Pakistan batsman Haider Ali says win over India in Asia Emerging Nations Cup has given him immense confidence ahead of ICC U-19 World Cup
Karachi: Pakistan's U-19 team batsman Haider Ali says the win over India in Asia Emerging nations Cup has given him immense confidence as he gears up for the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup scheduled later this month.
Haider said he and skipper Rohail Nazir performed well in the recent Asia Emerging Nations Cup, which Pakistan won in Bangladesh after beating India in the semifinals, and that has helped their confidence.

"Beating India and then having done well in first class matches we have gained a lot of confidence and we want to carry the burden of Pakistan's campaign in the junior World Cup," Ali said.
Ali said Pakistan won't be affected by the withdrawal of Test fast bowler Naseem Shah from the line-up.
Haider, who scored a brilliant 134 runs for Northern Punjab in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final against winners Central Punjab, said he and Rohail had matured enough and were keen to lead the team's push to win the World Cup in South Africa starting January 17.
"I and Rohail have matured a lot in the last few years specially after getting a chance to play first-class cricket and our experience in the Asia Emerging Nations Cup which Pakistan won," Haider said.
"And both of us believe we can spearhead and motivate the other players to perform well and try to win the World Cup," he added.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Rohail, who is also captain of the Pakistan junior team and got half centuries in both innings of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, also made it clear that not having Naseem in the squad would not make a big difference.
"If he had been selected it would have been a great boost for us but mentally we have been preparing to play without him in the junior World Cup and the back-up pace bowlers we have are also good," he said.

Babar Azam says innings in South Africa against Dale Steyn gave confidence to excel at Test match level
Karachi: Pakistan's top batsman and T20 skipper Babar Azam says he spent a good part of 2019 correcting the mistakes he made in Test cricket and now has a better understanding of the format's nuances.
Azam said he wasn't quite living up to his own expectations in Test cricket for the last two years.
"This year, I worked on improving the mistakes I made in the format and was able to overcome some of them which helped me make some runs. The more you play the longer format, the more you understand the nuances of the game and find your way," Azam said.
In six Tests, Babar scored 616 runs at 68.44 at a hugely impressive strike-rate of 72.30 last year with the help of three centuries and three half-centuries while in 20 ODIs, he totalled 1,092 runs at 60.66. His strike-rate was 93.30 and the runs tally included three centuries and six half-centuries.
In 10 T20Is, Babar contributed 374 runs at 41.55 with a strike-rate of 136.99. Babar scored a total of four half-centuries in T20Is in 2019.
Babar said scoring well and getting runs in South Africa gave him immense confidence.
"My innings in South Africa against Dale Steyn gave me great pleasure and confidence that I can get into the Test match zone. I also learned how to convert 60s and 70s into 100s, and then my century in Australia gave me confidence that I can make big runs in the format," he said in a year-end statement on Tuesday.
Babar said when a batsman gets runs in places like South Africa, Australia and New Zealand against formidable bowling attacks, he gets self-belief and confidence.
"I rate the century against Australia as my best innings of the year in Test format," he said.
Babar was Pakistan's most prolific batsman in all three formats in the year and finally came of age in Test cricket as well.
Babar is the only Pakistani cricketer in the ICC Player Rankings to feature in the top-six across the three formats -- No.6 in Tests, No.3 in ODIs and No.1 in T20Is.
"I used to score runs earlier but sometimes I wasn't able to give match-winning performances. I tried to improve on that aspect learned how to bat and win games under pressure, which was a big learning curve for me," he said.
He also talked about the ICC World Cup, his first as a player. Babar scored a Pakistan record of 474 runs in the tournament at 67.71.
"It was a big occasion and I really enjoyed the event . As a kid, I used to follow World Cups very keenly on television. When I got selected for the big event, I set a goal of doing something big and different," he said.
"Being the top batsman in my team was always a target for me. The World Cup gave me an opportunity of getting recognised at the highest level, which gave me real satisfaction.
"My innings against New Zealand (101 not out, 127b, 11x4) was my best in the tournament and it taught me a great deal of how to bat and bail the team out in a pressure situation.

