IPL 2020: Rajasthan Royals batsman Robin Uthappa spotted applying saliva on ball during KKR game

Dubai: In a violation of the ICC's COVID-19 protocol, India and Rajasthan Royals batsman Robin Uthappa was seen applying saliva on the ball while fielding against Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL match in Dubai.

The incident happened right after Uthappa dropped a Sunil Narine skier in the fifth ball of the third over on Wednesday. He was seen applying saliva after collecting the ball at the mid-on region and the video of it has since gone viral on social media.

The IPL has not issued any statement on the incident so far.

The ICC banned the use of saliva to shine the ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic in June this year.

"If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning," it had stated in its Standard Operating Procedure for the game.

"A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommenced," the ICC notification read.

Defending 175, Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by 37 runs to jump to second spot in the ladder with back-to-back wins.

Tokyo Olympics 2020-bound boxer Amit Panghal used lockdown to work on tackling taller opponents

When the national camp for India’s top boxers began at Patiala’s NIS in August after nearly six months of them training by themselves due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was a catch: they could not spar or get into the ring.

In a year where little has been anywhere close to normal, Amit Panghal, one of India’s best contenders for winning a medal in the boxing ring at the Tokyo Olympics next year, has managed to salvage the down time by fine-tuning his technique.

Panghal was among the nine Indian boxers to have sealed a quota for the now-deferred Tokyo Olympics in March at the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers.

“This year after sealing qualification, I got the opportunity to work on my shortcomings as a boxer,” Panghal told Firstpost. “In my weight class, I usually have to face off against taller boxers. So I have been working on negating the opponent’s reach during boxing bouts. I also thought that I needed more power in my punches, even during the World Championships (where he won silver). I worked on that as well.”

But how does a boxer work on limiting the reach of taller boxers?

“The easiest way to negate taller boxers is to get as close to them as possible. That way you can free your arms and throw punches, but their arms get cramped,” he said, before adding that the best boxers in his weight class hail from Uzbekistan or Cuba.

And how does a boxer increase the power of their punches?

“You can do that by training with boxers who compete in one weight class higher than yours. That’s how you get used to taking their punches and fighting more powerful boxers. But since the lockdown, I’ve trained a lot against punching bags,” he added.

Panghal is certain that despite the half-a-year spent without sparring and competitions, Indian boxers will do very well at Tokyo 2020.

“We’ll be better boxers by the time the Olympics happen. I think it will benefit us at the Olympics,” he said. “It wasn’t just the Indian boxers who were confined to our homes at the start of the lockdowns across the world. No one in the world was able to train fully.”

When staying home, Panghal said, he used the time to focus on maintaining his fitness. “During the lockdown, from very early on, I focussed on maintaining my fitness. I used my morning sessions only on fitness drills. I didn’t do any boxing in mornings. And then evenings were reserved for boxing sessions.”

Panghal said the federation and coaches were planning to send boxers who have qualified for Tokyo Olympics and their sparring partners abroad for a month-long training camp, but said he didn’t know what country they would be going to.

Indian Army jawan killed, another injured as Pakistan resorts to heavy firing along LoC in J&K’s Poonch

Jammu: An Army jawan was killed and another injured when Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and resorted to heavy firing and mortar shelling in forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, officials said on Thursday.

The Pakistan Army initiated the unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing from small arms and intense shelling of mortars along the LoC in the Mankote and Krishna Ghati sectors on Wednesday night, a defence spokesperson said.

The Indian Army retaliated in a befitting manner, he added.

Lance Naik Karnail Singh was killed in the firing from across the border, the spokesperson said.

"The general officer commanding of the White Knight Corps and all ranks salute braveheart Lance Naik Karnail Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in the Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district on the night of 30 September, and offer condolences to his family," he said.

According to reports, another jawan was injured in the firing in the Krishna Ghati sector and has been hospitalised.

Pakistan has been targeting the hamlets in Poonch for the last five days, resulting in injuries to several animals due to shelling on Tuesday. The Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire 47 times in September.

An Army personnel was killed and two others, including an officer, were injured on 5 September as Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by using heavy fire and mortar shells along the LoC in the Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, officials said.

On 2 September, one JCO was killed in yet another ceasefire violation by the Pakistan Army in the Keri sector of Rajouri.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James breeze past Miami Heat in Game 1 of Finals

Miami: LeBron James finally got an easy Game 1 in the NBA Finals.

A very easy one, at that.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points in his finals debut, James had 25 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists and the Los Angeles Lakers rolled past the Miami Heat 116-98.

The Heat left beaten and battered.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 13 points, Danny Green had 11 and Alex Caruso finished with 10 for the Lakers. They returned to the finals for the first time in a decade and sent a very clear message. James’ teams had been 1-8 in Game 1 of past finals, with losses in each of the last seven openers.

Not this one.

“We kind of picked it up on both ends of the floor," Davis said.

Jimmy Butler fought through a twisted left ankle to score 23 points for Miami. The Heat lost point guard Goran Dragic at halftime to a left foot injury and saw All-Star centre Bam Adebayo leave in the third quarter after apparently aggravating a left shoulder problem.

Kendrick Nunn scored 18 points for the Heat, Tyler Herro had 14 and Jae Crowder 12. Adebayo was held to eight points in 21 minutes, and Miami went with subs for a fourth-quarter burst that turned a total rout into something only slightly more palatable in terms of final margin.

Game 2 is Friday night (local time).

The Lakers did whatever they wanted. They outrebounded Miami 54-36, led by as many as 32 points, and made 15 3-pointers - a big number for a team that doesn’t necessarily count on piling up that many points from beyond the arc. They’re 21-3 this season when making at least 14 3s.

The only stretch that provided hope for Miami came in the first six minutes. The Heat scored on six consecutive possessions in what became a 13-0 run to take a 23-10 lead midway through the opening period.

So, the first six minutes were fine for Miami.

Everything else was all Lakers.

The simplest way to sum up what happened over the rest of the opening half is this: Lakers 55, Heat 25. The Lakers came into Game 1 ranked 21st out of the 22 teams that spent time in the bubble from 3-point range, making only 33.6 percent of their tries from deep at Disney. They were the only team in the postseason to have two games shooting less than 25 percent on 3s.

Perhaps they were due. The Lakers went 9-for-11 on 3’s in the final 16 minutes of the first half. Of the nine Lakers who played in the first two quarters, eight tried a 3-pointer — and all eight made at least one.

