other bowlers, albeit too hard against Shahbaz Nadeem. At 71-3 in 11 overs then, Bangalore’s worst nightmare had come true. Their three most dependable batsmen were gone, and what ensued was a display of bad shot selection, especially from Philippe who predictably holed out against Khan.

Sure, Sunrisers Hyderabad were made to work in their 121-run chase but the writing was on the wall. The underlying point here being Bangalore’s chink in their batting armoury and it has been so woefully exposed at a vital stage in the tournament. That’s the bad part. The good parts being their next opponents, Delhi Capitals, aren’t doing too well in the batting department either.

It is a battle of two faltering batting line-ups on Monday in a potential knockout match before the, well, actual knockouts.

IPL 2020: 'We weren't brave enough with the bat', says RCB skipper Virat Kohli after defeat to SRH

Sharjah: "We weren't brave enough with the bat," said a disappointed Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli after his side's five-wicket defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League match.

Kohli said Saturday's defeat has virtually made their last game against Delhi Capitals on Monday a must-win for a top-two finish in the standings.

Virat Kohli said Monday's game against Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi would be a cracker with both the teams locked at 14 points. Sportzpics

RCB only managed 120 for seven after being put in to bat. SRH chased down the target in 14.1 overs to zoom to fourth spot from seventh in the league standings.

It was RCB's third consecutive defeat in the tournament but they stayed at second place in the table with 14 points from 13 games.

"It was never enough. We thought 140 might be a good total to sort of get into the game on that kind of wicket. We weren't brave enough with the bat throughout the innings and credit to them (SRH) - they used the pitch well and the change of pace," Kohli said after the match.

"It is a competitive tournament and you can't take any games lightly or any teams for granted, the situation is in front of us - we have to win our last game to hopefully finish in the top two."

Kohli said Monday's game against Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi would be a cracker with both the teams locked at 14 points.

"I have always been a Bangalore boy in the IPL, never sort of drifted towards Delhi," Kohli said.

Kohli said dew played an important role in the second innings.

"Things changed drastically in the second innings. There was a lot of dew which we didn't quite predict. They got it right at the toss eventually. In the end it was very difficult to hold the ball.

"Strange one. In between we thought the weather has become pleasant and there wasn't any dew, but last few games in Dubai and here as well there has been dew. The pattern keeps changing but regardless (of that) you need to have runs on the board."

SRH now have 12 points from 13 games and need to win their last league game against table-toppers Mumbai Indians to stay in the hunt.

Their captain David Warner said SRH's goal was clear coming into the match— win the last two games and progress into the play-offs.

"We knew we had to beat the top two teams in order to progress. We got one more to go against Mumbai. Losing Vijay (Shankar) is a big miss. For us we have worked out, how to go about at the top of the order.

"With the bowling, all the credit goes to them. We are finding the right balance and the right partnerships. To go for less than 20 in 4 overs, it's ridiculous," he said.

"We knew we had to win today, and that's the case in the next game. In 2016 we had to win three games and we did that."

Bundesliga: Thomas Mueller equals Oliver Kahn's record as Bayern Munich go top with victory over FC Koln

Berlin: European champions Bayern Munich went top of the Bundesliga on Saturday as Thomas Mueller equalled Oliver Kahn's record for most league wins in the famous shirt in a 2-1 victory at Cologne.

Mueller, 31, converted an early penalty to put the visitors on the way to a success which saw him match the tally of legendary goalkeeper Kahn on 260 league wins.

Robert Lewandowski, who scored 10 goals in the opening five league games, was rested ahead of Bayern's midweek Champions League match at Salzburg and next Saturday's top-of-the-table Bundesliga clash at second-placed Dortmund.

"(We were) too nonchalant up front, even though the passion was there," said Mueller despite the reigning champions' victory.

Serge Gnabry, who scored Bayern's second goal, admitted: "We let the opponent back into the game, it wasn't our best performance."

An early header by Gnabry led to Cologne defender Marius Wolf giving away the 13th-minute penalty which Mueller scored.

Gnabry added the second on the stroke of half-time when he rolled the ball into the net to finish a counter-attack.

However, Cologne improved in the second half and substitute midfielder Dominick Drexler pulled back a late goal.

Leipzig crash

Later, RB Leipzig, who started the weekend top of the table, blew the chance to reclaim first place after losing 1-0 at Borussia Monchengaldbach.