'We are on right track, bright future ahead of us', says Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq
Karachi: Banking on the young talent, Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq hoped for better results in 2020 and indicated that a few seniors may not return to the national side.
Misbah hailed emergence of batsman Babar Azam and pace duo of Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi in 2019, which he termed as tough for Pakistan in Test cricket.
"Going further we have to improve a lot of things in both red-ball and white-ball cricket. This team has enough potential and new boys are also making their way in international cricket. There's certainly a bright future ahead for us," Misbah said.
The coach spoke highly of Babar Azam.
"The emergence of Babar Azam as a mega star across all formats is very good news for Pakistan cricket. He remained number one in T20I cricket and is in the top ten batsmen in the ODI cricket.
"He played some brilliant innings in the World Cup and ended the year by establishing himself as a Test batsman with scintillating performances in Australia and two centuries against Sri Lanka in Pakistan."
Misbah also noted Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi's impressive start in Test cricket.
"Naseem got a fifer in the last Test against Sri Lanka. Shaheen bowled well in the World Cup and he showed glimpses of being a Test bowler in South Africa, and bowled really well in Australia and here in Pakistan against Sri Lanka. We will hopefully bank on these two promising fast-bowlers in the future.
"Overall, we are on the right track. The more we play the longer format, the more we will improve. We need to do a lot of work in white-ball cricket ahead of the all-important ICC T20 World Cup in Australia."
Misbah did not take any names but his comments indicated that it is the end of the road for Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik in international cricket
"We can go a long way with a few more additions in the side and the present players maturing," he said.
Misbah since assuming the dual responsibility in September has himself come under fire for the team's poor performances specially after they suffered a three nil defeat to Sri Lanka in the T20 home series but did not call Hafeez or Malik to the team even though Pakistan also lost a T20 series in Australia.
Hafeez and Malik last played for Pakistan in the World Cup. Since then Malik has retired from ODIs and only focuses on T20 cricket while Hafeez is also available only for white-ball cricket. None of the two has been called up for Pakistan duty by Misbah.
Malik and Hafeez have in a combined total made 705 white ball international ODI and T20 appearances for Pakistan.
Misbah said Pakistan's performances in white ball cricket suffered since their main players like Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan, on the back of whom we had won the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, lost form at a crucial time which saw us suffer in the ODI World Cup and T20I format.

Australia vs New Zealand: Hosts hint at playing unchanged side in third Test at SCG, coach Justin Langer says 'hard to make changes'
Sydney: Australia coach Justin Langer says it will be hard to make a change for the third cricket Test against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground despite the home side having clinched the series.
Langer was impressed with Mitchell Swepson's work in the nets on Wednesday, suggesting the legspinner remains in the mix to make his debut on Friday, but wouldn't be drawn on Australia's likely starting side.
"It's going to be hard to make changes. That said, I think it's really important that we wait ... and see over the next two days what the wicket looks like," Langer said.
File image of Justin Langer. Reuters
Australia won the first Test by 296 runs in Perth and the second at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by 247, both in four days. Australia will be going for its fifth consecutive Test win after beating Pakistan 2-0 before playing New Zealand.
Expectations of a spin-friendly pitch in Sydney, as usual, prompted selectors to add Swepson to the Test squad as a possible backup to Nathan Lyon.
Should Swepson be overlooked it would mean plenty of overs for Marnus Labuschagne, who is Australia's form batsman.
"We're talking about finding another allrounder in Australian cricket, well it might give us an opportunity to bowl Marnus and Travis Head a few overs," Langer said. "Every time Marnus gets the ball in his hand, it's pretty exciting."
Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and teammate Henry Nicholls both missed a training session Wednesday due to flu-like systems,
Team officials said the two players were expected to play Friday.

Pakistan withdraw pacer Naseem Shah from U-19 World Cup squad; Mohammad Wasim Junior named replacement
Karachi: Pakistan on Wednesday withdrew fast bowler Naseem Shah from its Under-19 World Cup squad, saying the youngster is ready to show his mettle at the senior level.
Shah, who made his Test debut recently, has been replaced by Mohammad Wasim Junior from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pakistani bowler Naseem Shah. AP
Naseem was named in the Under-19 squad on the insistence of junior head coach, Ejaz Ahmed but after his impressive show in Australia and in the two Test series against Sri Lanka at home, head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis felt that he should be withdrawn from the junior squad.
"Naseem has recently broken that glass ceiling and has established his credentials as an international cricketer. As such, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a pragmatic approach and decided to withdraw him from next year's competition to provide this opportunity to another promising cricketer so that he can show his mettle and potential at a global stage," PCB CEO Wasim Khan said in a statement.
Wasim said the change should not affect Pakistan's chances at the U19 World Cup, to be held in South Africa from 17 January to 9 February.
"Naseem will now remain in Pakistan and continue to work on his skills under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Waqar Younis. Furthermore, he will remain available for the home series against Bangladesh," Wasim concluded.
Pakistan's Test series against Bangladesh in January remains in the doldrums as the BCB is insisting on only playing three T20 matches in Pakistan.
Wasim Junior took three wickets each in the ACC Asia Cup and on the tour of South Africa, while he bagged seven wickets on the tour of Sri Lanka.
On the domestic circuit, he played one U-19 one-day match in which he bagged three wickets, while he snapped up seven wickets in three U-19 three-day matches.
The 2004 and 2006 champions and three-time runners-up Pakistan are placed in Group C of the 16-team event and will play Scotland in their opening match 19 January in Potchefstroom.