They closed the first quarter on a 19-3 run. Herro banked in a 3 from a sharp angle for a 43-41 Miami lead with 7:33 left in the half, and then the Lakers took off again, this time on a 24-5 burst to go into the break with a 65-48 lead.

And if things weren’t already bad enough for Miami, the Heat determined at the half that Dragic — playing in his first finals game — couldn’t keep going in Game 1 because of a left foot injury.

The Lakers started the third on another run, this one 18-3, and the rout was officially underway.

Tip-ins

Heat: Butler turned his left ankle in the final seconds of the first half, remained in the game and started the second half. ... It was the 19th time that Miami lost a game this season after leading by double digits at some point.

Lakers: The Lakers improved to 17-15 in Game 1s of title series. ... Davis was 10 for 10 from the foul line, plus added nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

James' records

The NBA Finals record book is basically a James scrapbook of career achievements, and he raised his spot on some of those lists Wednesday. He became the seventh player to appear in 50 NBA Finals games (he could climb all the way to a tie for third on that list if this series goes seven games) and passed Michael Jordan and George Mikan for fifth in finals free throws made.

The Heat fell to 1-5 in Game 1 of title series. All three of Miami’s championships have come after dropping the opener.

IPL 2020: Test of character for Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians as teams look to move on from heart-breaking losses

Abu Dhabi: Coming off heart-breaking losses, the Indian Premier League game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will be a test of character for both sides as they look to regain momentum here on Thursday.

KXIP were at the receiving end of the highest successful run-chase in the tournament history as Rajasthan Royals overhauled a target of 224 with three balls to spare on Sunday.

While Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan led a remarkable fight-back, chasing 202, before Mumbai went down to Royal Challengers Bangalore in a Super Over.

KXIP have failed to tighten the screws when it mattered most. In their two losses, they were in a good position but could not grab the moments. Sportzpics

Defending champions Mumbai Indians lost their opening game but bounced back to beat Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Rohit Sharma's men failed to cross the line against RCB.

Similarly, after losing to Delhi Capitals in their opener, KXIP came back strongly to register their first points by defeating RCB. But, despite a fabulous batting display, they lost to Rajasthan.

KXIP have failed to tighten the screws when it mattered most. In their two losses, they were in a good position but could not grab the moments.

Their bowling looked out of sorts against Rajasthan as they failed to defend a big total with Rahul Tewatia hitting pacer Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over to win the match for his team.

Even Mohammed Shami (3/53), who has been in brilliant form prior to that onslaught, was taken to the cleaners. Barring an economical spell by leggie Ravi Bishnoi (0/34), the other KXIP bowlers had an off day against Rajasthan.

Skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have made inspiring starts this season, hitting a century and a fifty each, and getting the duo out early will be the key for Mumbai.

Against Rajasthan, the pair shared a 183-run opening stand with Agarwal scoring his maiden ton while Rahul, fresh from recording the highest score by an Indian in IPL history, hit a 54-ball 69.

Mumbai Indians are blessed with a splendid batting firepower with the likes of Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the top-order, followed by the big-hitting Pollard and Hardik Pandya.

A major cause of concern for them will be pace ace Jaspirt Bumrah's inconsistency. The speedster has picked up only three wickets in as many games and has failed to make the kind of impact that is expected from a bowler of his calibre.

Mumbai, though, will have the psychological advantage having played a game in Abu Dhabi before.

The squads (From):

Kings XI Punjab: KL Rahul (c), Mayank Agarwal, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Shami, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair, James Neesham, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Ishan Porel, Arshdeep Singh, Murugan Ashwin, Krishnappa Gowtham, Harpreet Brar, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh, Darshan Nalkande, Ravi Bishnoi, Simran Singh (wk), Jagadeesha Suchith, Tajinder Singh, Hardus Viljoen.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (C), Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Chris Lynn, Dhawal Kulkarni, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, James Pattison, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohsin Khan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Prince Balwant Rai, Quinton De Kock, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Tiwary, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult.

Match starts at 7.30 pm IST.

Serie A: Gomez's brace leads Atlanta to 4-1 win over Lazio; five-goal Inter beat Benevento

Milan: Alejandro Darío Gómez scored twice as Atalanta overpowered Lazio 4-1 in Rome while Serie A title rivals Inter Milan crushed promoted Benevento 5-2 on Wednesday.

The two scheduled season-opening matches had been pushed back because of Atalanta and Inter's European campaigns in August.

And the two northern rivals gave a demonstration of their firepower which they hope will deny Juventus a 10th consecutive Serie A title, with the champions settling for a point at Roma on Sunday.

Atalanta and Inter are now both top of the Serie A table alongside Napoli, Hellas Verona, and AC Milan with a maximum of six points from two games.

Juve have four points before they host Napoli on Sunday.

Atalanta were three goals up at half-time with Robin Gosens, Hans Hateboer, and Gomez all scoring, and avoided last season's slip-up where Lazio came back from three goals down to draw 3-3.

"We all knew what had happened last time and we talked about it at half-time," said Netherlands defender Hateboer.

"We knew that when they score a goal they could score others, but when they scored we got the fourth and closed it."

Felipe Caicedo pulled a goal back for Lazio after 57 minutes but Gomez scored his second goal just after the hour mark.

"The squad is the same (as last season) and this is a strength," added Hateboer of his side who finished fourth last campaign.

"But it's too early to talk about the Scudetto."

Simone Inzaghi's Lazio have another tough fixture on Sunday when they host Inter.

"The defeat hurts and burns, but the performance was there," said Inzaghi. "The result does not reflect the match."

After their last-gasp 4-3 win over Fiorentina last weekend Antonio Conte's Inter achieved another big win over Benevento who had shocked Sampdoria 3-2 last time out.

Inter Milan's Romelu Lukaku scored twice, the first within 30 seconds, and Achraf Hakimi impressed on his debut start.

Hakimi, who has spent the past two seasons on loan from Real Madrid at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, unlocked the match with his acceleration down the right finding Lukaku to blast in the opener.

The Morocco international then set up Roberto Gagliardini to volley in after 25 minutes and Lukaku for Belgian's second just before the half-hour.

Hakimi got on the scoresheet three minutes before the break, catching the Benevento defence napping with Argentine Lautaro Martinez making it five with 20 minutes to play.

"I enjoy watching the team play like they did tonight, with incisive attacking moves," said Conte.

"The outright biggest source of satisfaction for a coach is to see that, no matter who's playing, the idea of the game doesn't change.