The away defeat capped a week to forget for Julian Nagelsmann's Leipzig following their 5-0 thumping at Manchester United in the Champions League.

Leipzig forwards Yussuf Poulsen and Dani Olmo both wasted chances while Gladbach had a goal by Alassane Plea ruled offside.

Austrian winger Hannes Wolf, 21, who is on loan from Leipzig this season, sealed the win with his first Bundesliga goal on 60 minutes before Plea hit the post.

"I've waited a year and a half for this moment. It's taken a lot off my mind," said Hannes who joined RB Leipzig in 2019, but failed to break into the first-team.

"I see myself as a Borussia Moenchengladbach player and hope to be here for longer just than this year."

The result leaves Leipzig third and Gladbach fourth.

Earlier Dortmund climbed to second, despite resting striker Erling Braut Haaland, as defender Mats Hummels scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld.

Hummels picked up a late thigh injury while making a tackle.

However, Dortmund forward Julian Brandt backed Hummels to be fit for their Champions League match at Club Brugge on Wednesday, saying: "He'll make it— he heals quick."

Dortmund took the lead when England winger Jadon Sancho curled in a corner which bounced off Hummels and rolled over the line on 53 minutes.

Hummels grabbed his second with a header from a Marco Reus cross 19 minutes from time.

Hahn double

Augsburg climbed to fifth as winger Andre Hahn scored two late goals in a 3-1 home win against bottom side Mainz.

Swiss winger Ruben Vargas gave Augsburg the lead with a superb bicycle kick just before half-time.

Mainz sub Karim Onisiwo equalised on the hour mark, but Augsburg took advantage of tired legs as Germany winger Hahn netted twice in the final 10 minutes.

Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt picked up a point on his third anniversary in the job with a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.

US striker Josh Sargent swept his shot home early in the second half to give Bremen the lead.

Frankfurt's Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada had a first-half goal ruled out when VAR spotted Andre Silva was offside.

However, the Portugal international made amends when he buried Kamada's cross into the Bremen net for the equaliser on 65 minutes.

Schalke, second from bottom, have gone 22 league games without a win after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Stuttgart on Friday.

A first-half header by Schalke's teenage defender Malick Thiaw was cancelled out by a leveller from Argentinian forward Nicolas Gonzalez for the visitors.

Schalke are edging towards the unwanted record of Tasmania Berlin, who now play in Germany's fifth tier, who went 31 Bundesliga matches without victory in 1965/66.

Ligue 1: Kylian Mbappe on target as Neymar-less PSG ease to victory over Nantes

Paris: Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot as Paris Saint-Germain eased to their seventh straight Ligue 1 win on Saturday, beating Nantes 3-0 away to move provisionally three points clear at the top of the table.

All the goals came in the second half at the Stade de la Beaujoire, with Ander Herrera opening the scoring two minutes after the restart and Mbappe converting a 65th-minute spot-kick before Pablo Sarabia secured the points late on.

PSG have now taken maximum points since starting the season with back-to-back defeats and the reigning champions are three clear of Lille and Rennes at the summit.

Lille, who are unbeaten, can rejoin the club from the capital at the top if they beat Lyon on Sunday. Rennes beat Brest 2-1 on Saturday.

"I am very happy. We made lots of changes because we felt it was necessary. We don't expect things to be perfect and spectacular all the time," said Paris coach Thomas Tuchel.

He made six changes to his line-up following the 2-0 midweek win at Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, with Neymar one of those missing after suffering an adductor injury that is expected to keep him out until the upcoming international break.

However Nantes, whose game at Lens last weekend was called off following a coronavirus outbreak in their opponents' squad, were missing an entire back four, including three to Covid-19.

Sarabia hit the post early on for the visitors in this game, played behind closed doors after France returned to a full national lockdown in an attempt to stem a surge in coronavirus cases.

Nigerian winger Moses Simon then missed an open goal for Nantes, somehow failing to turn in Randal Kolo Muani's assist.

'No injury' for Kean, Mbappe

Kolo Muani then curled a shot agonisingly wide after a Herrera slip had let Nantes in, before PSG took off Moise Kean— scorer of four goals in the previous two games— at the break.