Ranji Trophy 2019-20: Karnataka's Mayank Agarwal to be rested for match against Mumbai ahead of India A tour of New Zealand
New Delhi: India's Test opener Mayank Agarwal will be rested for the high-profile away Ranji Trophy game against Mumbai, starting 3 January as a part of workload management programme by the BCCI ahead of A team's tour of New Zealand.
Agarwal will be a part of the India A squad's shadow tour, where they would play two warm-up List A games, three unofficial ODIs and two four-day 'Tests' before joining the senior team for the Test matches. The tour starts on 17 January.
With the Karnataka opener set to leave with A squad led by Shubman Gill on 10 January, it is understood that BCCI had asked the state team to exempt Agarwal from the upcoming Ranji game.
However Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw will be turning up for Mumbai even though they are also part of the A team.
While Prithvi like Agarwal will play both formats, Rahane along with Cheteshwar Pujara will be warming-up for the Test series by playing the second four-day game.
As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, Ravikumar Samarth has been recalled by Karnataka for the upcoming encounter.

South Africa vs England: Dale Steyn slams Indian fan for mocking Proteas' victory in first Test
New Delhi: South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has hit back hard at an Indian fan who mocked the Proteas' recent 107-run win over England in the first Test of the four-match series.
The 36-year-old pacer, a veteran of 93 Tests and 125 ODIs, took to Twitter to congratulate South Africa captain Faf du Plessis and newly-appointed coach Mark Boucher after the Proteas took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Well done to the Proteas!
Mark and Faf seem to have put together a team that looks hungry, has fight, but above all look menacing with real intent towards their skill.
All characteristics that I grew up with when I played under Smith and co.
Gr8 to see the boys back! #proteas— Dale Steyn (@DaleSteyn62) December 30, 2019
But an Indian fan tried to mock the win, replying on Steyn's post that it was just a win on home turf to which, the pacer replied: "I guess India in India also doesn''t count then either... And just by the way, God has nothing to do with this. Idiot."

Indian sports in 2019: Shooters impress, Amit Panghal packs a punch, PV Sindhu creates history and other highlights
The revered cricketers did most things right save for the World Cup heartbreak but 2019 became a 'Year to Remember' in Indian sports for trailblazing performances in Olympic disciplines, raising hopes that Tokyo 2020 might just make up for the disaster that was Rio 2016.
Amit Panghal became the first Indian male boxer to win silver medal at the World Championships. @BFI_official
The shooters, who drew a blank in 2016 Olympics, were, to put it mildly, on fire this year. They strode away with 21 gold, six silver, and three bronze medals to take India to the top in the Rifle-Pistol World Cups and Finals. En route, they also sealed 15 Olympic quota places, the most that the country has ever achieved.
The stars of this performance were the young bunch of Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Choudhary, Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan, who showed no fear even when faced with the best in the world.
The wrestlers and boxers too delivered unprecedented hauls at the World Championships and in the case of the former, there was the additional joy of securing four Olympic quotas to go with one silver and four bronze medals.
More than a decade older than Panghal but still among the most ambitious athletes around, Mary Kom brought home a record-shattering eighth world championship medal, which made her the most successful boxer in the history of the marquee event.
Then there was Pankaj Advani, redefining consistency with his 23rd world title in billiards.
The cricketers hogged the spotlight thanks to a stellar run spearheaded by the redoubtable Virat Kohli and his hungry-for-wickets pace attack. The highlight for the Men in Blue was their first-ever Test series victory on the Australian soil, while the World Cup semifinal exit would definitely count for the biggest disappointment for a team that was perhaps the strongest pre-tournament favourite.
That run out of Mahendra Singh Dhoni which Martin Guptill effected with a superhuman effort didn't just end India's World Cup in tears but also left a question hanging on what's next for the man who was dismissed.
For a change, there were some positive developments off the field with former captain Sourav Ganguly taking over the administrative reins. He made a ground-breaking decision just a week into his stint by getting the team to embrace the Day/Night version of Test cricket.
On the badminton court, which has been India's happy hunting ground for a few years, P V Sindhu became the country's first world champion in the sport. She, however, could not win anything else apart from that while Saina Nehwal was mostly laid low by injuries.
The world championship in Switzerland became a big one for India in more than one way when B Sai Praneeth emulated the iconic Prakash Padukone by bringing home a men's singles bronze, ending a 36-year wait.
The hockey teams also enjoyed a reasonably successful year even though neither the men nor the women faced any major challengers. To their credit, both teams qualified for the Olympics by grabbing the chances they got.
The tennis circuit didn't have much to offer in terms of performance, barring the one memorable set that Sumit Nagal took off the great Roger Federer in the US Open first round.
As has been the case for most years, more headline-grabbing developments took place outside the court when the administrators and the players battled over a Davis Cup trip to Pakistan despite seemingly being on the same side. The tie was eventually played at a neutral venue but not before it cost Mahesh Bhupathi his job as India's captain for refusing to travel to Islamabad owing to security concerns, which were acknowledged by the International Tennis Federation.
Bhupathi's former partner and old warhorse Leander Paes logged his 44th doubles Davis Cup win during the tie and weeks later announced that 2020 would be his last year in the professional circuit, setting the stage for a long-drawn and emotional farewell to the sport he has dominated with his sheer perseverance.
Injuries to top stars such as javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and sprinter Hima Das ensured that track-and-field didn't have much to show this year. But what made it bad for the sport was doping and age-fraud controversies.
On a more positive note, the country booked Olympic berths in mixed 4x400m relay and men's 3000m steeplechase event (Avinash Sable).
Football was disappointing save for the heroics of Sunil Chhetri, who remained ahead of Lionel Messi in the international goals count. But the team bowed out early from the World Cup as well as the Asian Cup qualifiers and ended the year with an 11-rung fall in its FIFA standings.
The archers were on target but their bungling administrators ensured they had no national flag to compete under even though a couple of Olympic quotas were secured.
The paddlers didn't have a full-time coach for most of the year but that didn't stop G Sathiyan becoming the first Indian to break into the top-25 of the ITTF world rankings, rising to 24th in July.
It was also a year in which India's para-athletes secured 22 quotas for the 2020 Paralympics, bettering Rio 2016, which featured the largest-ever contingent of 19.
Towards the end, Koneru Humpy rose back to prominence with the world rapid title, adding chess to the reasons Indian sports would look back at 2019 with fondness and pride.