"We've got more options and we're a team that likes to play, that attacks and that creates lots and lots of chances.

"We've got to work more on our balance because today we also conceded two goals. But it seems that the new arrivals have slotted in rapidly to a tried-and-tested system from last season."

Arthur Vidal and Christian Eriksen also came close to scoring for last season's runners-up, the Dane rattling the crossbar late.

Gianluca Caprari scored for Benevento after 34 and 76 minutes.

"I'm very happy with how I have adapted to the team even if I still have to learn certain mechanisms," said Hakimi.

"Some moves are similar to those I did in Dortmund, I have the skills to play in this team.

"The teammates helped me a lot, and I'm learning quickly.

"The Scudetto? We are working towards this, we have a great team to fight for this goal."

Promoted La Spezia got their first-ever top-flight win, 2-0 against Udinese, despite being a man down for the final half an hour. Andrey Galabinov scored both goals.

"A historic result! With the head, pride and heart," the Ligurian club celebrated on Twitter.

German Super Cup: Joshua Kimmich's late strike propels Bayern Munich to title with victory over Borussia Dortmund

Munich: Bayern Munich claimed their fifth title of the year on Wednesday as a late Joshua Kimmich goal sealed their 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund to land the German Super Cup.

Hosts Bayern built a 2-0 lead with first-half goals by Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Mueller, only for Erling Braut Haaland to equalise early in the second half after Julian Brandt pulled a Dortmund goal back just before the break.

However, Kimmich settled the matter through sheer determination behind closed doors at the Allianz Arena.

His initial shot was saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Marwin Hitz but the rebound clipped Kimmich's boot and looped in for the winning goal eight minutes from time.

"Joshua is a classy player. The way he chipped that ball in," said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer in admiration.

Having had their record 23-match winning streak ended by a shock defeat at Hoffenheim on Sunday, Bayern bounced back with Kimmich leading the charge.

"As long as I have known him (Kimmich), his mentality is very special. He is well on his way to being one of those players who shape this club," Bayern head coach Hansi Flick told broadcaster ZDF.

Bayern have already won an eighth-straight Bundesliga title, the German Cup, Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup this year.

This is the fourth time in five years they have won the showcase match.

Sancho missing

Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki and England winger Jadon Sancho missed the flight to Munich with "a respiratory infection", the club said, but both tested negative on Monday for Covid-19.

Flick made five changes from the side which lost 4-1 at Hoffenheim.

Leroy Sane was sidelined by a knee injury, Leon Goretzka rested and Segre Gnabry started on the bench.

Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies moved up to the wing and Tolisso started in central midfield.

The Frenchman gave Bayern the lead when Robert Lewandowski put in a short cross from the right wing and Tolisso side-footed home on 18 minutes.

Mueller grabbed Bayern's second when he headed home after Davies floated in a cross on 32 minutes.

Brandt put Dortmund back in the game five minutes before the break when Benjamin Pavard's loose pass was snapped up by Marco Reus and Brandt finished the move.

It was 2-1 at the break, but Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier fired a golden chance over the bar early in the second half with just Manuel Neuer to beat.

Dortmund drew level when central midfielder Thomas Delaney slid a great pass into Haaland, who showed ice cool finishing to fire past Neuer on 55 minutes.

It was the 20-year-old's 19th goal in 22 games for Dortmund.

With time running out, Kimmich robbed Delaney of possession near the halfway line and sprinted clear with Lewandowski in support.

The pair exchanged passes and although Hitz saved the initial shot, the rebound looped over his head into the Dortmund goal after clipping Kimmich's boot.

The Super Cup was the final game for Bundesliga referee Bibiana Steinhaus, 41, the first female to officiate in one of Europe's top leagues, before retirement.

LaLiga: Real Madrid miss Hazard as Vinicius sneaks narrow win over Valladolid

Madrid: Real Madrid missed the creativity of the injured Eden Hazard as only a fortuitous goal from substitute Vinicius Junior earned them a 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid in LaLiga on Wednesday.

Vinicius capitalised on some chaotic defending in the Valladolid penalty area after coming on for Luka Jovic, Madrid's misfiring striker who was committed but ultimately fruitless again in front of goal.

"We know we have to improve and we are going to," said Zinedine Zidane.

Jovic could yet be allowed to leave before the end of the transfer window on Monday and he must have looked on enviously as a simple chance fell to Vinicius to give Madrid their second win of the season.

But the lack of goals only served to highlight the absence of Hazard, who had been due to make his first appearance of the season only to pull out of the squad earlier on Wednesday with a muscle injury in his right leg.

Vinicius took advantage of a series of defensive errors from Valladolid to seal Madrid's win. Image courtesy: AFP

Hazard sat out Madrid's opening two games, with Zidane adamant the Belgium midfielder needed to be fully fit and completely pain-free from the troublesome ankle problem he struggled with in the last term.

Yet a separate injury means Hazard is now expected to be out for at least another two weeks, leaving Madrid to cope without their 100 million euros ($117 million) signing, just as they had to for prolonged periods during his opening year.

"It's a little thing," said Zidane. "I don't know if it will be days or weeks but it isn't much."

With Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez gone, the attacking onus will fall on the likes of Vinicius, even if Zidane preferred to start with the Brazilian on the bench and give Jovic another chance to impress alongside Karim Benzema.

"We lacked a bit of rhythm, we needed to the move the ball faster," added Thibaut Courtois.

"If you don't move the ball fast, it's easy for them to defend. In the second half, we were better."

Jovic, who has scored only two goals since joining from Frankfurt for 60 million euros in July 2019, could not be faulted for a lack of effort and was arguably Madrid's busiest attacking player in the first half.

But two good chances went begging and Zidane finally brought on Vinicius just before the hour.

Seven points from nine continue a solid start for the reigning champions, with Barcelona due to play away at Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Earlier, Atletico Madrid followed up their 6-1 thrashing of Granada on Saturday with a much less spectacular goalless draw away at Huesca.

Valladolid are still without a victory after four games, having only managed draws at home to Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.

Jovic was involved early for Madrid, his driving run down the left giving Marcelo a sight of goal, before a speedy counter-attack ended with Fede Valverde sliding the ball across, but he fired over.

Jovic lashed into the side-netting after some good work by Luka Modric and then saw a header saved early in the second half, with Casemiro smashing the rebound against the crossbar.

With the game in the balance, Valladolid sniffed an opportunity. Waldo Rubio dragged wide from close range and then Shon Weissman raced forward and forced Courtois into a smart save.