The league leaders got the breakthrough at the start of the second half when Mbappe picked out the former Manchester United midfielder Herrera to fire home.

Mbappe, who moved from the left wing to a more central role in the second half, then benefited from a very soft penalty award when he went down under pressure from Jean-Charles Castelletto.

The World Cup winner stroked home the penalty for his seventh league goal of the season, all of which have come in the last six matches.

He was then withdrawn and headed straight down the tunnel clutching his right hamstring, but Tuchel said it was nothing to worry about ahead of Wednesday's key Champions League clash with RB Leipzig in Germany.

"It is just fatigue. It's not an injury," said Tuchel. "The same for Kean. He had just taken a few knocks."

Just before Mbappe went off, Nantes won a penalty of their own when Colin Dagba fouled Marcus Coco in the box, but Abdoul Kader Bamba's effort from 12 yards was saved by Keylor Navas.

Rennes back on track before Chelsea

PSG have conceded just one goal in their seven-game winning run, while Sarabia chipped in after pouncing on Imran Louza's back-pass to make it 23 goals scored in that time.

Earlier, Rennes got back on track by coming from behind to beat Brest as they prepare to go to Chelsea in the Champions League in midweek.

Defensive duo Damien Da Silva and Nayef Aguerd got the goals for Rennes after Franck Honorat had given the visitors the lead at Roazhon Park in a Brittany derby.

A third-place finish in the last, curtailed French season allowed Rennes to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, but they have taken just one point from their first two group games, a 1-1 draw with Russians Krasnodar being followed by a 1-0 loss away to Sevilla in midweek.

They face Chelsea in London on Wednesday, a game which will be missed by teenage France midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who is injured and also played no part against Brest.

IPL 2020: Do-or-die game for RR and KKR as teams battle to seal playoffs qualification

Dubai: They have just given their playoffs qualification hopes a lift and Rajasthan Royals will look to sustain the momentum against Kolkata Knight Riders in another must-win IPL game on Sunday.

Besides a victory in their last league game, the inaugural edition winners will also need other results to go their way if they are to make the playoffs of the lucrative event, in its 13th edition now.

The best-case scenario for RR would be Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad losing their respective last matches.

In that case, RR will go through with 14 points, without net run rate coming into play.

File image of KKR's Varun Chakravarthy. Sportzpics

However, RR's first task is to do what is within its control – win the match against the Knight Riders and then hope for the best. Given the tight situation, the bigger the margin of win, the better it will be for the Steve Smith-led side.

The Royals can certainly look forward to their batting at the Dubai International Stadium. Their talismanic England all-rounder Ben Stokes has just won a Man-of-the-Match award, having made a breezy half century after picking up two wickets, in the team's win over Kings XI Punjab on Friday.

The 2019 World Cup final hero getting his mojo back, at such a crucial juncture of the tournament, is great news for the Royals. And, needless to say, a bad one for KKR as the leading all-rounder can singlehandedly influence the outcome of a game.

Sanju Samson rediscovering his touch must have also gladdened the hearts of the RR team management. The wicketkeeper-batsman had started the tournament on an explosive note before going off the rails midway, only to come back all guns blazing against KXIP.

Skipper Smith can play according to the situation and opener Robin Uthappa can put any attack to the sword on his day.

No opposition takes Jos Buttler lightly and then there is Rahul Tewatia and young Riyan Parag down the order, beefing up RR's batting.

Jofra Archer has been the standout performer with the ball and he will again shoulder RR's responsibility in bowling.

While they have as many points as RR and KXIP, KKR's road to the playoffs looks the toughest, thanks to their abysmal net run rate. Their only chance of qualification is if they beat Royals and finish on 14 points, with none of the other contenders reaching that tally. That seems improbable, the last two successive losses badly hurting their prospects.

Nevertheless, the likes of Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, captain Eoin Morgan in batting and Varun Chakravarthy, Pat Cummins and Kamlesh Nagarkoti with ball would like to give it their all.

IPL 2020: Must-win game for Kings XI Punjab as Chennai Super Kings look to spoil the party again

Abu Dhabi: Their play-off chances hanging in balance, Kings XI Punjab will leave no stone unturned as they take on Chennai Super Kings in a must-win Indian Premier League game on Sunday.

KXIP's chances of a top four finish took a serious hit after Rajasthan Royals handed them a seven-wicket loss, snapping their impressive five match-winning streak.