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah says 2019 has been a year of 'accomplishments, learning and memories'
New Delhi: India speedster Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday described 2019 as a year of "accomplishments, learning and memories" on and off the field and said he was eagerly looking forward to another successful year in 2020.
"2019 has been a year of accomplishments, learning, hard work and making memories, on the field and off it too. And on the last day of the year, I'm looking forward to everything that 2020 has to offer," Bumrah tweeted along with a few pictures of his achievements in the year gone by.
2019 has been a year of accomplishments, learning, hard work and making memories, on the field and off it too. And on the last day of the year, I’m looking forward to everything that 2020 has to offer! 💪🏼 pic.twitter.com/YishbcuYWO
— Jasprit Bumrah (@Jaspritbumrah93) December 31, 2019
In 2019, Bumrah not only emerged as India's pace spearhead in all three formats of the game, but also became one of the best bowlers in the world.
Bumrah, 26, finished 2019 as the numero uno bowler in one-day cricket while occupying the sixth spot in the ICC Test bowlers rankings.
In the year gone by, he also achieved a rare feat, becoming only the third Indian to scalp a hat-trick in Tests after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan.
Bumrah picked up 62, 103 and 51 wickets respectively from 12 Tests, 58 ODIs and 42 T20Is that he played for India so far.
But the right-arm pacer has been out of action since August after India's tour of the West Indies because of a stress fracture on his back.
Bumrah, however, has recovered from the injury and is set to make his return in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting in Guwahati on 5 January.
He has also been picked in the squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia which will begin on 14 January in Mumbai after the Sri Lanka rubber.

India U-19 suffer defeat against South Africa by five wickets in inconsequential third youth ODI
East London: Skipper Priyam Garg's fifty went in vain as India Under-19 team suffered a five-wicket loss to South Africa in an inconsequential third Youth ODI at the Buffalo Park.
Before this match, India Under-19 had already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after winning the first two matches of the series.
Sent into bat on Monday, India lost three wickets before crossing the fifty-run mark with Achille Cloete striking twice for the hosts.
Garg and N Tilak Varma (25) then steadied the ship as the two added 58 runs together.
The partnership was broken when Garg, who scored 52, got out soon after India reached hundred. N Tilak Varma got out soon after as South Africa restricted India Under-19 to 192 for 8 on the board.
For South Africa Under-19, Pheku Moletsane (2/36) picked up two wickets and was involved in two run-outs.
South Africa Under-19 then returned to overhaul the target with 10 balls to spare, riding on Jonathan Bird's 121-ball 88.
Chasing 193 runs to win, South Africa Under-19 lost Bryce Parsons (15) in the ninth over after a first-wicket partnership of 35 runs.
Opener Andrew Louw (31) and Bird then shared a 49-run stand for the second wicket before the former and Levert Manje (0) departed in space of a run.
Luke Beaufort (14) then gave company to Bird as they shared a 48-run partnership to take South Africa Under-19 to 130.
Jack Lees (29) and Bird then added 67 runs before Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed the former in the 48th over.
Bird then took South Africa home.
Brief scores:
South Africa Under-19 193/5 (Jonathan Bird 88 not out, Andrew Louw 31; Yashasvi Jaiswal 2/40) beat India Under-19 192/8 (Priyam Garg 52, N Tilak Varma 25; Pheku Moletsane 2/36) by five wickets.