But as the visitors were gaining in confidence, Madrid struck, Vinicius taking advantage of a string of defensive errors, the last committed by Bruno, his attempted clearance falling to the feet of the 20-year-old, who made no mistake.

Raul Garcia and Waldo went close to an equaliser before Modric hit the post late on.

Liverpool stars back Neco Williams after defender gets abused on social media

Liverpool: Liverpool stars including Virgil van Dijk have backed Neco Williams after the young defender received social media abuse.

Williams was criticised online after losing possession in the build-up to Lincoln's first goal during Liverpool's 7-2 League Cup win last week.

The 19-year-old Wales international has since stopped using his official Twitter account.

But Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said on Wednesday the highly-rated Williams knows he has the backing of his team-mates, including Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's League Cup fourth-round tie against Arsenal, Lijnders said, "It is not for me to comment on social media.

"The only thing I can say is abuse is wrong - through social media, on the street, it is wrong. Second, you are not a Liverpool supporter if you don't support.

Neco Williams (left) was criticised online after losing possession in the build-up to Lincoln's first goal during Liverpool's 7-2 League Cup win last week. Image credit: AFP

"Trent (Alexander-Arnold) spoke with him (Williams), Virgil spoke with him, Robbo (Andrew Robertson) spoke with him - so it's not only Jurgen or me.

"It's how we take care of each other and that's what makes us different."

Lijnders, standing in for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at the press conference, added, "Neco is a doer, and doers make mistakes. We don't want safe play, a player who doesn't take risks.

"Our game is based on everyone taking the initiative from each position, and that is what we want.

"One of the most important lessons for each young boy who is coming through, each player, is that it is a weakness if you can get caught up in praise and criticism. I think he dealt with it really well, to be honest."

League Cup: Manchester City, United breeze past Burnley, Brighton to reach quarter-finals; Everton also advance

London: Pep Guardiola admitted it was vital to keep a clean-sheet as League Cup holders Manchester City got back on track with a 3-0 win against Burnley, while Manchester United joined their rivals in the quarter-finals after beating Brighton 3-0 on Wednesday.

Guardiola's side suffered their heaviest home Premier League loss under the Spaniard on Sunday when Leicester handed them a humiliating 5-2 defeat.

A brace from Raheem Sterling at Turf Moor ensured they washed away some of that bitter taste from that defeat and Spanish forward Ferran Torres, a close-season signing from Valencia, added City's third goal with his first for the club.

"It was important we didn't concede and the team was good in general," Guardiola said.

"When you lose a game the most important thing is the next one. Firstly, because if you lose in this competition, you're out.

"We are still far away from our best because we're not training much. We have a lot of players out, six because of Covid and four injuries.

"But step by step when we have all the squad we will get better. We are in the quarter-finals of this competition again so it's good."

City have won the League Cup four times in the last five seasons and they remain on course to retain the trophy.

Guardiola's men would have won by an even bigger scoreline but for a fine display from Burnley keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne both started in a strong City side that also included Riyad Mahrez and a debut for 18-year-old midfielder Cole Palmer.

Sterling made the breakthrough 10 minutes before the interval with a powerful strike from Benjamin Mendy's cross.

The City forward doubled his tally on 49 minutes, finishing off a good move involving De Bruyne and Torres.

City put the result beyond doubt in the 65th minute when Sterling failed to control a Mahrez pass and the ball ran through for the 20-year-old Torres to slam past Peacock-Farrell.

'Never surprised'

At the Amex Stadium, Manchester United inflicted more misery on Brighton four days after beating them 3-2 in a dramatic Premier League game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side needed a 100th minute Bruno Fernandes penalty to see off Albion on that occasion and conceding an equaliser moments early.

There was less drama this time as United made 10 changes and Brighton nine, with Solskjaer's stand-ins proving far superior.

United, who last won the League Cup in 2017, took the lead in the 44th minute when Scott McTominay headed home from Juan Mata's free-kick.

United doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute, with Donny Van De Beek finding Spanish midfielder Mata, who showed slotted home his 50th goal for the club.

Paul Pogba came off the bench to score seven minutes later when his free-kick curled in via a deflection off Brighton's Joel Veltman.

"A great performance by Juan Mata. He was the one who got on the ball and calmed us down. He was composed. He more or less creates the first goal himself. I am never surprised when he plays like this," Solskjaer said.

"We needed the first 20-25 minutes to get our confidence and get on the ball. We have worked on set pieces. You keep a clean sheet and this is important for a back four."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a hat-trick as Everton thrashed West Ham 4-1, but the win was overshadowed by injuries to the Toffees' Brazilian stars Richarlison and Allan.

Calvert-Lewin put Everton ahead with his sixth goal of the season after 11 minutes after Goodison Park.

Carlo Ancelotti's side, who have won six consecutive matches in all competitions this season, were pegged back by Robert Snodgrass's 46th minute equaliser.

Richarlison restored Everton's lead 10 minutes later before Calvert-Lewin bagged his second treble already this season with goals in the 78th and 84th minute.

Newcastle survived a scare from fourth tier Newport before reaching the last eight with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win after their 1-1 draw.

IPL 2020: We were outplayed, no excuses from us, says Delhi Capitals' coach Ricky Ponting

Abu Dhabi: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting had no qualms in admitting that they were "outplayed" in all departments in the IPL game against Sunrisers Hyderabad and refused to blame the pitch, saying it played better when his team batted.

This was Delhi Capitals' first loss of the season. Chasing 163 for win and to maintain a clean slate, DC were restricted to 147 for seven at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday night.

Asked if the conditions made the difference in the game, Ponting insisted that SRH executed their plans better than his team.

"I don't think the conditions were that different. The grounds are bigger, there are bigger square boundaries here. (But) At the end of the day, we were just outplayed by Sunrisers Hyderabad," Ponting said at the post-match press conference.

"We were a little bit off from our absolute best. SRH had good top-order partnerships and they rotated the strike well, and a few of them made big scores. So, that was the difference in the game," the Australian great added.

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by a stellar bowling effort from Rashid Khan as Sunrisers Hyderabad opened their account in the 13th edition of the league.

Speaking about Delhi Capitals' top-order batsmen, Ponting said, "If you have one of those batsman that go on and make a big score, like if one of those guys goes on and gets a 60 or 70 plus score, then we probably win the game.

"When we look back now, we were only 15 runs away at the end of the game. So, you can break that down in any way that you want."

"At the Delhi Capitals, we don't sit back and blame any one person, we lost the game as a team."