KXIP will now have to win against CSK to remain in the contention for the playoffs with 14 points. Their net run-rate is -0.133 which can work in their favour.

CSK, already out of the reckoning for the first time ever, will aim to end their dismal campaign on a positive note.

KL Rahul also praised pacer Mohammed Shami for his incredible over that allowed KXIP to the match against MI into second super over where they eventually won it. Image: Sportzpics for BCCI

The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team, languishing at the bottom of the points table, head in to the clash after notching up back-to-back wins over RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders.

With skipper Rahul, the leading run-scorer of the tournament, and the flamboyant Chris Gayle coming good and the marauding Nicholas Pooran to follow at No 4, KXIP will fancy their chances at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

It remains to be seen if Mayank Agarwal, who has missed three games, returns to the side.

KXIP's bowling has been instrumental in their recent wins. However, against the Royals they leaked runs and were unable to pick wickets and skipper Rahul will hope his bowlers will be on top of their game against a CSK side, which cruised to a 10-wicket win in their previous meeting.

For CSK, 23-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad has shown a lot of spark, notching up back-to-back fifties to set up the wins against RCB and KKR. Ravindra Jadeja has been in fantastic form, smashing boundaries and sixes towards the end of the innings.

The CSK bowling unit, boosted by the inclusion of New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santer, has done well in the previous two outings and will look to keep the momentum going.

LaLiga: Barcelona endure 1-1 draw against Alaves to remain winless in four matches; Eden Hazard inspires Real Madrid's win

Madrid: Barcelona made it four LaLiga games without a win on Saturday after failing to beat 10-man Alaves, a 1-1 draw leaving Ronald Koeman's side sitting 12th in the table.

Luis Rioja put Alaves in front at Mendizorrotza after an error from Barca's back-up goalkeeper Neto, with Antoine Griezmann equalising in the second half, a minute after Jota Peleteiro had been sent off.

But with almost half an hour left and an extra man, Barcelona were still unable to find a winner, instead settling for a draw to go with recent defeats by Getafe and Real Madrid, and another draw against Sevilla.

It means Madrid, who had earlier won 4-1 at home to Huesca, now sit eight points clear of their Catalan rivals, having played a game more, while Atletico are six ahead after they beat Osasuna 3-1. Atletico will go top if they win their game in hand.

Even at this early stage in the title race, the gap is significant and Koeman will know the scrutiny on his position as coach will increase, particularly after the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu as president on Tuesday.

Bartomeu appointed Koeman coach in August and eight points from the first six league games is not the sort of form that will impress the next president and board, who should be voted in before the end of January.

"I'm very disappointed," said Koeman. "Once again we haven't played well enough to get a result. The first goal was a gift and then we created a lot of chances but didn't take them."

Koeman's decision to substitute Ansu Fati with 12 minutes left was particularly surprising given Fati had been arguably Barcelona's most dangerous player, perhaps even more threatening than Lionel Messi, who endured a frustrating night.

Messi has still not scored in open play this season and while he was at the heart of almost every Barca attack, his touch and finishing was again not as crisp as usual. He was booked in the first half for dissent.

Fati and Griezmann both missed early chances while a Messi free-kick would have gone in had Florian Lejeune not been perfectly placed on the line.

Frenkie de Jong was unlucky not to have had a penalty when nudged out of a free header by Ximo Navarro before a Barca mistake gifted Alaves the opening goal.

Gerard Pique underestimated how close Neto was to him and the defender's firmly hit backpass caught the goalkeeper by surprise. Neto failed to adjust his feet and Rioja capitalised, robbing him of the ball and tapping into an open net.

Koeman made three changes at half-time, with Pedri, Francisco Trincao and Miralem Pjanic all coming on.

But Barca found it difficult to break down the Alaves defence until Peleteiro gave them an opening. He booted Pique in the face to earn a second yellow card in the 62nd minute and in the 63rd, Griezmann equalised, an exquisite, lifted finish pulling Barcelona level.

It was almost 2-1 a minute later but Messi's finish was well saved while Griezmann had a second ruled out for offside. Fati fired at goal before going off and Pique's finish was cleared off the line. Alaves held on.

Hazard ends goal drought

Eden Hazard earlier scored his first goal for Real Madrid in over a year and his team appear to have turned a corner after their comfortable win over Huesca.