Sanjay Manjrekar terms 2019 as his 'worst year', regrets on-air spat with Harsha Bhogle
Sanjay Manjrekar admitted that 2019 has been the "worst year" for him as an analyst and commentator, referring to his controversial "bits and pieces" remark aimed at Ravindra Jadeja and later, his on-air spat with Harsha Bhogle.
'It's been the worst year for me as analyst and commentator'
A candid @sanjaymanjrekar explains why it was a terrible 2019 for him 😉 pic.twitter.com/CAt3RRzX16
— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) December 30, 2019
Opening up on his controversy with Jadeja for the first time, Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo that a lot of people have used the same words for Jadeja and his knock against the Kiwis in the World Cup was indeed special.
"The thing is I gave an interview to a random news channel and that line got picked up. The player was upset. Bits and pieces was something lot of people used. When I say it was a terrible year for me, I gave that comment and very next day Jadeja, in that semi-final, played an absolute blinder of an innings. The kind of innings we have never seen from him," Manjrekar said.
Taking on Manjrekar for his comment, Jadeja blasted the former cricketer on Twitter and said he deserves respect because he has played twice the number of matches than Manjrekar. Later, the all-rounder played a heroic knock of 77 in the World Cup semi-final match against New Zealand, which India lost by 18 runs.
After the Jadeja controversy was done and dusted, Manjrekar once again courted controversy when he had a spat with fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle during India's pink ball day-night Test against Bangladesh. While talking about the game, Bhogle spoke about the visibility of the pink ball and said that it needed to be discussed with the players. In reply, Manjrekar pointed towards his experience as a former cricketer and downplayed Bhogle's comments.
“You need to ask the players about visibility perhaps but for us, those who have played the game, we have a fair idea of what’s happening out there,” Manjrekar had said.
Regretting the incident, Manjrekar told to ESPNCricinfo that he was unprofessional at that moment and apologised for it.
“I want to get very serious about this. See, one thing I pride myself on is being professional and with that particular comment it was me losing control and I was unprofessional, I was wrong and something that I regret… it was wrong of me. That is what really bothers me that I let my emotions get the better of me. Mostly being unprofessional and to an extent indecent as well,” he said.

Cricket West Indies appoints Trevor Penney as assistant coach for limited-overs formats
St John's: Former India fielding coach Trevor Penney has been appointed as the assistant coach of West Indies cricket team for limited-overs formats.
Warwickshire stalwart Penney has been handed a two-year contract by Cricket West Indies.
Cricket West Indies stated in a statement that the 51-year-old Penney's area of expertise is fielding and he will work with the West Indies team in white-ball formats (One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals).
He will join the West Indies team on 2 January as they start preparations for the upcoming international home series against Ireland. The tour will feature three ODIs and as many T20s from 7 to 19 January.
"I'm thrilled and excited to be given this opportunity to work with this brilliant bunch of cricketers and staff led by Kieron Pollard and Phil Simmons," Penney said.
"I've been lucky enough over the last few years to work with several members of the squad and the Caribbean is like 'home away from home' for me being involved in the CPL.
"We have two big T20 World Cups coming up (in Australia 2020 and India 2021) and it's my aim to try and improve everybody and be as good as we can and hopefully win those two major ICC events for the great people of the West Indies."
Penney, who played 158 first-class and 291 List A matches for Warwickshire, has vast coaching experience, having worked with several international teams, including India, Sri Lanka, Netherlands and USA.
He has also served as assistant coach at King's XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League as well as assistant coach with the St Lucia Zouks and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Most recently he was part of the Barbados Trident coaching staff during their successful campaign in the 2019 CPL.
Commenting on Penney's appointment, West Indies head coach, Phil Simmons said: "Trevor (Penney) is an excellent coach and has demonstrated this everywhere he has worked.
"He has huge experience with Sri Lanka and India at the highest international level, and in most T20 leagues around the world including the CPL. He brings enormous energy and is very well respected by all the players."