Even though captain Shreyas Iyer, who opted to field after winning the toss, said after the game that the wicket had become two-paced in the second innings, Ponting believed that the conditions were better when DC batted.

"Visually today, it looked like a really good wicket. A little bit of grass on it, it was nice and hard. As we saw (with) the new ball, there wasn't a lot of bounce," he said.

"Warner and Bairstow played the conditions really well early on. They got the boundaries when they needed to, ran the twos exceptionally well," added Ponting.

"The wicket might have been slightly better in the second innings which is disappointing for us, having won the toss and deciding to chase.

"We felt there might be a bit of dew in the ground and having just walked the outfield now, there was dew, so no excuses from us. We were outplayed."

Ponting also heaped praise on DC's lead pacer Kagiso Rabada, who continued to impress by taking two wickets.

"He's just the ultimate competitor. He loves pitting himself against some of the best batsmen in the world. He has performed exceptionally well for the Delhi Capitals," the former Australian captain said.

The Delhi Capitals head coach also added that the side had aimed to target SRH spinner Abhishek Sharma, but couldn't execute the plan well.

"We were looking to target Abhishek Sharma and he just snuck away from us a little bit. Rashid Khan dismissed Shreyas Iyer, which meant that Abhishek was able to get away with bowling to a new batsman.

"We targeted his third and fourth over but didn't get as many as we needed to. The game started to slip away from that moment. They executed their yorkers better than we did."

IPL 2020: Mustafizur Rahman regrets missing T20 league after postponement of Bangladesh's Sri Lanka tour

Dhaka: Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman rues missing out on playing in the IPL and the perks that come with it after the postponement of his national team's tour of Sri Lanka amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan had asked Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to reschedule the three-match Test series next month, as the board wasn't willing to comply with the 14-day quarantine rule proposed by the host nation in view of the pandemic.

"It would have been great to play the Test series. Sri Lanka's proposal to have us quarantined for 14 days didn't seem possible for us," Mustafizur was quoted by Cricbuzz.

"You can't sit in your room before such an important series, no matter how hard you train. BCB tried, but the 14-day quarantine is their law. I think we should respect it.

"If the BCB knew that the Sri Lanka series would be postponed, they would have given me the NOC (No Objection Certificate) for IPL. But whatever happens, happens for the best. I may have earned BDT (Bangladesh Taka) 1 crore had I played the IPL," he added.

The pacer was not given the NOC to take part in the IPL due to national commitments after Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders contemplated signing him.

The BCB had earlier refused to give Mustafizur NOC for taking part in the Pakistan Super League in 2015-16 due to injury concerns. The board had compensated him with BDT Taka 30 Lakh.

However, according to the website, BCB's Cricket Operations chairman Akram Khan has made it clear that the board would not give any compensation to him this time.

IPL 2020 LIVE Streaming RR vs KKR: When and where to watch Dream11 IPL on Disney + Hotstar and broadcast timings in India and UAE

A high on confidence Rajasthan Royals will look to continue their winning momentum when they face Kolkata Knight Riders in the 12th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday.

RR have enjoyed an electric start to their IPL 2020 campaign, winning both of their opening matches in some style. While they beat CSK by 16 runs after posting 216 runs on board batting first, Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia stole the limelight as the Jaipur-based franchise chased down a record target of 224 against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.

Tewatia, who was on 17 from 23 at one stage, had a dream outing against the Punjab franchise, going on to slam 53 runs off just 31 balls to perfectly set-up the platform for an RR win. He and Samson built a 61-run stand for the third wicket before the Kerala batsman was dismissed by Mohammed Shami. And although Tewatia and Riyan Parag were dismissed later on, the English duo of Jofra Archer and Tom Curran held their nerve to beat KXIP by four wickets.

Samson, who has scored 74 and 85 in the first two games, will continue playing an important role in RR’s batting lineup, and as always, much will be expected from him as well as skipper Steve Smith, who has also enjoyed a positive start with scores of 69 and 50.

Samson also has the best strike-rate (214.86) so far in IPL 2020, after aggregating 159 runs from the first two games. He also ranks fourth on the highest run-getters (159) list this season, behind CSK’s Faf du Plessis (173) and the KXIP duo of Mayank Agarwal (221) and KL Rahul (222).

Jos Buttler played his first game for RR this season against KXIP after serving his mandatory quarantine coming from England, and will be one to watch out for despite failing to impress in that clash.

The experienced pace duo of Archer and Jaydev Unadkat, however, are yet to fire, and will be hoping to make an impact in the game.

Meanwhile, KKR are coming off a thumping win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, as Shubman Gill’s knock of 70 propelled them to chase down 145 with two overs to spare.

KKR boast of Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell - two reliable batsmen who could be a threat for bowlers on their day. There were even talks of Russell being promoted up the order before the tournament, but the team management have so far not given any intention of doing so. Russell came out to bat at No 6 in the first game against Mumbai Indians, while KKR did not have to rely on him for the chase against SRH.

While Pat Cummins went wicketless for 49 runs in KKR’s contest against MI, he did pick up a wicket against SRH, finishing with figures of 1/19. It may be just the initial stages of the campaign, but Kuldeep Yadav has endured a silent start, remaining wicketless in the two matches.

IPL 2020: It is important to get our top four right, says Sunrisers skipper David Warner after maiden win

Abu Dhabi: Bolstered by the inclusion of Kane Williamson, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner is focussed on adding depth and power to his team's fragile middle-order as it moves forward in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by Williamson's 26-ball 41 and a stellar bowling effort from Rashid Khan as Sunrisers Hyderabad outplayed Delhi Capitals by 15 runs to open their account in the 13th IPL here on Tuesday.

"We were on track to get 170-180, there is talk of our middle order not being that good, but we put our game together against Delhi and we backed ourselves, we played fluently and we got ourselves a good total," Warner said at the virtual post-match press conference.

To strengthen SRH's batting, the seasoned Williamson was drafted in at the expense of Mohammad Nabi, but the skipper assured the Afghanistan all-rounder that he would again get his chances.

"It was a big call but, at the end of the day, if we get our top four batting right and back our bowlers, we will come good. For us, it is important to establish in the middle.

"Moving forward, Nabi will come in as well," said the prolific left-handed batsman, who shared a 77-run opening stand with Jonny Bairstow.

Defending 163, leg-spinner Rashid returned very impressive figures of 3/14, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped two wickets and T Natarajan and Khaleel Ahmed (1/43) chipped in with one apiece to restrict Delhi to 147 for seven.