Eden Hazard's stunning goal got Real Madrid underway against Huesca. AP

Hazard has had a terrible time with injuries since joining Madrid for 100 million euros from Chelsea in 2019 but the Belgian will hope his stunning strike from distance at the Alfredo di Stefano can kick-start his career in Spain.

"We know the quality that Eden has," Zidane said. "He scored a good goal and we needed it in the first half, because after his first goal the game was different."

Karim Benzema and Fede Valverde made the win secure before Huesca scored through David Ferreiro, only for Benzema to add his second and Madrid's fourth in injury-time.

It caps an encouraging week for Zidane's side, which began with the Clasico win at Camp Nou and finishes with them top of the table, two points ahead of Real Sociedad.

Premier League: Diogo Jota caps Liverpool's fightback to beat West Ham; Manchester City, Chelsea also claim wins

London: Diogo Jota capped Liverpool's dramatic fightback as the Premier League champions beat West Ham 2-1 to move three points clear at the top, while Manchester City and Chelsea both won to keep in touch with the leaders on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were rocked by Pablo Fornals' early strike at Anfield as the West Ham midfielder punished a poor header from Joe Gomez in the 10th minute.

The Reds drew level in the 42nd minute when Mohamed Salah was fouled by Arthur Masuaku and the Egyptian stepped up to convert the penalty for his eighth goal of the season.

Liverpool thought they had claimed the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when substitute Jota turned in a loose ball.

Jota had pounced after Lukasz Fabianski saved Sadio Mane's shot but after a lengthy delay that saw referee Kevin Friend make use of the pitchside monitor, the goal was ruled out for a foul by the Senegal winger.

In the 85th minute, Jota ran onto Xherdan Shaqiri's pass to score his fourth goal since joining from Wolves in September.

It was Liverpool's fourth successive victory since influential defender Virgil van Dijk was sidelined for several months with a serious knee injury suffered against Everton.

Despite their defensive issues this term, Liverpool have opened up a three-point lead over second placed Everton, with their Merseyside rivals in action at Newcastle on Sunday.

"It's not about shining, or flying, or whatever, it's about hard work. That was absolutely necessary against this opponent," Klopp said after Liverpool equalled their club record of 63 home league games unbeaten.

"We had a lot of good football, not 500 chances or whatever but enough. I want to see us dig in and we did that, and I'm so happy."

While Liverpool were completing their win, government officials confirmed the Premier League could continue despite a new national lockdown that will last until at least December.

"The world is in a difficult place and we are happy to be allowed to play football," Klopp said.

Title rivals City have yet to hit the free-scoring form of Pep Guardiola's side at their best, as for the third consecutive league game they were held to a solitary goal.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker celebrates after scoring against Sheffield United. AP

But Kyle Walker's long-range strike against his former club was good enough to earn a 1-0 win at goal-shy Sheffield United.

It was his first goal for a year in his 100th Premier League appearance for City.

A fourth win in five games in all competition edges City up to eighth, five points behind Liverpool.

And there was another boost for City after the game as Guardiola ruled out a return to Barcelona despite interest from presidential candidates at the Catalan giants to bring the club's most successful ever coach back to the Camp Nou.

"I said many times, my period as a manager in Barcelona is over," said Guardiola, whose contract at the Etihad expires at the end of the season.

"I am incredibly happy here, still I have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing."

Chelsea hit their stride

Chelsea are also finding their form after a slow start to the season as Frank Lampard's men ran out 3-0 winners at Burnley to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games.

Hakim Ziyech was handed his first Premier League start after scoring in a 4-0 Champions League win away to Krasnodar in midweek and the Moroccan's shot wrong-footed Nick Pope to open the floodgates for the visitors on 26 minutes.

Kurt Zouma's bullet header then doubled Chelsea's advantage from Mason Mount's corner just after the hour mark.

Timo Werner was due to be rested until an injury in the warm-up to Christian Pulisic forced the German international into Lampard's line-up.

And Werner rounded off an excellent second-half performance from the Blues with a fine finish from Ziyech's pass.

After much criticism of his side's defending, Lampard will be equally delighted at a fourth straight clean sheet as Chelsea moved up to fourth place.

Both teams are on 12 points from 13 matches and need a win to keep hopes alive for a spot in the playoffs.