David Beckham's new MLS team Inter Miami hires Uruguayan Diego Alonso as first head coach
Miami: David Beckham’s new MLS team finally has its first coach, with Inter Miami hiring Diego Alonso.
The Uruguayan, who has coached two different teams to CONCACAF Champions League titles, officially took over Monday as the inaugural manager of Beckham’s club. He was an attacker as a player and prefers the same scoring-minded style as a coach.
“We knew we would find a coach that matches our aspirations of trying to be successful right out of the gate,” Inter Miami Sporting Director Paul McDonough said. “What we really like about him is he’s coached at big clubs and he’s won at big tournaments. He’s won at all different levels throughout South America.”
Alonso said after he went through his first interview with Inter Miami officials, he knew the job was right for him.
“It's an ambitious and a winning project," Alonso told the AP. “That's what I'm all about."
Alonso won’t have long to get settled. Inter Miami — with Beckham a leading part of the ownership and front office — will gather for their first practices in January, has preseason matches in February and make their MLS debut on March 1 at Los Angeles FC. The home opener at the team’s newly constructed home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is on 14 March against the LA Galaxy.
“I'm very excited," Alonso said. “I know this league very well. I know the challenge."
Alonso was most recently coach of the Mexican club Monterrey, who had success against MLS sides during their run to the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League title. They beat Atlanta United by a 3-1 two-game aggregate in the quarterfinals, then rolled past Sporting Kansas City by a 10-2 aggregate in the semifinals.
He's the only coach to win that CONCACAF tournament with two different clubs.
“The MLS has made such a focus on trying to go and make one of the targets winning CONCACAF Champions League,” McDonough said. “I think the fact that Diego has done it twice with two different teams was super-valuable to me. He’s young. He’s got a clear idea of how he wants to play. And I think his desire to coach Miami as the next step in his coaching career was super-valuable to us.”
The 44-year-old Alonso spent part of the last two years with Monterrey before being fired in September despite a 31-12-12 record in 55 matches with that club; the team made the move amid a slump that threatened the team's playoff chances in the top Mexican league. Before that, he was with the Mexican club Pachura — also taking it to a CONCACAF Champions League crown, and again having success against MLS clubs.
He also coached in his native Uruguay as well as Paraguay. Alonso played for Uruguay’s national team, and the striker also was with clubs in Argentina, Spain, Mexico and China before starting his coaching career in 2011.
“The makeup of our team right now has a lot of South American players to go with the Americans,” McDonough said. “I think it’s really, really important that he can relate to those players and they can understand his training philosophies.”
Alonso’s hiring comes as Inter Miami is still completing their first roster, with plenty of additional moves expected over the next few weeks.
“The idea of winning right away is the thing that I liked the most, the thing that convinced me the most," Alonso said. “I don't see it as a challenge. I see it as an opportunity."
The team has made two splashy player acquisitions in recent days. They signed two-time MLS Cup winning defender Roman Torres — Panama’s captain who played in every minute of his nation’s matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. And they struck a deal with US men’s national team veteran forward Juan Agudelo, who has appeared for three other MLS clubs and made 28 appearances for the USMNT.
Among the other big names on Inter Miami’s roster so far: former MLS goalkeeper of the year Luis Robles, three-time MLS Cup winning defender AJ DeLaGarza and midfielder Lee Nyguen — who was third in the MLS MVP voting in 2014.
Alonso has been to Miami as a visitor, and said he's eager to learn about South Florida now as a resident.
“I know the city as a tourist," Alonso said. “But logically, you get in love with it once you live there."

Scottish Premiership: Rangers claim striker Alfredo Morelos was racially abused by fans during match against Celtic
Glasgow: Scottish club Rangers said on Monday that their forward Alfredo Morelos was subjected to racist abuse by Celtic fans during this weekend's Old Firm derby.
A spokesman for Rangers told Britain's Press Association that the 23-year-old Colombia international was targeted by rival fans after he was sent off by referee Kevin Clancy in the closing stages of Sunday's 2-1 win over Celtic after picking up the second of two yellow cards.
"We believe Alfredo was racially abused and we would expect now that all measures will be taken to identify and deal with those responsible," the spokesman was quoted as saying.
Celtic responded with a statement saying they have "received no reports of any racial abuse but would fully investigate any should these be brought to our attention."
Morelos had gestured toward fans with his hand across his throat as he made his way up the tunnel.
Rangers said that gesture is "used commonly throughout South America to indicate quite simply that something – in this case, the match – is finished."

Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah make it to Wisden's T20I team of the decade; MS Dhoni misses out
London: India skipper Virat Kohli and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah were the only two Indians who found a place in Wisden's T20 International team of the decade, which didn't feature Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Australia's limited overs captain Aaron Finch was named captain of the team, which has two more Australian in Shane Watson and Glenn Maxwell, two England cricketers — Jos Buttler and David Willey, two Afghanistan all-rounders — Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, and New Zealand's Colin Munro and Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga.
On Kohli, Wisden said: "While Kohli's record in domestic T20 cricket is patchy, the same cannot be said of T20Is. Kohli's average of 53 was the best in the decade, and while his consistency compromises his strike-rate slightly, he is still able to score at a good rate, even if not exceptional.
"Strong against pace and spin, and rapid between the wickets, Kohli is an ideal player at No.3, able to fight fires when an early wicket is lost and stabilise the innings, but also accelerate when a platform is set. Following a huge first-wicket partnership, Kohli will slide down the order in this XI," it said on its website.
Kohli, who ranks third in the list of leading run-scorers of all time with 21,444 runs, was also included in Wisden's Test and ODI teams of the decade, besides being named in Wisden's list of five cricketers of the decade which also features Steve Smith, Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers and Ellyse Perry.
Kohli, who is currently ranked No.1 in both ICC Test and ODI rankings for batsmen, was also picked as the captain of Australian great Ricky Ponting's all-star Test team of the decade.
While Kohli was picked in Wisden's T20I team of the decade to strengthen the batting order, Bumrah found a place in the bowling unit due to his superb economy rate and reputation for being a reliable death bowler.
"Bumrah's overall economy rate of 6.71 is the second best in the world among quick bowlers, behind Dale Steyn," Wisden said about Bumrah, who has overall taken 216 wickets, including 51 in T20Is, in his international career so far.
"This statistic is more impressive when you consider he did the majority of his bowling in the death overs, where his economy rate of 7.27 was the seventh best in the world, and comfortably the best by a quick bowler. Bumrah is likely bowl three overs at the death for this side."
Dhoni, who led India to the 2007 World T20 title, was a notable omission from the all-star team.
Wisden's T20I team of the decade: Aaron Finch (c), Colin Munro, Virat Kohli, Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, Jos Buttler, Mohammad Nabi, David Willey, Rashid Khan, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga.

Sports minister Kiren Rijiju speaks on Mary Kom-Nikhat Zareen controversy, says 'India is proud of both of them'
Sports minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said not much should be made of the "ugly spat" that marred the trial bout between MC Mary Kom and Nikhat Zareen and the country is proud of both the six-time world champion and her promising challenger.
Mary Kom defeated Zareen 9-1 in the trials held on Saturday to make the squad for Olympic Qualifiers in China in February. The bout was marred by acrimony as the two boxers didn't shake hands after the contest and Mary Kom ignored an attempted hug by Zareen.
"Mary Kom is a legend who has achieved what no other boxer has ever achieved in the World Amateur Boxing. Nikhat Zareen is an amazing boxer who has the potential to follow the footsteps of Mary Kom. India is proud of both of them. Period," Rijiju tweeted.
"...passions & emotions are the souls of Sports! The only point to bear in mind is, in professional sports, the players & money matter more whereas in amateur sports it's the nation. The ugly spate (sic) shouldn't have adverse effects on players while representing India," he added.
Zareen had approached Rijiju with an open letter when the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) flip-flopped on a stated policy and announced direct selection of Mary Kom for the Olympic qualifiers.
Rijiju had steered clear of the matter at that time citing the Olympic charter.
On Saturday, Mary Kom said she was upset about being dragged into the selection controversy as the call on selection was not hers to take.
The Manipuri icon defended her refusal to exchange post-bout pleasantries with Zareen, saying that the former junior world champion will get her respect only if she "herself shows respect to others".
The 23-year-old Zareen said she expected better from the senior boxer and felt hurt when her attempt at sharing a hug was rebuffed.

Ricky Ponting names Virat Kohli as captain of his Test team of the decade, picks four England players
Melbourne: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting on Monday picked India skipper Virat Kohli to lead his all-star Test team of the decade, which featured four English players.
Ponting's Test team of the 2010s doesn't feature any other Indian apart from Kohli, who is currently ranked No.1 in both ICC Test and ODI rankings for batsmen.
The Englishmen in his team include all-rounder Ben Stokes, batsman Alastair Cook, and the pace duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Among the Australians he has opted for Steve Smith and David Warner along with spinner Nathan Lyon.
"Everyone's picking teams of the decade so I thought I'd join in the fun," Ponting wrote on his twitter handle.
"This would be my Test team of the 2010's: David Warner, Alastair Cook, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli (c), Kumar Sangakkarra (wk), Ben Stokes, Dale Steyn, Nathan Lyon, Stuart Broad, James Anderson."
Kohli has already amassed 70 international hundreds and is only behind Ponting (71) and Sachin Tendulkar (100).
The 31-year-old from Delhi, who averages more than 50 in all formats, is also third in the list of leading run-scorers of all time with 21,444 runs, behind Ponting (27,483) and Tendulkar (34,357).