Warner was full of praise for his strike bowler Rashid, who was named the Man of the Match.

"Rashid knows what he has to do, the way he delivered for us against Delhi was great. He knows what to do, he bowled stump to stump, he knew he had a big role against Delhi with young Abhishek (Sharma) at the other end.

"Abhishek bowled his four overs and he was just hit during his last over, an extra bit of pressure was added on Rashid and he was outstanding," said Warner.

SRH were asked to bat first after the coin landed in the favour of Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer.

"I think putting runs on the board, batting first was good, we lost the toss so obviously we had to bat first. I think Delhi bowled really well in the powerplay, they restricted me and Jonny.

"They executed really well in the powerplay, they had good fields for us, all in all, we had a good game...the way we approached it in the middle with Williamson coming, credit to our bowlers as well, especially the way they bowled in the middle," he added.

The match also saw Jammu and Kashmir's Abdul Samad making his IPL debut and Warner said he will look to encourage youngsters in the team.

During his brief stay in the middle, Samad smashed a six and a four to remain unbeaten on 12.

"It is great to give these young guys an opportunity because where else to show your talent when you can do it against the world's best. You need to have that belief that you can do well.

"We needed someone at the back end. We brought him in because we knew he bowls leg-spinners as well. We knew what he was capable of. He is a good power-hitter. I have seen him hit long balls and I was very impressed.

"The great thing about youth is enthusiasm and passion. They want to learn, they are really picking our brains and trying to get the upper edge. We want to play with freedom. Let them play calm and clear," Warner said.

IPL 2020: Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Abu Dhabi: Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer has been slapped with a fine of Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Tuesday.

"Delhi Capitals Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Dream11 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2020," an IPL release stated.

"As it was his team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh," it added.

Last week, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli was found guilty of his team maintaining a slow-over rate against Kings XI Punjab and was also fined Rs 12 lakh.

Iyer suffered his first defeat of the season as Delhi lost to Sunrisers by 15 runs at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.

Opener Jonny Bairstow's sublime fifty was complemented by a stellar bowling effort from spinner Rashid Khan as Sunrisers outplayed Delhi to open their account in the 13th edition of the league.

Chasing 163 to maintain a clean slate, Delhi were slow off the blocks and struggled to force the pace for a major part of their innings.

Premier League: Manchester City complete signing of Portuguese center back Ruben Dias from Benfica

Manchester: Manchester City completed the signing of center back Rúben Dias as their third addition of the summer transfer window on Tuesday.

City did not disclose financial details but Benfica had already announced on Sunday that it was selling Dias to the Premier League club for €68 million ($78 million).

Dias signed a six-year contract with City.

“They have been the dominant team in England over the last few years, playing an attacking brand of football which I feel suits my own game,” Dias said. “It is really exciting to be part of such a talented squad and to play for a world-class manager like Pep Guardiola, who has a proven track record of developing young players like myself.

“I believe I can improve here, at a club whose ambitions match my own and I will give everything to be successful and win titles.”

Despite signing Nathan Ake for £40 million ($46 million) during the offseason as a backup to left-sided center back Aymeric Laporte, City remained in the hunt for a right-sided center half to effectively replace Vincent Kompany, who left the club in 2019.

John Stones and Eric Garcia played in that position in City’s two league games so far this season, but both players’ futures are uncertain. Garcia has been linked with a return to Barcelona, while Stones was largely frozen out of the team last season.

The 23-year-old Dias, a tall and strong defender comfortable with the ball at his feet, has played 19 times for Portugal. He has established himself as a regular with the national team after being a squad member at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Dias came through the Benfica academy, joining its senior squad in 2015. He was captain for his final game for the team, against Moreirense on Saturday, and embraced his teammates and sporting director Rui Costa after the final whistle in a signal that he was about to leave.

Lionel Messi attempts to put his dispute with FC Barcelona behind, says it is time for club to unite

Barcelona: Lionel Messi wants to put his dispute with FC Barcelona behind him and has called for the club and its fans to unite.

In only his second interview since unsuccessfully pushing for a transfer in the off-season, Messi said Barcelona will be stronger if everyone works together to help the club succeed.

"After so many disagreements, I would like to put an end to it all," he told the Daily Sport. "We must unite as Barcelona fans and believe that the best is yet to come."

In an interview that will be published in its entirety on Wednesday, Messi said that the only way for the club to reach its goals is to keep united and rowing in the same direction.

Messi told Barcelona he wanted to leave after the team's 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in August, but he ended up staying to avoid a legal battle with the club of my life.

Messi has continued to criticise club officials since deciding to stay. He has said that he did not like the direction that the club was heading.

"I'll take responsibility for my mistakes," he said. "If they happened, it was with the intention of making Barcelona better and stronger.

Messi said he wanted to send a message to club members and fans, saying, "If at any time I upset some of them for something I did or said, they shouldn't doubt that it was always thinking about the best for the club."

Messi scored a goal in Barcelona's 4-0 win over Villareal in its Spanish league opener on Sunday. Barcelona visit Celta Vigo for their second league match on Thursday.

LaLiga: Angel Rodriguez strikes twice to help Getafe grab top spot with victory over Real Betis

Madrid: Getafe jumped to the top of LaLiga on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory at home to Betis, dislodging Valencia who had moved into first earlier in the evening.

Both Getafe and Valencia have seven points after the opening games in the fourth round of the Liga season.

Two teams playing on Wednesday, including Real Madrid who welcome Valladolid, can also reach seven. Celta Vigo, who end the midweek fixtures at home to Barcelona on Thursday, can reach eight points.

Getafe had only scored once in their opening two games but struck three times in the first half against Betis, who started the day as league leaders.

Angel Rodriguez put the visitors ahead with an overhead kick after 13 minutes.

Marc Cucurella added a second in the 39th minute and two minutes later Angel added a third with a cross shot.

Betis ended the match with 10 men after Aissa Mandi received a second yellow card in the 83rd minute.

In the early match, Valencia won 1-0 at Real Sociedad in a match the home team dominated.

Real Sociedad could also have gone top with a victory and dominated play but were frustrated by an impressive display from the visiting goalkeeper Jaume Domenech.

The hosts lost their fluency after changing four attacking players in a mass switch in the 67th minute.

Maxi Gomez finished off a rare Valencia counter-attack to score the winning goal from close range after 75 minutes.