RR are coming into the match after a superb win against Kings XI Punjab so they will look to make most of the winning momentum. In terms of net run-rate, Rajasthan (-0.377) are also better than Kolkata (-0.467) so a victory will be crucial in their efforts to make it to the playoffs.

KKR suffered defeats in their previous two matches which seriously dented their chances of securing a top four spot. A positive result on Sunday and the team will end up with 14 points but they will have to wait for other match results to go in their way. The net run-rate is a significant factor and KKR's number is lower than all teams except Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2020: KXIP's Chris Gayle fined 10 percent of match fee for flinging bat after missing out on ton against RR

Dubai: West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has been fined for throwing his bat in frustration after missing out on a record-extending seventh IPL century by one run.

Chris Gayle has scored three half-centuries in six innings this year for Punjab, who are fourth in the eight-team table. Sportzpics

The 41-year-old, who became the first batsman in Twenty20 history to hit 1,000 sixes during his knock of 99 for Kings XI Punjab, was fined 10 percent of his match fee for a "code of conduct" violation, said an Indian Premier League statement.

"Mr Gayle admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction," it added.

The statement did not give details of his action, but throwing bats and other equipment normally comes under this offence.

The left-hander was bowled in the final over by Rajasthan Royals' Jofra Archer after his 66-ball blitz that included eight sixes.

Gayle then flung his bat, which hit the ground and bounced away. He appeared to apologise to the umpire before walking off.

Punjab went down by seven wickets to the Royals and must win their final game on Sunday to stand a chance of reaching the IPL playoffs.

Gayle has scored three half-centuries in six innings this year for Punjab, who are fourth in the eight-team table.

IPL 2020: We'll try to finish on winning note and hopefully sneak into fourth position, says KXIP captain KL Rahul

Abu Dhabi: Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul is hoping to "sneak" into the playoffs of the hotly-contested 13th Indian Premier League on the fourth position.

Having suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Friday, KXIP are currently placed fourth in the standings followed closely by RR and Kolkata Knight Riders with equal numbers of wins and points.

KXIP are scheduled to play Chennai Super Kings in their last league engagement on Sunday.

"We'll try finishing on a winning note and hopefully sneak in on the number four position," Rahul said at the post-match press conference after the game against RR.

While Rahul did not mean to take anything away from Rajasthan Royals' win, he said dew played a big part in the outcome and that his bowlers would need to operate better with the wet ball.

"We did discuss before the game. It was an important game for us. If I would've won the toss, I would've chosen to bowl as well because we expected dew later.

"We've seen dew so many times in IPL as well as international cricket. Our bowlers have done really well this season and one game doesn't change much. We must keep our heads high and come back stronger in the next game.

"One of the big reasons why the Royals could bat their way was the dew factor. Not taking anything away from their batsmen. They did put pressure on our bowlers and used the powerplay efficiently.

"Every batsman who came in started striking the ball and hitting boundaries. It worked for them and dew was a big reason behind that," he added.

The KXIP skipper called the swashbuckling Chris Galyle an "inspirational" figure who keeps the dressing room positive. The Jamaican made a sparkling 99 in his latest outing.

"Gayle is a huge part of our dressing room. Not only because of his consistency but to have somebody like that is very inspiring. He keeps the dressing room positive and there's a lot of fun happening when Chris is batting.

"No one will say he's 41. He still looks like the Gayle when he first burst out in the IPL," Rahul said.

Rajasthan Royals' Rahul Tewatia said the back-to-back wins - against defending champions Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab - showed the team's character.

"We have a strong batting unit and everyone is playing with responsibility. Earlier, we used to lose wickets in the powerplay. Now, every player is taking responsibility.

"We're clicking with the bat and wins against MI and KXIP show the character of the team," Tewatia said at the post-match presser.

He praised the recent performances of Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson - both shone in the game against KXIP and ensured Gayle's blazing knock went in vain.

"Our top order is scoring runs and our middle order also looks stronger. Everyone is taking responsibility and that's showing in the results. Our coach had also told us to show intent and deliver our 100 percent on the field.

"Ben Stokes is giving us good starts and Sanju Samson is also delivering strong performances with the bat," he said.

Tewatia, who took a fine catch to send back Nicholas Pooran, lauded his side's fielding.