The India skipper, who has scored runs all around the world, ended 2019 as the leading run-getter. Kohli holds the number one position in both the ICC Test and ODI batting charts.
Kohli was also named captain of the Test XI of the decade by Cricket Australia's official news website.

Peter Siddle retires: A workhorse, fighter but above all a player who gave his everything for the team
Wearing a white beaded chocker necklace, zinc creamed smeared on his bottom lip and a 25 meter run-up, Peter Siddle had all the characteristics of a menacing pace bowler. The year was 2008. Siddle was making his debut for Australia against India in Mohali. His first ball was a sharp bouncer that thudded into Gautam Gambhir's helmet.
Eleven years later, the once firebrand, woodchopper, meat loving country boy has decided to retire from Test cricket as a smiling vegan with 221 Test wickets in 67 Tests. Siddle’s quite retirement was perhaps a perfect reflection of his vital but unglamorous role in the Australian bowling artillery.
In the past decade, Siddle was never a leader of the attack, but he would often be referred as the man that was bound the bowling unit. He started as a raw quick that could touch speeds of 150km/h and ended as a wily pacer that could choke a batsmen with his sublime line and length.
In those early days, Siddle broke through the ranks due to his pace. Like many cricketers, his career was in phases. The initial four years, he relied on his ability to hit the deck hard and lure the batsmen into false strokes. He was always the workhorse of the attack and a player that was prepared to put the team ahead of personal milestones. He never had to be told to be the nightwatchmen — he would volunteer to be one.
In his first 22 Tests, Siddle had 74 wickets at an average of 33. The figures were fine, but to take the next leap, Siddle needed to add another string to his bow. The appointment of Craig McDermott as the bowling coach in May 2011 allowed Siddle to work closely with the former Australian quick and by the end of 2012, Siddle had become the No.2 bowler in the world.
One of the key aspects McDermott drilled into Siddle was to ensure he bowled a fuller length. Siddle also adopted a slight change of grip on the ball, a technical tweak that enabled him to swing the ball, a trait that was missing from his bowling in the early stages of his career. May 2011 to September 2013 was arguably the peak of Siddle’s career. The raw bustling quick was now a craftsman and in 24 Tests, he picked up 93 wickets at 26.74 with a strike-rate of 55.3.
Coincidentally, it was his off-field diet plans during this successful phase that generated most of the attention. The Victorian became a vegan in 2012 and famously adopted a diet that involved him eating as many as 20 bananas a day.
JUST IN: Aussie champion Peter Siddle has just informed his teammates of his retirement from international cricket.
What a career pic.twitter.com/TToiVkjfZ0
— cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) December 28, 2019
Criticised by many including Dennis Lillee for his non-meat diet Siddle said at the time “It has got me into a more professional body than I was previously. I was carrying a bit too much. I didn’t have as much muscle and I wasn’t as strong. I’ve converted that and turned it all around to be a lot more of a fine-tuned athlete.”
Under the coaching regime of Darren Lehmann, Siddle was told he needed to add 'that' yard of pace to be in reckoning for Australia again. So for six months, he went away, fine-tuned his body and started touching speeds of 140km/h again. The raw pace mentality of Lehmann probably cost him a few Tests, but he never complained. Instead, he spent season after season in English county cricket sharpening his skills with the Dukes ball.
To ensure he mastered the English conditions he spoke in lengths with Alistair Cook and Stuart Broad. As Justin Langer said before the Ashes campaign earlier, “Sidds is such a professional, even at 35, he wants to get better with each outing”.
When Siddle was picked as part of the Ashes squad this year, he became the only Australian fast bowler to be part of four Ashes tours to England. Importantly, he played a vital role in regaining the Ashes. Neither was he the leading wicket-taker, nor did he lead the strike-rates, but as Paine said, “Sidds is just the type of guy you always want around the dressing room”.
Even Siddle preferred to keep the retirement simple: "I'm very happy but a bit sad".
Siddle will always be remembered as a fighter, someone who kept plugging away and probably didn’t get the accolades in the media like his fellow peers. But if you ask any of the four captains (Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Steve Smith or Tim Paine) he played under — who would run through a brick wall for the team? The unanimous choice would be Peter Siddle.