"They had one chance and they won, while we did things right, playing football, but we didn't succeed," said Real Sociedad coach, Imanol Alguacil.

IPL 2020: Kolkata Knight Riders' batting firepower set to face stern test against marauding Rajasthan Royals

Dubai: Kolkata Knight Riders will have to bat out of their skin to stop a marauding Rajasthan Royals when the two teams clash in an IPL match at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday.

Having started off as underdogs, the Royals have taken the IPL by storm, chasing down the highest tournament total 224 against Kings XI Punjab in their last match.

In two wins from two matches, the Royals have got past the 200-mark with ease. In their success, they have found two stars in Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia, who have outshone marquee players.

Talented opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten half-century, aided by Morgan's late firepower overtook SRH's below-par 145 with two overs to spare in KKR's last match. Sportzpics

In his second coming at the Royals, little known Haryana all-rounder Tewatia has got instant stardom for his 31-ball 53 against KXIP, which helped the side chase down a record 224 with three balls to spare against KXIP.

Struggling to get off the blocks quickly, Tewatia, who was on 17 from 23 deliveries with the team needing 51 from the last three overs, suddenly woke up from the slumber, smacking left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over to turn the tables for RR.

But the season so far belongs to Samson— the wicketkeeper from Kerala.

Boasting of the season's highest strike-rate of 214.86, Samson has two successive half-centuries that has once again put him in contention for a longer rope in the Indian team as a keeper-batsman.

Skipper Steve Smith has been ever reliable, striking two half-centuries, while opener Jos Buttler will be waiting to explode.

To match or even surpass the Royals, KKR have the biggest stars in Andre Russell to go along with reigning World Cup winning English skipper Eoin Morgan, one of the best in limited-overs cricket.

But both Morgan and Russell have got limited opportunities so far, having dropped down to No 5 and 6 respectively.

The fixture might just finally see them bat higher up, especially the star Jamaican, who was their highest run-getter last season with 510 runs at a astonishing strike rate of 204.81.

Having started off with a familiar defeat to Mumbai Indians in their opener, Kolkata Knight Riders put up a determined show to bounce back against a sloppy Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Talented opener Shubman Gill's unbeaten half-century, aided by Morgan's late firepower overtook SRH's below-par 145 with two overs to spare.

Come Wednesday, it may well be a run feast with no target 'safe' against the Royals.

Dubai has been host to both the Super-Over matches this season. The venue will be an unchartered territory for both the teams who will be playing here for the first time this season.

For the record, the teams batting first have won all the five matches in Dubai so far.

Teams (from)

Kolkata Knight Riders: Dinesh Karthik (C and WK), Andre Russell, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Siddhesh Lad, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Eoin Morgan, Varun Chakravarthy, Tom Banton, Rahul Tripathi, Chris Green, M Siddharth, Nikhil Naik, Ali Khan.

Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith (captain), Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Manan Vohra, Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh, Oshane Thomas, Andrew Tye, David Miller, Tom Curran, Aniruddha Joshi, Shreyas Gopal, Riyan Parag, Varun Aaron, Shashank Singh, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Markande.

Match Starts at 7:30pm IST.

IPL 2020: Abu Dhabi conditions help Sunrisers Hyderabad prevail over Delhi Capitals

The two matches before the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals produced four scores more than 200, including the highest second-innings score in IPL history. Thus, when Hyderabad put a mere 162/4 on the scoreboard, Delhi were touted as the favourites. However, with its larger ground and slower pitch, Abu Dhabi provided challenges entirely different from the venues in Sharjah and Dubai. That, combined with sustained accurate bowling, helped Hyderabad ease to a 15-run win and secure their first points in this edition.

Unlike other editions, IPL 2020 will be played across a mere three venues, which meant that the pitches were bound to get slower as the tournament progressed. What was probably not expected was that it would happen this early. While the pitches at Sharjah and Dubai are still holding firm, teams will change their strategies and starting XIs in the subsequent matches in Abu Dhabi. Spinners, even batsmen who can fill in with a couple of overs of spin, may do the bulk of the bowling in days to come.

Rashid Khan starred for SRH with a three-wicket haul. Image courtesy: Pankaj Nangia / Sportzpics for BCCI

But let that not take the sheen off the bowling performance of Hyderabad, especially Rashid Khan and T Natarajan. They went in with exactly five specialist bowlers, with only Kane Williamson (and perhaps Abdul Samad) as back-ups. It was an enormous risk, for one bowler having an off day might have ruined everything for them.

Only that it did not happen. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck with his fifth ball. He conceded only seven runs in his two-over spell in the Powerplay overs. Then, Natarajan and Khaleel Ahmed stepped up, and Delhi struggled to only 34/1 after six overs. However, things were looking up towards the end of the powerplay, for Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer had upped the tempo, having scored 19 off the last two overs.

The match was evenly poised, and it had come down to how Delhi handled the Hyderabad spinners, Rashid and Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek’s first over set the tone. He bowled slow, straight, and full, restricting the batsmen to drives down the ground that fetched singles. It took Dhawan four balls to try to step out and force the pace, but it did not work.

With Abhishek turning out to be difficult to score off, it was clear that Rashid would pose a serious threat. Iyer tried to counter that by stepping out and going over the top. He ended up holing to deep extra cover. Abhishek and Rashid bowled three overs apiece, conceding 29 between them, almost sealing the match. Amidst all this, Rashid had Dhawan brilliantly caught by Jonny Bairstow.

Even in the next over, Abhishek conceded just three runs off the first four balls. Rishabh Pant ruined his otherwise excellent figures (3.4-0-22-0) by finishing the over with two sixes, but they came too late.

Then came the fourteenth over, where Natarajan bowled five yorkers. He would bowl five more in the 18th, including the wicket of Marcus Stoinis, demonstrating that he needs to be considered more seriously as a death bowler. With Bhuvneshwar and Rashid getting more wickets, the match was done.

It might have been a comprehensive win, but Hyderabad are yet to strike the right balance. Jonny Bairstow scored 53, the highest in the match, but it took him 48 balls. It was a scratchy innings where he hit just two fours and a six, and looked far from convincing.

With David Warner, Williamson, and Rashid as certainties, and Mohammad Nabi likely to play key roles as the pitch gets slower, Bairstow’s place in the XI does not look too certain. However, that will force them to get in a wicketkeeper – Wriddhiman Saha, probably – ahead of Priyam Garg, who has now not batted twice in a row. Nabi’s inclusion will also address that sixth bowler problem.