"Fielding is all about confidence and we've been working hard in practice sessions too. We adjusted well according to the lights and put up a strong fielding performance.

"Ben Stokes is one of our best fielders and he took a brilliant catch to boost our morale. Talking about my catch, I was at the boundary line and I jumped at the right time to pull it off," he said.

Cyprus Open: Shubhankar Sharma recovers from early setbacks to shoot 66, rises to sixth place

Paphos: Playing almost at the crack of dawn, Indian ace Shubhankar Sharma recovered from early setbacks to rise to sixth place after finishing with 5-under 66 at the halfway stage of the inaugural Cyprus Open.

It was his best round since November 2019, when he shot a 64 on the final day of the Turkish Airlines Open, where he finished tied 7th.

At 9-under, Shubhankar was two shots behind the leaders, Jamie Donaldson, who still had one hole from second round to play, and Marcus Armritage, who had three holes left at the stunning Aphrodite Hills Resort.

Meanwhile, India's other challenger, SSP Chawrasia (71-70), at 1-under, will miss the cut, which will likely fall at 3-under.

Sharma, who had a mid-afternoon finish on the first day, had a horrific bogey-bogey start after a flawless first round.

He steadied himself to an extent and made no more bogeys and instead had a birdie and an eagle on front nine followed by five birdies on the back nine.
Sharma, who sits 151st on the Race to Dubai, needs a few solid results to have a chance to get to DP World Championship.

"I think (the two bogeys at the start) actually made me focus. I was joking with my friend who is on the bag that it opened my eyes I had an early tee off today and was a little sleepy on the first two holes," Sharma said.

"The first wasn't an unforced error. I had a great shot which landed two feet from the pin, it rolled off the green and I missed the up and down from there.
"I made a stupid bogey on the second, but after the second I told my friend (on the bag) I'm playing too well to let this put me down.

"We set a target for ourselves, we wanted to finish 10-under for the first two days. We just came up one shy, but that helped me refocus and put things into perspective."

Sharma, who has struggled so far this season with a best result of tied 26 at ASI Scottish Open earlier, said he has noticed an improvement in his iron play in recent weeks.

"It was a tough start to the year. I was really struggling to find my rhythm. My iron play wasn't and that is the strongest part of my game."

IPL 2020: 'We still need to do a bit to make the playoffs', says RR captain Steve Smith after win over KXIP

Abu Dhabi: A seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab ensured Rajasthan Royals maintained their new-found momentum in the ongoing IPL but skipper Steve Smith acknowledged they still "need to do a bit" for keeping their play-offs prospects alive.

A few days before Friday night's victory over KXIP, RR had beaten defending champions and this edition's in-from team, Mumbai Indians, by eight wickets.

Steve Smith was a happy man after his side notched up back-to-back wins but said they still have a job at hand as they face Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league match. Sportzpics

"The season has ebbed and flowed, yes. Would have been nice to have a couple of wins in the middle. We still need to do a bit to make the playoffs, and we need things to go our way," Smith said at the presentation ceremony.

"Having said that, if that happens, we are playing very good cricket," he added.

The Australian run-machine was a happy man after his side notched up back-to-back wins but said they still have a job at hand as they face Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league match.

On Sanju Samson's run-out on 48 against KXIP, Smith said, "It was unfortunate, but you take positives from every situation. It gave Jos (Buttler) a chance to bat after a five-day break. He hit them well so this is a good sign.

"Sanju started the tournament really well, then in the middle couldn't get going, but that is T20 cricket. You have got to keep trusting the process."

Ben Stokes was the star performer for the team as he smashed a breezy 50 and also claimed two wickets.

On the star England all-rounder, Smith said, "Ben is a class player, plays proper shots, hits balls in weird areas, and did a job with the ball too. One of the best in the world."

Stokes, who was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round show, said he came into the game with the same mentality as he did against Mumbai Indians.

"I think when you are in a position like we are, you have nothing to lose. We are still hanging in. That is pleasing. The sixes are always pleasing. I went in the same mentality like I did against MI. Wanted to go hard with the new ball," Stokes said.

"We had a decent break from the last game. We normally have a quick turnaround. I cut down on the bowling part in the break to remain fresh."

Alexis Vastine International: Boxers Amit Panghal, Sanjeet strike gold; Kavinder Bisht secures silver

New Delhi: World silver-medallist Amit Panghal (52kg) and Sanjeet (91kg) struck gold in their first competition after a coronavirus-forced break, claiming the top honours at the Alexis Vastine International Boxing Tournament in Nantes, France.

Amit, also an Asian Games champion, defeated American Rene Abraham 3-0 with a dominating performance.

Sanjeet, a former India Open gold-medallist, too put up a clinical show to get past Frenchman Soheb Bouafia in his summit clash and secure a gold.

However, Asian silver-medallist Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg) settled for a silver medal after going down to local favourite Samuel Kistohurry in a split 2-1 verdict.

India had earlier secured three bronze medals through four-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (63kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg). All three of them lost in the semifinal stage.

This was the first international competition that Indian boxers featured in since the Olympic qualifiers in Jordan in March.

In that event, nine Indians – five men and four women – qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, postponed to next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indians' competition calendar as well as training schedule has been severely hampered by the shutdown that followed the spread of the pandemic which has caused a bar a on sparring at the national camp.

The Indians are currently on a 52-day training trip to Europe during which they have been primarily based in Assisi, Italy. The boxers and their support staff left for the trip on 15 October.

Formula 1 proposes record 23 races for 2021 season, including one in Saudi Arabia

Imola: Formula One has put a brave face on the coronavirus pandemic by publishing a proposed programme on Friday of a record 23 Grand Prix for the 2021 season, including one in Saudi Arabia.

The previous record for races in a season stands at 21. Twenty-two races were slated for 2020 but the pandemic reduced that to 17.

The programme reveals several sets of three races in successive weekends, something which is likely to stretch the teams.

"It would represent a huge job for the mechanics," said Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull.

"This is 23 weeks away from home. We are approaching saturation point at which we would need two teams," said the Briton.

While the drivers would need to be at every race, other teams are also thinking of switching their mechanics.

"We hope to set up a rotation system so that no one has to go to all the races," said Williams team principal Simon Roberts.

His AlphaTauri counterpart, Franz Tost, is of a similar mind while Guenther Steiner of Haas suspects that coronavirus will have the final say yet again.

"There is a chance, with the pandemic, that races will be cancelled," said Steiner.

"Twenty-three GPs, it would be hard for the teams. If it continues, we will have to find solutions such as shorter weekends."

Two-day GPs, as is the case with this weekend's race in Imola with a single free practice session on Saturday morning instead of three on Friday and Saturday, are the options proposed by Red Bull driver Alexander Albon and championed by Horner.

The sport has already come under close scrutiny over the staging of a GP in Bahrain and the addition of Saudi Arabia is sure to raise the volume of dissent from human rights watchers.

While most preferred to claim ignorance of the subject on Friday, world champion Lewis Hamilton spoke of sport in general as "a powerful platform to initiate change".

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto also spoke of the "power of unity" and "change" that sport can have.

Horner said he had confidence in the governing bodies of F1 (its promoter Liberty Media, and the International Automobile Federation) to "make the right decisions".

"Whatever their decision, we will be there," he said.

Bundesliga: Schalke's winless run extends to 22 games after 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart

Berlin: Schalke‘s long wait for a win stretched to 22 games after letting Stuttgart come back to draw 1-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Malick Thiaw put the Gelsenkirchen-based club in front for the first time this season, but a penalty from Nicolás González earned the visitors a point and extended Schalke’s club-record run without a victory.

Schalke scored through a set-piece in the 30th minute, when 19-year-old Finnish defender Malick peeled free at the far post to head in Amine Harit’s free kick for his first Bundesliga goal.

Stuttgart had looked more like scoring, however. The visitors had to wait 10 minutes into the second half before they were awarded a penalty through VAR. Schalke defender Salif Sané blocked Nicolás González’s header with his outstretched arm, and González stepped up to equalize from the spot in the 56th.

Stuttgart remained the better side. Schalke goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow prevented defeat with a late save to deny Gonzalo Castro.

New Schalke coach Manuel Baum remained winless after his fourth game in charge. Schalke have nine draws and 13 defeats since their last win on 17 January.

Only Tasmania Berlin went longer without a win in the Bundesliga — 31 games — but Tasmania is widely acknowledged as the worst team to have played in the league and had been promoted in 1965 only for political reasons.