Delhi Capitals' experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan has failed to get going in IPL 2020 so far. Pankaj Nangia / Sportzpics for BCCI

Delhi’s issues lie elsewhere. The two sixes off Abhishek are the only ones Pant has hit in the tournament so far, and he is one of the most prolific six-hitters in IPL history. It is important for Delhi to allow Pant a free rein, for that is when he has always been at his best.

The other problem is at the top. Dhawan’s 69 runs in the tournament have come at a pedestrian strike rate of 115, and he is clearly not at his best yet. Unless he gets those boundaries flowing, Delhi’s powerplay scores may fall short of expectations. They do have a like-for-like replacement in Ajinkya Rahane, who may be someone they would want to consider.

Spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada, Delhi’s three-pronged pace attack looks potent, but with time they would have to draft in that third spinner to bowl in tandem with Amit Mishra and Axar Patel. Sandeep Lamichhane is an obvious choice.

If they have to opt for an Indian option in the absence of the injured R Ashwin, they may want to have a look at Delhi all-rounder Lalit Yadav, who has impressed with his boundary-hitting and economic off-breaks.

IPL 2020: Emotional Rashid Khan dedicates his Man of the Match award to late mother

Abu Dhabi: Sunrisers Hyderabad's main strike bowler Rashid Khan struggled to hold back tears, dedicating his Man of the Match performance against Delhi Capitals to his mother and biggest fan who died earlier this year.

Rashid's triple strike made all the difference, allowing Sunrisers to defend 162 for their first win of the IPL season on Tuesday.

"It has been a tough one-and-a half-years for me. First, my dad expired and then my mom (in June this year). And it took a bit of time for me to come back. My mom was my biggest fan, especially in the IPL and when I was the MoM, she would always talk to me through the night," recalled an emotional Rashid at the post-match presentation.

Rashid said he did not feel the pressure going into the field and reaped the benefits of bowling quicker than usual on a slow surface.

"I bowled quicker today, when I started and bowled my first ball, I realised it. You need two, three balls to know what the right pace is. In these conditions, you need to bowl back of a length to the batsmen.

"Warner (captain) always backs me and tells me that you know what's best for the team. Only when things aren't going my way I go and ask the captain what to do."

Losing skipper Shreyas Iyer said his team did not read the conditions well in their first game here.

"They outplayed us in all three departments and credit to them for that. 162 was a par score on this wicket. It was surprising and in the second innings, it (pitch) was two-paced. When I went in, the ball wasn't coming onto the bat. We thought dew would come on but we can't give any reasons at this moment," he said.

"We didn't execute the way we wanted to. Lot of learnings from this wicket and conditions. Ricky went in (during the time-out) and we needed one batsman to take a chance as the required rate was pretty high.

"The ground is very big and we didn't capitalize on taking doubles. We knew boundaries are big here and doubles will be key for us. It didn't work out for us, hopefully next time we can maximise the opportunities," he added.

League Cup: Jose Mourinho gets better of Frank Lampard as Tottenham see off Chelsea to reach quarter-finals

London: Jose Mourinho had just completed his third and final Tottenham substitution when Eric Dier sprinted off the field past him.

With Tottenham losing 1-0 to Chelsea on Tuesday, the manager chased after his midfielder into the dressing room.

“He wasn’t happy,” Dier said, "but there was nothing I could do about it, nature was calling.”

Tottenham were a goal down, a man down, and without their manager.

“I was just pushing him,” Mourinho said, “to come back as soon as possible.”

Dier was soon back on the pitch to help Mourinho see off his former side and reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup in his first full season with Tottenham.

First Erik Lamela had to equalize in the 83rd minute, cancelling out Timo Werner's first-half goal. Then, once the game went straight to penalties after 90 minutes, Tottenham scored all five spot kicks before Mason Mount hit the edge of the post with Chelsea's fifth.

Tottenham, who had a bye into the fourth round due to coronavirus cases at Leyton Orient, advanced 5-4 in the shootout to put Mourinho two wins from a first final with Tottenham.

Dier was named man of the match, and the award was proudly placed on the toilet for a social media photo. The last time Tottenham contested a penalty shootout — losing in the FA Cup to Norwich in March before the coronavirus shutdown last season — Dier ended up charging into the stands to confront a fan and being banned for four matches.

Tuesday's unexpected exit from the pitch had a better ending.

“After playing on Sunday and tonight it wasn’t easy,” Dier said.

The League Cup was the first trophy Mourinho collected as Chelsea manager in 2004 before sweeping back-to-back Premier League titles in that first spell in charge. Now Frank Lampard, who was so instrumental to Mourinho's success at Chelsea, is leading the west London club.

And the pair became involved in a brief heated exchange in the first half of a London derby that lacked some of the unusual intensity with fans locked out of the stadium due to the pandemic,

Lampard had asked why Mourinho spends more time speaking to the referee than his own players.

“I think he was feeling the sense of the first half and how it was,” Lampard said.

It was a first half when Tottenham played without a recognisable striker in the lineup as Mourinho copes with the demands of this being his team's third game in five days — with another to come on Thursday.

With nine changes from the side that was held by Newcastle on Sunday, Tottenham was completely overwhelmed by an expansively reshaped Chelsea side.

It was one of Tottenham's new signings at fault for the opener on his debut. Left back Sergio Reguilón gave the ball and Werner had the space to strike past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 19th minute for his first goal since joining from Leipzig for around $60 million.

But Reguilón, who was signed from Real Madrid, showed his attacking prowess down the left flank in a second half. Tottenham were transformed, showing the threat missing before the break, with Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg having to be deployed.

Shortly after Dier's toilet pit stop, Reguilón made amends for his first-half mix-up. The Spaniard chipped the ball over for Erik Lamela, who got ahead of Emerson Palmieri to net the equalizer in the 83rd minute past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Then, on his Chelsea debut, Mendy didn't get close to making a single save in a penalty shootout lacking the usual pressure coming from the stands with the stadium largely empty.

Going out of the League Cup was the latest setback for Lampard, whose side has only four points from its opening three Premier League games.

“You sleep for one minute and don’t recover and defend a zone where players score goals then you are going to concede," Lampard said. “Players have to get better at that.”

Tottenham, who haven't won a trophy since last picking up the League Cup in 2008, returns to action in its stadium on Thursday to play Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League qualifying playoffs and then plays at Manchester United on Sunday.

“The football authorities, with so many rules which are in place, should be forbidding a player to play two matches in 48 hours,” Mourinho said.
